Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #112

With RFK, Jr. at the helm of HHS, I think this is the direction things are headed. Vaccines won't necessarily be completely unavailable but likely more difficult to access. Insurance companies might decide not to cover vaccinations, and there probably won't be federal funding for those who can't afford to go to a doctor's office for the shots. JMO

If insurance companies listen to their number crunchers, you'd hope they'd continue to cover vaccinations since the costs incurred by a chid getting any of the diseases they prevent are MUCH MUCH HIGHER than them just covering the cost of the vaccines themselves.

But too often I find insurance companies preferring to gamble on saving money in the immediate term vs the possibly bigger costs later to the detriment of our health.

Yes, and I am concerned doctors, even if pro-vaccine, are unlikely to even offer the shots if they won't be covered by insurance. That's not a winning situation for anyone (except RFKJr who is eligible for the vax as he is 71yo, fwiw).

I guess the powers that be have not in their lifetime seen individuals with polio.
A friend of mine, born in 1938, contracted polio when she was 10 years old. Although she recovered much more than was originally predicted, she spent the rest of her life using a crutch. She lived a remarkable life, but not all polio victims can. Her younger brother also got polio and was much more disabled. She died last month at 87 from other ailments.

I was born in 1946, and I still remember the fear of polio before the vaccines were released. Public swimming pools were particularly feared. It was such a relief to be vaccinated, first with an injection and later with a sugar cube. RFK Jr is too young to remember the fear and relief, as are his “experts.”

Yeah, it's probably too much to ask for people working in the federal government to remember we had a president who served in the federal government paralyzed from polio. "Do you own research" apparently doesn't include knowing history of diseases in our nation and how they were prevented....and how they can come back.

Just for kicks, here's the map of the USA with the states that require polio vaccines in green. Stay tuned, though, because Florida might make this map out of date soon.

Over 1,000 current and former employees of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services signed a letter demanding the resignation of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., claiming he is "endangering the nation's health."

"We believe health policy should be based on strong, evidence-based principles rather than partisan politics. But under Secretary Kennedy’s leadership, HHS policies are placing the health of all Americans at risk, regardless of their politics," the letter stated.

The workers listed nine different actions they claim Kennedy did to "endanger the nation's health," including facilitating the firing of former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Susan Monarez, "refusing to be briefed by well-regarded CDC experts on vaccine-preventable diseases" and "disregarding the President’s Executive Order, 'Restoring Gold Standard Science in America,' which has called for transparent science, subject to unbiased peer-review, collaborative and interdisciplinary, and free from conflict of interest."

Last month, federal workers asked Kennedy in a separate letter to stop "spreading inaccurate health information, affirm CDC’s scientific integrity, and guarantee the safety of the HHS workforce" following a targeted shooting at the CDC's headquarters in Atlanta.
....
HHS employees said if Kennedy doesn't resign, then President Donald Trump and Congress should appoint a new leader of the department. The group has also implored other organizations to call for Kennedy's resignation.

Meanwhile, a coalition of over 60 health organizations — representing patients, consumers, workers, health care providers, and more — signed a letter addressed to President Trump urging him to fire Kennedy.

I agree. He's "old" and not young with the "in crowd". IMO, they really need to look back and rely on history. It'll tell you SO much.

ALL MY OPINION.

Maybe anyone who wants to make the polio vaccine NOT mandatory should have to spend a minimum of 24 hours in an old fashioned iron lung.

Agreed, those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

I’m an middle aged Aussie and remember all too well the dangers of polio.

Rotary has done so much around the world to eradicate polio.
And look what happens in the U.S. regarding valid vaccines.
Ridiculous.

I remember when our family left after mass and happily stood in a long line to receive that sugar cube. Our community knew some of the families affected by polio.

It’s just unbelievable. Never did I think I’d see such craziness in my lifetime.

How did this happen? Maybe it was the deregulation of the public airwaves back in the early 90s. TV and radio stations no longer were required to provide factual content or equal time to other points of view.

It launched what grew to be a pervasive, large scale propaganda campaign that dishonestly called itself entertainment.

European countries have had much better results from continuing to regulate their airwaves.

My grandparents and great grandparents only had 6th or 8th grade educations understood vaccines and public health. They grew up seeing friends and whole families perish from diseases.

I just asked our daughter and SIL to do me a “Mom favor” and wear masks on the plane when they fly to CA the end of this week to visit friends and then drive to OR to visit us next week. I’d hate to have our annual visit ruined.

There is a covid spike going on right now so this is definitely a very good idea! Hopefully in the airports as well as on the plane.

I also just read that northern Nevada is seeing more Pertussis cases this year than usual. Maybe other places too.

Lots of things out there that you don't want to catch.

Hey folks,

Thread is about Covid, not vaccines in general, not about polio, politics and RFK

Posts need to be directly related to Covid, otherwise they are off topic.

Unless members can keep this discussion confined to discussion of COVID, this thread is really at risk of being closed.
