5k worldwide, while flu deaths in the us from October to March 7 are 22k to 55k in the US alone.
Right. There's a lot of flu this year, and it is deadly. That does not make me feel any better about this pandemic. It does the opposite, as it's a compounded problem.

This disease - UNLIKE the flu - is increasing exponentially. Not x12.

It's a pandemic. At first, I did not get the difference in the math, but it is astronomical. This toll will be at least in the MILLIONS. Please, do not diminish it. It's irresponsible and dangerous.

We ordered thousands of dollars of food for our restaurant yesterday. Normal type of order.
I did call my chef and ask her to really watch her ordering.
Last night "thursday" sales were $320.00.
We sell a lot of seafood at our restaurant. Tomorrow, I'm going in to inventory and place 85% of that beautiful fresh fish into a freezer.
Our monthly lease for our restaurant is $5,200.00. I've not sent them a dime yet for this month.
I'm not even sure WHAT I'm going to send them. I have to keep my employees paid, the lights on and my food vendors paid. No food, no electricity, no employees= bankruptcy.
We've been at this location for 17 years. I told my husband this morning. "What are they going to do? Throw us out? Then what? Find another experienced restaurant to take over? Give the new tenant, if they can find one, 4 months of free rent and $20,000.00 or more in build out costs"?
All of this just sucks.
We've been planning on selling our restaurant this summer. Hubby is 73 and had major open heart surgery 1 year ago this month.
He's working double shifts 6 days a week.
His doctor told him to slow down, that he's "fresh off the table."
Neither hubby or myself have ever seen anything like this in our lives.

BTW. I was in banking for many years. The only way you can get a Small Business Loan from the Small Business Administration (SBA) is if you don't NEED one.
It's always been a big joke in the banking industry.

We're pretty screwed.
Are you in PDX metro area? If you are, send me a msg .

Not sure what you mean by "toll" -- but if you mean a lot of people will have a crappy flu-like illness for a week, I agree. If you mean by "toll" that people will die, I see absolutely no support for that anywhere. The mortality rate is not increasing astronomically. If anything, it will decrease with more testing. There are ~5000 deaths worldwide after way more than a month or two and the number is NOT increasing exponentially.

Yes, compared to 61K deaths annually from the flu in the US alone.

I keep seeing this talking point coming from a certain direction. COVID-19 has a higher death rate than the flu. Also: COVID-19 is not the flu. It is a global pandemic. This matters. It is like comparing annual flu deaths to annual deaths from cancer (10 million) and saying it's nothing. MOO

Please, somebody in the know.
I heard a talk show host announce today, that the United States only has 925,000. Hospital beds, for a country of over 363 million people.
Is this true???

And actually, no it isn't all caps bold bad even to those families. Most of the dx'd will have no, mild or moderate flu-like symptoms and recover.

To any American this is a deadly, serious disease that NO concerned citizen should make light of.

If most people have moderate flu symptoms, great. With the numbers as they stand now: deaths are higher than the recovery in the US right now. Hopefully there will be many more recoveries that will change that very soon.

If you have any older family members or those with other health problems, it's extremely serious. Just hope people don't minimize it.

It's bold caps x1000. If we don't take it seriously, we're screwed.

Be well, all.

What a beautiful story! Bless that helper and that lovely couple. I hope they got her number for a next shopping trip. That story made my night.

I read that she wishes she had got their number but didn't. Now I'm worried for them the next time they have to get groceries. Who's going to help them??

I am beyond PISSED OFF at the people who have caused this hysteria. It is abusive to the most vulnerable in our population and it's shameful. Time to unwatch this thread again.
I agree hysteria is not necessary, and is certainly unhelpful. However: being aware that this is an extremely deadly disease for which we should be prepared is another thing. It will make most people anxious - and it should.

It's a pandemic: not a flu, not a cold.

It's more deadly than anything most - or any - of us have experienced in our lifetimes.

Most might get mild symptoms. That's a good thing. From what I've heard of those who have had it - it's an incredibly horrid and unusually long-lasting disease for those who have even moderate symptoms. For the others - the elderly and vulnerable - it's not mild at all. So all precautions are necessary now.

The word "pandemic" has nothing to do with the seriousness of the illness. All that means is that the disease or illness is prevalent over a whole country or the world. There is no evidence that Corona virus is particularly deadly relative to the flu or anything else for that matter (e.g. car accidents). In fact, it's taking a much lesser toll on the young -- which is fortunate, imo.

