Chicago families are caught between the teachers union and the school district - CNN

I really don't know what to think about this situation. I used to teach school, so I understand this from a perspective of a teacher.

However, I am still working, and my personal opinion is that if teachers do not want to go back to work, they should find other employment. If they don't feel it is safe. But they should not be allowed to continue to collect the same wages, benefits and stay home.

“Educator Keyonna Payton wanted increased testing because she's worried about her family, she said Wednesday.
"I'm afraid because I have a husband, I have a young child, I have a 90-year-old grandmother with underlying health conditions and issues," Payton said. "So I would just appreciate being able to work in an environment where at least the students are all PCRed tested weekly, and we have their results to go to in-person instruction."

They want every student tested weekly? With a PCR test?

Chicago Teachers Say They Want To Return To Classrooms, But They Need Better COVID-19 Safety Measures

“We don’t have what we need in the schools,” Dussault said. “We don’t have robust contract tracing. We don’t have robust testing. We don’t have coverage when people are not here, and we need those things.”

“Payton said she’d like to see every CPS student tested weekly before they return to the building, and wants the district to provide KN95 masks to students, not just teachers.

“Kids have a hard time keeping a mask on your face. If I had a dollar every time I told the kids ‘put your mask up,’ I would be not talking to you right now, I’d be on an island,” Payton said. “But at least if they had a more protective mask, it would help mitigate some of the spread. Because we’re told that those are one of the safest masks out here. So we definitely need them for students as well.”

'DeSantis definitely had DeCovid': Florida governor appears out-of-breath during speech, sparking COVID speculation — Daily Dot

“Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) appeared winded during a speech, fueling speculation that he secretly contracted COVID-19. Difficulty breathing is a common symptom of the virus.

DeSantis reemerged this week after being absent from the public eye for over two weeks. His office said it was just a vacation, but many had doubts.

The longer DeSantis spoke, the more audible his breathing became.”

It's the responsibility of the employer to provide a safe working environment for all employees. If the employer cannot do that, why should the employees be the ones to lose wages and benefits over it?

OSHA sets the requirements that schools and universities have to meet during the Covid-19 pandemic. If these standards are not met, then teachers should contact OSHA for an investigation. If the schools and universities are meeting OSHA's guidelines, then they have every right to require employees to report to work, unless they have an ADA exemption. Teachers who feel they need an ADA exemption can file for one and it must be reviewed by the school for approval.

It was reported in MSM that he was absent for awhile due to accompanying his wife for cancer treatments.

I saw that press conference. He was very unlike his usual self and seemed to have trouble catching his breath to even make it through an entire sentence. If you go back and watch his press conferences over the last few months the difference is striking.

I don't agree with a lot of his policy decisions, but I hope the man is alright. jmo

I had read that also.

Ron DeSantis out of breath in video prompts COVID speculation

“Steven M. Brown, a Twitter user from St. Louis who said he had been a lung doctor for 35 years, posted: "To my very experienced eyes and ears, there is a respiratory issue.

"His phrasing, limited breath support, and use of accessory muscles of respiration are telling. Doesn't confirm it's #COVID19, but something appears to be wrong."

He should have postponed that press conference, it’s apparent he is not well.

“DeSantis' spokesman Kyle Lamb rejected claims that the governor was on vacation, saying he was simply "doing work behind the scenes with a lighter public schedule, just like last year."

I’d worry more about him being sick around his wife who is undergoing cancer treatment. :(

Question for all my Webslueths Covid-19 smarties. My 21 year old daughter( 2 vaccines and boosted) who is home from college had a friend over on Monday who just informed her he has tested positive for Covid. I have two at home Covid tests that I’ve been saving for “ an emergency “. Because of the difficulties obtaining these tests I don’t want to jump the gun and waste. She doesn’t feel sick … I don’t know.. do I let her take the test.. should she wait? Thought and opinions appreciated. I told her to wait until I get Webslueths opinions. Lol

Wait. I used to do Contact Tracing, and often people who took a test right away were negative, but developed symptoms three days later.

However, you may want to contact your local health department, because anyone who is a contact to a positive case gets first priority for a free Covid test. Especially if they have symptoms.

I would probably wait until she has symptoms, which is hopefully not the case. However, she should probably act as if she could be infected, mask up with at least a surgical mask, but preferably an N95, or KN95, and avoid others. JMO.

The CDC recommends testing 5 days after a known exposure, OR as soon as symptoms occur:

Quarantine & Isolation

Her friend was in your house?
You might want to get tested too.
I would find a place to get a PCR test which might take a few days to get a time slot. I wouldn’t use a rapid because she could be negative this afternoon and test positive the next day or so. Happening frequently with some of our work crews lately.

Alexa Knierim, Brandon Frazier out of figure skating nationals (COVID-19) (nbcsports.com)

Pairs’ national champions Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier withdrew from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships due to Frazier testing positive for COVID-19 with severe symptoms, it was announced the night before senior competition begins.

They are still eligible for Olympic team selection through a petition process.

“Although my symptoms are pretty bad, nothing sucks more than not being able to compete,” Frazier said in an Instagram video posted Wednesday night.

Frazier tested negative before arriving in Nashville on Monday for the competition, then started developing severe symptoms late Tuesday evening and got a test as a precaution. He was not required by event rules to be tested again until four days after his arrival.

Frazier is vaccinated and boosted against the virus, Knierim said on social media...

So far, the Olympics are set to take place as scheduled in Bejing, China. As qualifying competitions continue around the globe, I suspect that there will be other athletes who will contract Covid and have to withdraw from their respective contests. JMO

Do the test instructions provide some guidance?

Are the teachers who would be conducting online classes not the same people who are otherwise teaching in the classroom? I'm confused by your reply that they shouldn't get paid if they conduct online classes. My understanding is that online classes is a ton of work for teachers. But that's our local experience. Is is different in Chicago?

I just watched that video: he sounds awful and looks terrible. He also sounds congested. If he had Covid it is a shame that he just won't come out and admit it.
