Wondering What It’s Like Living With COVID-19? This Denver Man Can Tell You

“Ian was diagnosed on March 6, one of the first people identified in the state. He is considered presumptive positive, meaning his results still have to be confirmed by the CDC. He is one of 77 people, as of March 13, who state health officials say have the virus in Colorado.”

[...]

“After Ian’s diagnosis, they received a legal document explaining what they were to do.

“So immediately following the news from the doctor, we received a call from the Denver Health Department,” Ian explained. “A woman introduced herself as the contact for us — for our family. We are to stay in the house for 14 days with no contact with anyone else.”

Ian is on an isolation order per the Denver Department of Public Health, separated from the rest of his family. His wife and two boys are under mandatory quarantine. The entire family cannot leave or conduct regular business.

Ian Facetimes with his boys at bedtime and texts his wife for meals.

When Ian wants to go outside, “they clear a path for me,” Ian said. His wife makes sure he can’t touch anything and he gets to enjoy some air outside. His family, he said, is doing great.”

I don't have a link as it was on television this a.m. Not even sure what channel it was. Woman said Lysol etc. was effective and to spray surfaces and let air dry. I didn't know about the air dry part but it makes sense.
Yes, you are supposed to let it sit dry. That ensures it stays on the surface long enough to be effective.

Question for those of you with school-age children: Are extracurricular activities like dance, gymnastics, swimming, sports, martial arts, etc. lessons being canceled?

My daughter's Karate class is canceled...there were only about 12 kids in the class so I was a bit surprised, since school is still going ahead here after March Break(for now anyway). In our area, the Girl Guides have also stopped, and all the sports stuff.

A while back someone asked about the possibility of Mosquitos passing on Coronavirus , found this article this evening.

Can Mosquitoes Transmit the Coronavirus? - American Mosquito Control Association

• At this time, we have no data to suggest that COVID-19 or other similar coronaviruses (e.g. SARS, MERS) are spread by mosquitoes or ticks.
yes I asked several days ago. ALSO FLIES?

Seems to me this is possible although I haven't seen any studies yet.
Here in the south we still have lots of flies since
we didn't get much winter weather here.
Is the virus in our bloodstream? If so it seems
mosquitos could spread it.
And flies carry all kinds of nasties on their furry
legs. I'll still be careful since we don't know.

You really need to read the fine print on anything that claims to disinfect. Most people just spray and then immediately wipe dry (using a spray cleaner here for example)

When in fact the fine print directions might say “spray Surface and allow to remain wet for 3 minutes to effectively kill xyz germs”

this is just general info based on using various cleaning solutions over the years. There’s usually a “keep wet” time frame for effectiveness

The CDC has an entire page dedicated to cleaning and sanitation for COVID19 I'm posting how to disinfect hard surface. CDC cover them ALL including laundry for the infected.

How to clean and disinfect:
Surfaces
  • Wear disposable gloves when cleaning and disinfecting surfaces. Gloves should be discarded after each cleaning. If reusable gloves are used, those gloves should be dedicated for cleaning and disinfection of surfaces for COVID-19 and should not be used for other purposes. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and disinfection products used. Clean hands immediately after gloves are removed.
  • If surfaces are dirty, they should be cleaned using a detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.
  • For disinfection, diluted household bleach solutions, alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol, and most common EPA-registered household disinfectants should be effective.
    • Diluted household bleach solutions can be used if appropriate for the surface. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for application and proper ventilation. Check to ensure the product is not past its expiration date. Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser. Unexpired household bleach will be effective against coronaviruses when properly diluted.
      • Prepare a bleach solution by mixing:
        • 5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) bleach per gallon of water or
        • 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water
    • Products with EPA-approved emerging viral pathogens claimspdf iconexternal icon are expected to be effective against COVID-19 based on data for harder to kill viruses. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for all cleaning and disinfection products (e.g., concentration, application method and contact time, etc.).
  • For soft (porous) surfaces such as carpeted floor, rugs, and drapes, remove visible contamination if present and clean with appropriate cleaners indicated for use on these surfaces. After cleaning:
    • Launder items as appropriate in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. If possible, launder items using the warmest appropriate water setting for the items and dry items completely, or
Use products with the EPA-approved emerging viral pathogens claims (examples at this linkpdf iconexternal icon) that are suitable for porous surfaces.

@JerseyGirl How would I add the CDC link for disinfecting to the time line?

