That's been the strangest part...there was so much hand soap in every single store I went to. Are people not washing their hands and just relying on sanitizer? I have a few little bottles in my car and my purse, but I only use them when I can't get to a sink.

Ooo good to know. I don’t use sanitizer at home. Never have.

A Dr has said in the newspapers here that dish washing liquid is also useful for washing your hands from the virus if you can’t get hand soap anywhere.

I use dish liquid a lot for hand washing. Always have. If home, where I should be, I’m not compulsive about hand washing, unless using bathroom, in kitchen, moving from task to task.

Re: WH presser (linked many times) Dr. Birx reminded us, ALL respiratory viruses are contagious, as most of us know. But with the sudden need for cleaning chemicals & sanitizers, I guess a lot of people were not aware......smh

This is the THE best explanation and the best advice I have seen yet. Boris Johnson starts speaking at 23.00.

I encountered the same thing. I went to get some extra soap for bathroom, kitchen, and for laundry, and there was PLENTY of soap.

No sanitzer.

I think people are fixated on sanitizer.

jmo

True. And my family is going through hand soap like mad. At least I can still get that.

Board approved our closure last night.
We will remain closed until at least March 31. Reassessment on the 26th.
Because I read here and am head of safety team, I pushed for April 6th, knowing this will get much worse. Two weeks is not going to help any. Too little too late.
NO materials should be returned. We are locking the drop boxes.
Promoting our cloudlibrary.
The public cannot be trusted not to infect staff of each other.
WI FI is available from outside the building for everyone to use. You can sit in your car and keep up with classes and work in the parking lot. Or bring a beach chair and sit on the lawn.e
As we left last night we grabbed gloves for home and raided the first aid kit. A co-worker watched a man spit on the ground and then spit on his hands at the gas station before grabbing the nozzle at the pump.
Glove up!
I was able to convey the seriousness of the situation calmly to my office mates all week because I was prepared and they needed to get ready.
I ordered pet food for home delivery for a co-worker that couldn't afford to load up on all family groceries and pet food at the same time.
I am the voice on the library voice mail. Had to make the closure announcement for recording and I missed saying goodbye to everyone. It breaks my heart.
It felt like doomsday Christmas break.

Thank you for all these details! Good idea for accessing wi-fi outside of the library in your car, or through other businesses, but staying in your car. Good to know if your internet goes down at home.

I had a similar experience regarding closing down my office at work on Thursday night and transitioning to setting up at home, working remotely. I had to get large enough USB drives to copy all my documents, clear it with IT, and pack up all the hard copies of documents, etc. that I think I will need for at least two weeks. If I need to go in and get other materials, I plan to go in late in the evening when no one is around. It was a strange and eerie feeling. I felt very sad, packing up to be away for an indeterminate period of time. Those of us who are in high risk categories, and if our positions lend themselves to the option of working remotely, were given this option, and there will be teleconferencing for essential meetings, which start Monday. A larger group meeting that I have on Wednesday of next week is in a room that won't have this option, so I don't plan to attend. I am practicing social distancing. Last week I went to a meeting in a conference room that is designed for 15 people and it was packed. The 3-6 foot social distancing was impossible, so I have opted out of going in-person.

People were just walking past soap to look for sanitizer....and all the soap was on sale. You'd think that would be what people were stocking up on, but if it wasn't toilet paper or sanitizer, they didn't want it!

I am permanently attached to my can of Lysol Wipes. :)

I ran out. I stupidly got only one can when they were still available at Target. I really need them to open doors like at my office, and stuff. I’ve been cleaning with bleach on a rag but it’s not as efficient for handles and knobs.

ive just found my love of these this week. Always kind of eye rolled the price of convenience. Until this week or so. I don’t have a stash so I’m going to start making my own I think if I can find those supplies at this point.( The shopping crisis hit our area Thursday night)

and don’t get me started on swiffering. Another generation or two and operating a real broom or gasp a mop is going to be a lost art

Do you belong to Costco (or another warehouse club)? Long before this virus outbreak, DH and I have been buying Clorox wipes in multi-packs. There are usually 5 large canisters in each bundle pack with 75-80 wipes per canister. I use them daily to wipe kitchen and bathroom counters, phones, remotes, keys, steering wheels, keyboards, etc. We probably buy the bundle pack 3 or 4 times a year so we never run out.

Yes, imo, wiping removes it immediately.

I hope not, what a bad practice....imo, of course. Or maybe people think sanitized hands prevents them from getting g a respiratory virus?
Matters none how clean my hands are if John Doe sprays me with his snot particles.

I heard something third hand that is one positive from this mess. A friend’s co-worker’s wife works at a clinic. They usually have @ 7 cases of the flu each day during the season. That number has plummeted. The reason they believe it has dropped is because people are now washing their hands more!

I felt that was some good news in the middle of all this.

They’re all gone. Can’t even get them online really.

I'm glad DH got them on his last trip two weeks ago :) We're good with paper towels, Kleenex, TP, and Cottonelle Wipes.

Article on CNN by Dr. Tom Frieden
Covid-19 is different from flu and we must respond differently

Covid-19 is different from flu and we must respond differently, former CDC director says - CNN

He has a pinned tweet for this on his Twitter page.

Unfortunately, IMO, the percentages he cites (red text) in the following paragraph near the end of the article are for the total general population (all age groups) and DO NOT APPLY to the highest-risk groups:
"Finally, most people who get flu or Covid-19 do well; 80 or 90% of those infected with the novel virus have mild, moderate or no symptoms. However many people die from it, this will be too many. Although the coronavirus pandemic will certainly get worse before it gets better, it will get better. And even at the worst of the coronavirus pandemic, many people (no one knows what proportion) won't get infected, and, of those who do get infected, 99 out of 100 will recover."

The WHO estimates, based on Chinese data, that around 22% of people over 80 who got the virus died (that's the case fatality rate), and 8% of people in their 70s (my age group). Here is the link for the WHO report, released in February: https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-report.pdf

Just call me Ms. doom and gloom...

This is MAJOR!!!!

If no protection under OSHA, many professionals will QUIT their jobs. Major law suits against employers.

Did/could the Presential SOE have the authority to override existing laws and safety protection for employees?

When I have a momme t I'll read the actual law that passed to see if anything was included for protection or override process for employers.
