Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #112

Well, Gemmie....it's not like we could ever be bothered to learn. *sigh*

As further illustration of that:

"The administration has canceled a contract awarded to Moderna (MRNA.O) for the late-stage development of its bird flu vaccine for humans, as well as the right to purchase shots, the drugmaker announced on Wednesday."
This sucks as bird flu appears to be making the rounds. :( Glad I sold MRNA (Moderna) stock long ago! Look at a 1 yr chart. They are the blue line, HD (Home Depot) is the pink line (you need at least 1 other stock/fund in order to see percentages). Not good. :(

The Trump administration has canceled $766 million awarded to drugmaker Moderna Inc. to develop a vaccine against potential pandemic influenza viruses, including the H5N1 bird flu.

The company said it was notified Wednesday that the Health and Human Services Department had withdrawn funds awarded in July 2024 and in January to pay for development and purchase of its investigational vaccine...

How is this making America healthy again?

Washington — The White House will fix errors in a much-anticipated federal government report spearheaded by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which decried America's food supply, pesticides and prescription drugs.

Kennedy's wide-ranging “Make America Healthy Again” report, released last week, cited hundreds of studies, but a closer look by the news organization NOTUS found that some of those studies did not actually exist.

Asked about the report's problems, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the report will be updated...

New York – The nation's top public health agency posted new recommendations that say healthy children may get COVID-19 vaccinations, removing language that said kids should get the shots.

The change comes days after U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that COVID-19 vaccines will no longer be recommended for healthy children and pregnant women...

I wish they'd allow us to make our OWN decisions about getting vaxxed. It reminds me of way back in the day when we had to have a prescription for certain feminine products that they have since been changed to OTC. We know when we need something, and I don't feel we need a Dr's permission for it (or RFK's). Because if I went with my Dr's recommendation for the Covid vaccine... once a year is enough (and I'm over 65). NOT her business to make that decision for me!!!!!

Funny how if my kid submitted a paper to college with even one non existent source cited and incorrect summarizations of other sources (per some of the authors of those studies) along with some evidence of potential AI usage, that would be an automatic "F" grade. Along with possible referral to and punishment by the school's Academic Honesty and Conduct board.

I would think that nationwide medical policy would be held to the same standards. Especially since this policy then has a huge impact on decisions made by insurance companies, state health clinics, and doctor's offices.

One would think. smh

It's OK... we can buy it from China and pay tariffs

*sigh*

last week, leaders from the US Food and Drug Administration outlined a new framework for the approval process for Covid-19 vaccines that could limit shots to older Americans and people at higher risk of serious Covid-19 infection.

updated Covid-19 vaccines will probably be approved for everyone 65 and older and for people 6 months and older who have at least one underlying condition that puts them at “high risk for severe Covid-19 outcomes.”

The CDC lists dozens of conditions that may contribute to higher Covid-19 risk, including asthma, cancer, diabetes, obesity and a history of smoking. These underlying conditions will make between 100 million and 200 million people in the US eligible for a Covid-19 vaccine under the new framework, the FDA leaders estimate.

Can people who do not meet the new eligibility criteria still get a Covid-19 shot for themselves or their kids?

Maybe, but it may be more difficult – and expensive.

“Theoretically, one could find someone who would be willing to provide them the vaccine – and they may have to pay out of pocket to get it – but there’s a lot of things that have to align for that to happen,” said Dr. Michelle Fiscus, a pediatrician and chief medical officer of the Association of Immunization Managers.

Health care providers may be able to provide the Covid-19 vaccine “off-label” – but they’d need to have the vaccine in stock, which has become increasingly uncommon.

The vast majority of Covid-19 vaccinations happen at pharmacies. Pharmacists generally don’t have the tools to verify medical history and whether an individual has a condition that makes them high-risk, so many of them could take patients at their word. But the recent announcements from the federal government may have a chilling effect on what providers are willing to do, experts say.

May 31, 2025 / Moderna, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA) today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved mNEXSPIKE® (mRNA-1283), a new vaccine against COVID-19, for use in all adults 65 and older, as well as individuals aged 12-64 years with at least one or more underlying risk factor as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).[1]

"The FDA approval of our third product, mNEXSPIKE, adds an important new tool to help protect people at high risk of severe disease from COVID-19," said Stéphane Bancel, Chief Executive Officer of Moderna.

Moderna expects to have mNEXSPIKE available for eligible populations in the U.S. for the 2025-2026 respiratory virus season, alongside Spikevax and mRESVIA®, the Company's approved respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine.

So both the new Covid-19 vaccine made by Moderna and the old Covid-19 vaccine made by Moderna will be available in fall 2025. If I read the article correctly, if you haven't been vaccinated for Covid-19 before, then you aren't eligible for the new Moderna covid-19 vaccine. Presumably, then you would be eligible for the old Covid-19 vaccine made by Moderna?

While Covid was supposedly an accident... this act of terrorism was not. NOT cool. WT *BEEP* is WRONG with people?!?? Even if it didn't harm humans, the head blight would cause more than enough damage to our crops. And what do crops do? FEED PEOPLE. We can't afford to have something like this smuggled into the country when climate change and overpopulation (IMO) is doing a whole lot of damage to our planet on their own. :(

Yunqing Jian, 33, and Zunyong Liu, 34, citizens of the People’s Republic of China, were charged in a criminal complaint with conspiracy, smuggling goods into the United States, false statements, and visa fraud, announced United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr.

The FBI arrested Jian in connection with allegations related to Jian’s and Liu’s smuggling into America a fungus called Fusarium graminearum, which scientific literature classifies as a potential agroterrorism weapon. This noxious fungus causes “head blight,” a disease of wheat, barley, maize, and rice, and is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year. Fusarium graminearum’s toxins cause vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects in humans and livestock.

I assume that Ms. Jian and Mr. Liu weren't conducting any research on the fungus that was related to their research at the University of Michigan. I guess we'll learn more at the court hearings.

It's a weird thing to be experimenting with, and certainly has bioweapon potential. Unfortunately, there have already been outbreaks of this fungus in the US and Canada. https://www.detroitnews.com/story/n...s-intercepted-at-detroit-airport/84009387007/

I received a text from CVS regarding the covid vaccine. The message stated that I’m eligible for a vaccine. I'm going to call to see if it’s the new Mederma.

From the article posted above, it sounds like the new Moderna vaccine for Covid-19 won't be ready until the fall, but no actual date was given. JMO.

It can't be the new one in June when the new ones have been coming out in September. And with all that's going on lately, new September Covid vaccines might be pushed out further. But no way are they going to be pulled in IMO. Also MO that the vaccine will be last years updated vax which was for 2024/2025.

I got that text too. I'm pretty sure that the vaccine they are offering now is the same as the one from last fall. Too soon for an updated one.

That is correct. They've been updating it in the fall. If anything, with all that's been going on with the administration... I can see it pushed out, but not pulled in. So basically they are telling people eligible for 2X a year that it's been 6 mo since your last vaccine. But that's JMO.
