are there state by state websites set up or only the john hopkins one? i have not been able to find much info about mississippi, except that they only have 1 case (which i find ridiculously impossible. i bet they don't have tests). i am in sweden, but i am from mississippi, and my entire family is there. seeing how quickly it's spreading across the states now, it can only be a matter of time before it's widespread. sigh...

Havng spent the day on the phone talking to local experts of various stripes, there are *many* very serious, knowledgeable people who fear this analysis is correct; NYC is headed for a Wuhan or Lombardy-style healthcare system crash.

The Better Alternative: Shut down the city this week. Close everything but grocery stores, banks, and pharmacies. Convert schools into food distribution centers. Bring in the National Guard to provide essential services like food and augment police and emergency services. Issue checks to all New Yorkers for the length of the quarantine for at least $500 per person per month. Limit travel outside of the region. Slow the growth of the virus to a crawl immediately.

NJ Governor (for now) appears to be allowing school districts to make their own decisions, seemingly to allow for one more day (or half day) for students to pick up textbooks and work packets. Two districts recently closed in my area, including the district my kids attended. Also...

Movie theaters and malls in hard-hit Bergen County are planning to close amid the new coronavirus outbreak as officials remind parents that school closures are not a time for children to socialize.

More 350 public school districts have canceled classes at least for a few days or moved their learning online for at least a week.

Gov. Phil Murphy said on Friday it's a matter of "when, and not an if" New Jersey will order all public schools closed. Officials in Bergen, Burlington and Hunterdon counties have already shut all their public schools. The Archdiocese of Newark and the Diocese of Trenton also have closed their Catholic schools.

**The purpose of the closures is to encourage social distancing and slow the spread of COVID-19 among students and staff who spend their days in close quarters.

**"Social distancing can be very effective but you have to do it properly," said Ocean County Health Coordinator Dan Regyne. "It's not playtime. It doesn't mean that while I'm off from school for two weeks it's like a snow day where you're getting together with friends to go sledding. The weather is nicer but we don't need people going out into the community and going to the mall and bowling alleys and the movie theaters."

How can they even wrap their heads around this? Adults can’t even do this...I can’t even do this...

Some kids must be really scared. I recall how scared some students have been during mass shooter drills, etc.

ETA: I’d be curious to hear what all your children and grandchildren are saying to you guys about all this, how you are approaching the subject, what their responses are, etc.

I’m sure they are bummed about not being able to see their friends and do their activities.

It's Sunday morning and I'm getting ready for what will be our last congregational worship service for a while. Tomorrow our elders are meeting to find ways to care for the seniors in our church and community who are self isolating.

Thanks to the poster who mentioned way up thread, that their community's youth have volunteered to pick up groceries and pharmacy supplies for their vulnerable seniors. We are putting a similar plan into effect.

After today, we'll be meeting in small groups of six. I'm looking forward to the small group worship, but I will miss my church family, the worship teams, the choir, the potlucks and fellowship times.

If your worship group is doing something similar, do you mind sharing ideas?

So many airport workers already getting the virus...off the top of my head San Jose, Denver, Thailand...

meanwhile, if you search on twitter for "o'hare," you can see the chaos at major american airports. 8- hour lines to get through customs at terminal 5 (international). police are handing out water and disinfectant wipes. similar situation at DFW.

ETA: it CANNOT be safe to be in those crowds right now.

I am new here so I don't want to say the wrong thing. I live in Northern California and we have had 1 positive that has since recovered and 1 new one tonight that is self isolating. I just don't know what to believe. Is this a real thing or is this a media driven panic of the month?

Get your information from the most reliable source that exists. One of the problems of our society is that everyone is an expert, and personal impressions have as much weight as expert findings. But don't get sucked into that false belief. Know the difference between media or political statements that are not based on medical facts, and those that are.

The World Health Organisation is doing its best to keep the world updated and informed.

Well, that's a total puzzle-there were cases with flu like symptoms that were not positive for flu, there was no test for covid, so how could this have led anyone to conclude there weren't community spread of covid?
US response has not been good at all because we fumbled around with the faulty tests. Why didn't US take test from WHO? Why insist on making our own?
