I don't understand how debit cards can work without electricity? But I'll take your word for it. In my rural area I don't think that would be possible though.

You're correct about using it in a transaction, but ATM machines have backup when power goes out. Plus, I suppose I've never been in a situation where everywhere around me lost power. Usually driving some distance will alleviate that problem. Good to have cash on hand, though, I agree.

The masks are the type health care workers wear a blue color. Recently I went though my husbands medical supplies
from his stem cell transplant days. I found some unused face masks bring my total to 13. The 9 I found buried in the medical supplies plus the 3 extra the nurse give.

Coronavirus patients may be contagious for weeks longer than first thought, study says

Researchers looking at cases in China say patients could spread the virus for up to 37 days after they start showing symptoms, according to the study published in the British medical journal The Lancet.

On average, survivors still had the virus in their respiratory system for about 20 days and could presumably continue to spread the disease, researchers found.

“The shortest observed duration of viral shedding among survivors was 8 days, whereas the longest was 37 days,” the researchers said.

The vast majority of cases have been in China’s central Hubei province, where doctors study patients for this new research. The researchers looked at all adult patients who were admitted to two hospitals in Wuhan, China, and were either discharged or died by January 31.

A separate study in the New England Journal of Medicine said that coronavirus patients could be infected for up to 24 days before showing symptoms. The average time was much shorter, about three days, the study found.

People are most likely to spread the virus when they are the sickest, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads,” the CDC said.

Also the WHO offered the US 60,000 tests last month and the US rejected the offer saying we wanted to make the tests ourselves. At a PC this week both the head of the CDC and Pence “didn’t know” who decided to reject the tests the rest of the world is using.

Did this really happen? I haven’t found anything online about it. The only thing I found in my search was something about problems with test kits sent from the CDC in early February. I’d love to see where this was quoted or linked.

I'm not planning to run to my bank and wring out cash of any amount but I do understand how some may feel better by doing so. The last time I got a large amount of cash from my bank was just before Hurricane Andrew (August 1992) and that was because electricity was off for a long time.

This pandemic is different as there's no disruption of utilities predicted. Still, I get that some may be scared. In the US our banks are FDIC insured. But anyone who's been subjected to situations where cash may be needed may feel more secure to know they have some on hand.

I admit that I thought about the fact that I have some gold bullion in my possession and even though it will not be needed it made me feel more secure, no matter how silly the thought may be. IMO some people are attempting to self soothe and if it makes them feel better no problem.

There will not be a run on banks, this is not that sort of situation.

It’s good to have some on hand for folks to buy free-range eggs and such from a neighbor during times like these. I always have a bit stashed in the winter to pay random people for plowing snow. It might be we need to depend on certain cash services (little guy mechanics, for instance) if businesses close down.

#BREAKING: Dallas County has its first case of community spread of #coronavirus. Dallas County filing a local disaster declaration. Part of it includes a ban on gatherings of more than 500 people effective at 11a Friday. Five new cases announced in Dallas County.

Let me tell you: the people on CNBC who are hammering on about this being a financial crisis are trying to pressure the government into more corporate bailouts. Bailouts for the hotels and cruise lines - not bailouts for regular people. I know because that was the bank strategy at certain failing banks in 2008 to get propped up.

This is a medical crisis. It is a human tragedy. People are going to die and we’re not prepared. It will be an employment crisis - but state governments are already expanding unemployment insurance to hopefully help hourly and gig workers who are laid off or have hours reduced. Hopefully we will ensure everyone who is affected gets appropriate support.

But when they spin it as a financial crisis it’s for one thing - to try to get the Fed to buy equities. The market crash is natural. Would you want to be holding hotel stocks knowing some resort companies may be filing bankruptcy if quarantines last months? I wouldn’t. But once there is a clear path for how the US is finally actually going to address this crisis investors will calm down and get back into stocks.

I strongly think people need to focus on the human response like ensuring there are enough tests and ventilators and let the rich people cry it out a little. Our 401ks won’t matter if our family members are dying.

For the average American family, it is an economic crisis as much or more than a medical crisis.

If they are quarantined or have to self-isolate, the rent/bills don't get paid, eviction is a concern and life just deteriorates, rapidly.

Most people do not have the resources at hand to be off work for a few weeks or months and many live pay cheque to pay cheque.

Most of the people who are positive for CV will recover within a week or two, with mild to moderate symptoms.

The vast majority will not require hospitalization, OTC meds will suffice to ease their symptoms.

Of course, the elderly and immune suppressed etc are at greater risk of dying, as they are from all other illnesses.

But the elderly and very ill, die every day. Its sad but its part of life.

One cannot say this is not an economic crisis, it most certainly is.

30-40 dollars on Amazon. Bought one a year ago and ill never go back. You could rig one up using sink sprayer, appropriate fittings.

All K-12 school buildings will close March 16 through April 5 as the state seeks to address coronavirus, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced in a press release late Thursday.

"This is a necessary step to protect our kids, our families, and our overall public health,” Whitmer said.

“I am working with partners across state government to ensure educators, parents, and students have the support they need during this time, and to ensure our children who rely on school for meals have access to food. I know this will be a tough time, but we’re doing this to keep the most people we can safe. I urge everyone to make smart choices during this time and to do everything they can to protect themselves and their families.”

Whitmer said in a press conference Thursday it was not a decision she took lightly and pointed to other states that have ordered the closure of schools as well.

The order applies to all public, private and boarding school buildings in Michigan.

The state now has 12 presumptive positive tests for coronavirus, up from the first two announced on Tuesday, when the governor declared a state of emergency.

All public universities have canceled or suspended in-person classes, and some private colleges have as well. School districts including Ann Arbor Public Schools, Dearborn Public Schools and Saline Area Schools have announced temporary cancellations related to concerns about the virus.

Regarding Trump reported to have not been tested for the virus. Could it be that he has been tested but it is a matter of national security and stability to a shaky financial market for the President to be reported to be in good health ?

It’s a matter of something, alright, because there’s no way in hades that he hasn’t been tested.