I don’t think Tricia’s post telling us to take this virus seriously got carried over from the last thread. Although the “hoax folks” are gone, minimizing this coronavirus situation may endanger the thread. JMO

OK, I AM YELLING AGAIN AND I AM GETTING ANGRY.

IF YOU FEEL THIS IS A HOAX - IF YOU FEEL THIS IS ALL "FAKE NEWS" THEN DO NOT POST ON THIS THREAD. STAY OFF THIS THREAD. THIS THREAD IS FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE TAKING THE VIRUS SERIOUSLY AND WANT TO POST ABOUT FACTS AND ABOUT SOLUTIONS. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO YOUR OPINION BUT YOUR OPINION WILL CAUSE THIS THREAD DO GO UP IN FLAMES AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE CAN COME HERE AND GET FACTS. WE NEED TO TAKE THIS VIRUS SERIOUSLY AND THAT IS WHY THIS THREAD IS ON WEBSLEUTHS. PLEASE GO TO ANOTHER DISCUSSION IN THE MISSING OR IN COLD CASES AND DO SOME GOOD.

Not yelling now. We should not get hysterical about the virus but we need to discuss this virus seriously. A big difference between the two. In the same vein, we should not shrug our shoulders and say it's no big deal and it is a media hysteria.

While I respect you have the right to your opinion I have the right to ask you to leave this thread so we can discuss the virus without disruption.

Rarely do I pull this statement out but here it comes; I am the owner and the final decisions on what can be discussed and rules are all on me. I want to be as inclusive as possible but in a real National Emergency declared by the president, I have a responsibility to make sure we discuss the facts and we discuss virus in a logical and factual way.

Thank you.
Tricia.
PS. I am not getting hysterical about the virus I am getting angry at the thought of how fast this thread could literally shut the whole forum down, Our wonderful mods do not need the stress.

Taking a guess Trino. For this thread. No politics. None.
Even without politics, we are going through a new thread daily, and sometimes two.
If we discussed politics on this thread, it would probably blow up to 10 or more threads a day.
I've been on this thread since it's beginning.
We all have so much to talk about, just dealing with this virus and it's effects on each of us.
You could contact the owner of this website, and ask her if she would be willing to start a new thread that has to deal with politics.
I have no idea what her answer would be.
In the meantime. I'm sure that there are about a zillion political threads about this virus on the web.
:-)
Kali

Confused about what exactly is a political post. Can we not criticize someone because of their actions, despite their elected position? What about someone who is NOT elected? Can we criticize? I don't understand what a person's political party has to do with an action which is questionable. Thanks for the answers.

#1: True that the term 'pandemic' has more to do with numbers - it infers that it is easily caught and spreads like wildfire.

#2: Your statement that "there is no evidence that it is more deadly than the flu or car accidents" is non-factual. There is evidence this virus is at least 10x more deadly than the flu - most likely up to 40x as deadly. Do the math - right now it is 60x as deadly if one does the math on one's own, but the CDC and other officials/experts claim it is about 10x more deadly than the flu - for now. As for car accidents - nevermind.

#3: As for the young, yes, it takes a much lesser toll on them. Thank God. It's further proof that this is NOTHING LIKE THE FLU.

(Off point: So interesting how you start with a fact, put in a non-fact, then end with a fact.)

Oh KALI! I'm so sorry you are dealing with this! I wish I had some helpful advice but I can't come up with any. This whole situation STINKS!

NEWS: FDA just granted emergency use authorization to @thermofisher's #COVID19 diagnostic.

The @ThermoFisher RT-PCR #COVID19 diagnostic runs in ~four hours, according to the company:
Thermo Fisher Scientific - FDA Issues Emergency Use Authorization to Thermo Fisher Scientific for Diagnostic Test Used to Detect COVID-19
David Lim on Twitter

This is no different than what other laboratory analyzers from Roche and Siemens are currently doing. Just another brand, same test.

And the 4 hour turnaround time is a bit miseading. The specimen preparation prior to putting the sample on any of these analyzers is 2-3 hours.

I heard it too, from a Dr. Jen Aston interview. So I googled and found this:

Number of all hospital beds in the U.S. 1975-2017. Trends indicate that the overall number of hospital beds in the U.S. is decreasing. In 1975, there were about 1.5 million hospital beds in the U.S., but until 2017 the number dropped to just about 931 thousand.
