Why do you assume the US wouldn't build temp hospitals? I believe at crisis level we will rise to the occasion.
We’d better start today-

The American Hospital Association, which represents thousands of hospitals and health systems, hosted a webinar in February with its member hospitals and health systems. Business Insider obtained a copy of the slides presented.

The presentation, titled "What healthcare leaders need to know: Preparing for the COVID-19" happened February 26, with representatives from the National Ebola Training and Education Center.

As part of the presentation to hospitals, Dr. James Lawler, a professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center gave his "best guess" estimates of how much the virus might spread in the US.

  • 4.8 million hospitalizations associated with the novel coronavirus
  • 96 million cases overall in the US
  • 480,000 deaths
  • Overall, the slide points out that hospitals should prepare for an impact to the system that's 10 times a severe flu season.

Ireland’s caretaker taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, is due to meet Donald Trump in the Oval Office this morning, the first meeting with an EU leader since the president’s travel ban announcement.

Varadkar was in the US ahead of the ban, which does not include flights from Ireland as it is not one of the Schengen zone countries Trump has targeted.

Varadkar’s two-day visit is the shortest undertaken for an Irish premier in recent memory and he was forced to cancel some engagements yesterday to deal with the Coronavirus crisis at home.

The US has also curtailed the traditional Irish American festivities with this afternoon’s shamrock ceremony in the White House usually headed by the US president and taoiseach of the day cancelled.

It is understood that Varadkar’s breakfast meeting with the vice-president, Mike Pence, this morning is also going ahead.

Seattle Flu Study allegedly tested samples for COVID-19 against federal, state guidelines

“SEATTLE — For months, Seattleites had been volunteering swabs of their nasal cavity as part of a one-of-a-kind study to track the spread of flu throughout the city.”

[...]

“The New York Times has reported that Chu and her staff began running tests of the flu samples before the lab was certified to do so and during a time when the testing procedures were not certified as well.

But in doing so, it detected participants that had presumptive tests for Covid-19 including a teenager at a Renton area high school. The school closed for a time as a precaution.

The Times reported that representatives of the CDC and the FDA discussed the testing of the flu samples and told researchers to stop testing, but the Flu Study’s institutional review board determined it would be ‘unethical’ for researchers not to test.”

You know, you are right. The USA is arrogant. Because this is the best country in the entire world! No body swims rivers to leave America. They swim to come here. They brave 90 miles of open sea and shark infested waters to sail here. They beg for visas. If you don’t like our arrogance, move. Some other country would be thrilled to take you. But while you are here, be polite. No one likes a whiney baby.

Historically, societies of power and wealth rise and fall. I find when they think they are above reproach and and envy of all is when they do not realize they are hastening their downfall, historically speaking. It is okay to criticize our lackluster response and still be good citizens. In fact, I think a healthy and progressing society demands that its own citizens evaluate objectively and criticize government actions where due versus blind fealty in support of nationalism IMO. MOO.

2 More Coronavirus Cases Announced in Broward; Miami-Dade Mayor Declares State of Emergency
Florida now has 26 residents who tested positive for COVID-19
Published March 11, 2020 • Updated 10 mins ago

“The Florida Department of Health announced three new positive cases of coronavirus overnight, including ones in Broward County.

Department of Health officials said the two cases in South Florida include a 65-year-old man in isolation and a 61-year-old man whose case is associated with Port Everglades. A 57-year-old man in Lee County was also confirmed to have the virus.

[...]

BBM:

“This case, a 56-year-old man who traveled recently, is the first announced in Miami-Dade.

Earlier Wednesday, a 70-year-old man in Broward County -- its sixth case overall -- was also tested positive for the virus. Health officials said he traveled to Tampa for an EMS conference last week. A 63-year-old resident of New York, who is currently in St. John's County, was also tested positive. He traveled from New York to Daytona Bike Week. All three are isolated.”

——

“Gimenez said the emergency declaration goes into effect on Thursday, and he will also be announcing decisions on public events such as the Miami Open, an international tennis tournament held at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.”

Criteria broadened
In Ireland, the criteria for testing patients has been broadened this week to include those patients who have clinical respiratory symptoms but no history of travel to affected areas internationally. This is in recognition that the disease may be circulating in the community.

More than 2,300 people have been tested for the disease in Ireland so far, with the vast majority receiving negative results. Tests are being carried out at a rate of 330 a day, according to Dr Cillian de Gascun, head of the National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL). The average turnaround time for processing tests is 10 hours, he said.

This is why he shut down the NBA....sounds like he broke quarantine....

Many people who have been in contact w/ someone who tested positive have been told to isolate themselves for 14 days. Gobert played in 7 games in the last 14 days against Toronto (3/9), Detroit (3/7), Boston (3/6), Knicks (3/4), Cleveland (3/2), Washington (2/28) & Boston (2/26).

Geez and we thought China was crazy when they chained doors or put piles of rocks in front of them to deter infected people from going out in public.

Maybe that’s what we will eventually need to do here in the USA.

Man...

As mentioned in early threads, I saw one video where they literally welded the doors shut. I saw another one where people were sealing a front door with duct tape...

I was just looking at Miami yesterday thinking how they didn’t have any yet...

Officials report first COVID-19 case in Miami-Dade County, 5th case in Broward County
If you're not testing, you're not finding them.
Fl. has 22 million people.
Orlando Intnl. Airport, the largest in the state has 4.5 million people coming thru monthly
from all over the world.
Disney World has 50,00 per DAY visiting from all over the world.
Spring breakers are still coming in hoards.
Our state and city leaders are still saying
Business As Usual.
Disney complaining they lost 200 million this
quarter in Asia. No one has the cahjones to
close them down.
Fl. leaders are shameful in doing their part.

Mayor Says That Healthy People Should Still Be Dining Out
“If you’re not sick, you should be going about your life,” Bill de Blasio said Wednesday

“People should still be going out to eat at restaurants, Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a press conference about the new coronavirus on Wednesday — emphasizing that the virus “does not transmit through food and drink.””

[...]

“In response to a question about how the city would help curb the economic impact, the mayor mentioned new no-interest loans for small businesses that experience a 25 percent decline or more due to new coronavirus. He also said that they’re “telling people to not avoid restaurants, not avoid normal things that people do.””