OK. I’m trying to be cute, but shouldn’t liquor store shelves be empty rather than TP shelves? After all, we’re all gonna be cooped up with our spouses and kids.

Hopefully they’ll remain fixated and leave me some hand soap/laundry soap/dish soap until husband will attempt another shopping trip
He went last night and was just stunned at the lack of ...well everything lol. His last grocery run was just Tuesday so He didn’t expect the drastic change.

I ordered some personal toiletries from amazon Friday didn’t want to risk being without body wash etc

We normally do one bigger grocery shop and another small one per week.

I encountered the same thing. I went to get some extra soap for bathroom, kitchen, and for laundry, and there was PLENTY of soap.

No sanitzer.

I think people are fixated on sanitizer.

''Old-fashioned soap and water may be your best protection during the pandemic

Microbiologist Keith Warriner said, if you're using a hand sanitizer, it must contain at least 60 per cent alcohol — the ingredient that kills the virus.

"If you haven't got enough [alcohol] in there, it doesn't do anything. It has basically dried the virus onto your hand," said Warriner, a professor at the University of Guelph.

Even if your sanitizer has the right ingredients, Warriner still believes washing with soap provides the best protection because it not only kills the virus, it also washes it away.

"You're actually physically removing it."

"The thing that really takes our immune system down is being dehydrated, being stressed, lack of sleep."

''There have been reports across the globe that people are also stockpiling toilet paper. While the product is a staple of daily hygiene, it won't help ward off the coronavirus.

Instead, the run on toilet paper is likely caused by panic buying which has caught on with many shoppers. ''

Warriner said people think "if someone's buying it, then I have to buy it."

He also wonders whether some people may be confusing the coronavirus with the norovirus — a different virus which causes diarrhea.''
Thank you, my husband was a paraplegic and his doctors told him to wash his hands with Dial (orange original) antibacterial soap. When he went out, he could use a gel hand sanitizers. They stressed that soap and water was better to keep germs at bay.

“Look, we’ve got to abandon this idea that this virus is contained,” Makary said. “It is at large, and assume it’s on every door handle and on every car door and with every handshake.”
What to do:
Wash hands REPEATEDLY
Engage in social distancing
Take all precautions seriously

On February 13, 2020, Los Angeles authorities spoke out against a number of bullying incidents and assaults towards the Asian-American community, including a middle schooler being beaten and hospitalized. A 16-year-old boy in San Fernando Valley was also physically attacked by bullies in his high school who accused him of having the coronavirus because he is Asian American.

HSE working to 'ensure sufficient testing facilities' in place by Monday for Covid-19 following 'high demand'

(Ireland)

THE HSE HAS today said it is working to ensure “sufficient testing facilities” are in place by Monday for the Covid-19 coronavirus following “high demand” in recent days.

A number of people, including GPs, have reported having issues contacting the HSE via phone in relation to patients with symptoms associated with the coronavirus, in recent days.

In a statement today, the HSE said “GP Out of Hours Services, HSELive and 112/999 have been receiving a very high number of calls today from people seeking access to testing for COVID-19″.

It is now working to have additional electronic testing facilities up and running by Monday to meet the increase in demand.

Well, that's pretty quick..... Maybe we need to give them a call.

Rhode Island child tests positive for COVID-19; got Rudy Gobert autograph | Boston.com

Posting this again. Now, it is unclear if the child got the virus from a player/autograph, if he did, everyone should wake up. I assume his contact with the player was very brief! Moo

Yeah but we’ve seen his hygiene practices and his consideration for others. The dude likely coughed in his hands or touched his face and then shook the child’s hand. That’s enough.

We also need to be asking why a child is getting tested for this. Clearly they’re experiencing more than a routine cold if they’re getting tested which goes to show this virus impacts more than just the old.

Meanwhile in US....Stanford lives every university's nightmare....CALIFORNIA

An undergraduate has tested positive for COVID-19, and nearly all undergraduates must evacuate campus by Wednesday at 5 p.m., University President Marc Tessier-Lavigne wrote in an email Friday evening, in a reversal that came after new restrictions on public gatherings from Santa Clara County Friday morning and President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency Friday afternoon.

The undergrad who tested positive is self-isolating, Tessier-Lavigne wrote, confirming the first known case of the virus in an undergraduate student. Three cases, including two at Stanford Medicine, had been announced previously.
