Not sure how Alex Altman is qualified to opine that a sufficient number of people are going to die to warrant closing down entire cities and countries. He's free to stay home.
How are you qualified to convince people that they are not in danger if they don't distance themselves?

Excellent post Ms Marple. Yes. I think most of us will survive, health wise.
However, I see a blood bath for small businesses.
Worldwide.
The reverberations of this virus on our economies is going to be unprecedented.
Until there is a trustworthy vaccine, small business owners that deal with the public are in free fall.
What a crazy time we are going through.
Complete human panic. Worldwide.
Personally, I'm really not sure that all of this panic is justified.
Probably about 3 weeks ago one of my patrons asked my opinion about him starting a small business. I told him to wait and see what happens with the coronavirus.

(It may seem odd to ask a librarian for advice like that, but I’ve done much odder things, like doing one older gentleman’s online shopping with a gift card he couldn’t figure out how to use. He couldn’t use a computer, either, so I did the entire transaction and even suggested certain clothing items.)

I want to focus now and then here on the positives. There are always positives. On Nextdoor people are reaching out saying that if anyone needs help or supplies or child care or remote tutoring they’re available for free. Just beautiful.
Ok. So today I was feeling a bit stressed out and worrying about all of this, and I decided I needed to get out of my head. The best way I know how to do that, is to help someone else. So, I went over to visit one of our neighbors. They are a lovely little elderly couple, the husband is on dialysis. They of course didn't get any toilet paper, and were low on supplies. I went to our local store and got the items she needed. There wasn't any toilet paper, but I gave her a pkg of mine, because I am well stocked. She was so happy, to have someone to chat with for a bit. I made sure she had my telephone number, and assured her that they weren't alone. It made me feel better reaching out to help someone else.

According to CDC statistics you posted earlier, there have been at least 33K deaths in the US in the last few months from an unknown virus. Maybe the flu, maybe not.

Is it likely every country has the same ratio by population of deaths from an unknown virus that are automatically attributed to the flu?

No one knows anymore what virus people are dying of - especially the US. I suspect Canada doesn't know true figures either as it seems we are lagging on COVID-19 testing as well.

Jmo.

Oh my! Do you truly think that real medicine doesn't exist?!

(Reuters) - Alphabet's Google (GOOGL.O) said on Saturday that it was working with the U.S. government to develop a nationwide website that would help Americans with questions about coronavirus symptoms, risk factors and testing.

"We are fully aligned and continue to work with the U.S. government to contain the spread of COVID-19, inform citizens, and protect the health of our communities," Google said in a statement on Twitter.

I REALLY want to know.
What is going on in China?
How many are still quarantined?
How many out of quarantine?
I cannot believe that in this day and age, we still have radio silence from a country with billions of citizens.
I'm going to make a prediction, because of their leader's cloak and dagger behavior, China is going to experience the worst lack of tourism in over 100 years.
Which in my opinion they should.

An update on the new cases in mainland China now, where for the second day new cases that came to China from overseas surpassed the number of locally transmitted new infections.

Mainland China had 20 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infections on March 14, up from 11 cases a day earlier. Of Saturday’s cases, 16 involved travellers entering China from overseas, it said.

The remaining four cases were recorded in the city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus outbreak is believed to have first begun. Saturday also marked the tenth consecutive day where Hubei province, of which Wuhan is the capital, recorded zero new infections outside Wuhan.

All this reducing of hours at stores that are normally 24 hours reminds me of the informal Wafflehouse index used to gauge storm severity:

The index has three levels, based on the extent of operations and service at the restaurant following a storm:[2][3]
  • GREEN: full menu – restaurant has power and damage is limited or no damage at all.
  • YELLOW: limited menu – no power or only power from a generator, or food supplies may be low.
  • RED: the restaurant is closed – indicating severe damage or severe flooding.

Waffle House Index - Wikipedia

Have there been any reports on Waffle Houses reducing hours or cutting their menus due to Coronavirus? If the Waffle Index goes red, than we are all doomed!

(That's my attempt at levity for the night :p:D )
Around these parts, it's Wawa. Open 24/7...though the Super Wawa's are also gas stations, so I anticipate they'll be open.

I feel like I am now watching someone have a baby......moo

Yes, its like a nerve racking tension. I don't feel secure with the decisions being made by our government. I do not feel protected, items that could/would protect me are unavailable. I know if I get sick, the lack of testing and possible medical care gravely concern me.

Yes, times are uneasy....

Voting for ALL by mail---in my opinion, that opens us up to a lot of voter fraud potential. It worries me.
I agree there's some potential for fraud, though in my opinion it's less than the possible manipulation issues faced by the polling places/machines at the in-person sites.

That said, I'm in favor of everyone having the OPTION to vote by mail, not that everyone should be FORCED to vote by mail (although some states have done just that).

I don't expect much from the government. I fear it will be like hurricane "relief".

some of the latest developments:

  • N.L. and P.E.I. announced their first cases on Saturday.
  • Saskatchewan confirmed its first two presumptive cases.
  • B.C. detected nine new cases, bringing the total to 73.
  • U.S. to expand travel ban to include U.K. and Ireland as of Monday night.
  • Spain to restrict movement of people and close shops after seeing 1,500 new cases.
  • Saudi Arabia halts all international flights to the kingdom for two weeks.
  • Denmark is closing its borders to travellers until April 13.
  • Second Cup no longer accepting cash at its coffee shops.
  • CBC/Radio-Canada and TV distributors make 24-hour news channels widely available.
Countries around the world on Saturday continued to close borders, impose strict entry and quarantine requirements and restrict large gatherings in efforts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. The virus has infected more than 145,000 people worldwide and more than 5,400 have died.

The Canadian government says any citizen who's abroad should get back home while it's still possible. That's a step up from previous advice, which urged travellers outside the country to think about coming home.

Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne warned on Twitter that commercial travel options might not remain available amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as some countries have already taken measures such as stopping or sharply limiting air traffic.

Marc Lipsitch

we must focus on reducing social contacts in order to slow transmission, by keeping people at home and out of public spaces. Conventions, parades, sports events, and other large public gatherings that risk transmission should be canceled or postponed. Efforts to reduce contacts should focus on the most vulnerable (elderly and those with certain serious chronic medical conditions), but not be restricted to them, because all of us can become infected and transmit the virus, even without severe symptoms.

Working from home, staying home when sick, hand-washing, covering coughs, and the like are all common-sense ways to reduce contacts and slow spread. Building ventilation should be improved wherever possible. The shameful lack of soap and hot water in many public school buildings needs to be fixed. Suspending public transportation, houses of worship, and other close quarters may soon be needed.

The more you overstock those supplies, the less is available for your sick neighbors, and for doctors, dentists, and emergency response personnel.

Didn't they say this morning that they weren't?
CNN said that, not google. One of their companies, Verily, commented with some work they were doing.

@MimosaMornings you know we are all curious as to your line of work. It involves hotels, per your previous post, lol.
Hope you’re safe! I’m glad you will have your feet on the ground now.
Thank you @momrids6!
I might do that when we get through this difficult next weeks/months. Right now I’m concentrating on my loved ones health and my sanity as we isolate in hopes of protecting them as much as possible.
My spouse still has his job and they are still going strong so we will be ok!!
