Are the teachers who would be conducting online classes not the same people who are otherwise teaching in the classroom? I'm confused by your reply that they shouldn't get paid if they conduct online classes. My understanding is that online classes is a ton of work for teachers. But that's our local experience. Is is different in Chicago?

Many of my friends have been trying to use teachers who are using online format. Many teachers blamed "technology" for not being able to teach online.

So, if those teachers won't teach children in a classroom, at least make them show up physically at work, where there will be consistent internet connections. And on-site IT.

Is that a reasonable solution?

I kept looking for that...... i only saw it once on social media...... and I looked in various Florida press... couldn't find that verified...haven't for a while though. I just thought it therefore was not true.

Do you have a link, since you saw it in msm???

There are quite a few links in MSM if you google it. Most of the articles are political though, either from the left or the right. So I am posting the link to a youtube video of the Governor's own press conference where he talks about accompanying his wife to her treatment. It is 10tampabay.com's youtube.

It's the responsibility of the employer to provide a safe working environment for all employees. If the employer cannot do that, why should the employees be the ones to lose wages and benefits over it?
What would make classrooms “safe”? At first it was vaccines. Now that’s not enough. Covid isn’t going anywhere. So should US school children be educated via Zoom forever?

Covid Live Updates: Advisers to Biden Transition Team Call for Entirely New Domestic Covid Strategy

They call for every person in the United States to have access to low-cost testing, saying the Biden administration’s purchase of 500 million rapid tests is not enough; for next-generation Covid vaccines that would target new variants or perhaps take new forms, like nasal sprays or skin patches; for a “universal coronavirus vaccine” that would combat all known coronaviruses, and for major upgrades to public health infrastructure.

The authors also said that vaccine mandates should be imposed more broadly, including for schoolchildren, and that N95 masks should be made free and readily available to all Americans, as should oral treatments for Covid. (Mr. Biden has ordered several vaccine mandates on workers, but they are tied up in court.) The authors called, as well, for a broad “electronic vaccine certification platform,” which Mr. Biden has resisted.

Many school districts nationwide are managing this problem quite well, with children in school and teachers actively teaching safely. The fact that Chicago can't get it together is not justification to rob teachers of wages and benefits. jmo

I’m not sure I understand what Chicago teachers are looking for. Schools here have been in person since August 2020. Mask mandates went away in April 2021. Cases have been manageable and significantly lower than what’s present at any given time in the community. This is true of all socioeconomic levels across one of the largest cities in America. What would Chicago schools “getting it together” look like, exactly? There’s no way to eliminate risk.

NC hospitals say 100% of COVID-19 patients on ventilators are unvaccinated

Durham, N.C. — Doctors from Duke, UNC-REX and WakeMed hospitals all echoed the same three messages on Thursday: get vaccinated, get boosted and avoid emergency rooms if you aren't seriously ill.

The joint news conference comes alongside another day of record new cases of the virus in North Carolina. On Thursday, a record 24,292 new cases were reported, with 30.1% of tests returning positive over the past 24 hours.

As cases soar, local emergency departments are strained, and the number of people hospitalized for COVID -19 rose to 3,293 on Thursday, an increase of almost 200 from the day before.

Getting vaccinated and boosted is the key to staying out of hospitals or becoming seriously ill from coronavirus, all three physicians urged. At WakeMed and UNC hospitals, 100% of COVID-19 patients on ventilators are unvaccinated, they said.

At all WakeMed hospitals, only 1 in 10 ICU patients are fully vaccinated, and at Duke, all the patients on ECMO, a form of life support used for only the sickest patients, are unvaccinated.

Atlanta COVID surge: Classes are online-only in these school districts

Atlanta Public Schools plans to reopen with new COVID testing strategy

“Atlanta Public Schools plans to resume face-to-face instruction Monday with a greater emphasis on COVID-19 testing for students.

Among the most significant changes is the launch of a “test-to-stay” policy. That allows students and employees to remain in school if they are exposed to COVID-19 but test negative and have no symptoms.

Individuals who test positive or have symptoms will be sent home. Those who do not agree to testing must quarantine at home for 10 days.”

Mask policies amid COVID: Where metro Atlanta school districts stand

Masks have been optional for several districts including Buford, Cherokee, Cobb, Fayette, Forsyth and Marietta.

“Masks have been optional in most schools since early November. That’s when the district changed its universal masking policy that had been based on community infection rates. Instead, it required masks to be worn only in schools-with high numbers of COVID-19 cases.”

The same statistic here…100% of patients on ventilators in our local hospital system (three hospitals) are not vaccinated. 84% of covid patients are unvaxxed and 89% of covid patients in ICU are unvaxxed. The statistics consistently show that unvaxxed patients are the vast majority of covid patients.

I tried to find stats for the other regional hospital, Providence with 168 beds, and there is radio silence.

Yes I did. No side effects whatsoever. None for the first two doses either.
Friends who did have side effects mostly described fatigue and /or slight headache, which passed the next day.

Everyone is different, but FWIW the Pfizer booster side effects were about the same as the first two shots…headache, aches, low fever, in bed most of the next day. A small price to pay for feeling a bit more protected and doing my small part for the good of society. JMO

That is great to hear, thanks. I have some anxiety over it.

The headache I had was so minor I didn't even take a tylenol. I was up and around and nothing that required taking to my bed. I did have an aft. nap day I felt tired.

I don't know why it bothers me but it helps to hear what others have to say. Thanks.

And it helps to express your anxiety too. I think the only reason I realized I had a slight headache was because I never get them.
