The reality for me is this.

My kids work in high contact jobs in the public.
My husband is high risk.
Covid19 is contagious without symptoms.
Covid19 lives in air and on surfaces for hours.

The ONLY way I could keep my DH from getting it if one of my kids brought it home would be for him to live in a mask 100% of the time AT HOME as well as practicing all other safeguards with hand washing, etc.

I just don’t see that happening. So that is why I beg others to be cautious so that my kids don’t get it on their jobs.

Don’t you all see this as reality unless you live alone or with some else who can totally isolate? In small case numbers the risk is low, but as the caseload grows not so much. And that’s an example of why it takes us all working together.
If you kids live at home, I'd insist they either
take a leave of absence, call in sick or quit the jobs.
It's simply not worth the risk to your husband.
There will always be other jobs.
Stay Home- Stay Safe

I called my parents today who are in Newfoundland, where the first presumptive case was announced yesterday. They're in the 65+ age bracket and only get out to do their shopping once a month. Yesterday was their shopping day and they had a lot of trouble finding some eggs, milk, and bread in their town and had no luck getting any toilet paper and sanitizer. Luckily there are other family members around who can pitch in and help make sure that they are okay but I've never felt so far away from them as I feel today. :( I wish people were more considerate. After I got off the phone, I think the magnitude of this fully hit me and I cried. A lot. I'm okay now...I'm sure mom and dad will be okay. I really hope they will be. But I'm so scared for all the people out there who have no one to help them.

That is sad. I live in a rural county, and yet our county has the daily telephone call system that calls daily to ones deemed at risk for many things. They have to answer, or squad comes out. Neighbors here take care of neighbors, and those squads are also bringing supplies to folks who don’t have family or neighbors who will

We have a spot for packages, shoes and outer coats. ( still chilly in MI). We never wore shoes in our house anyways but now instead of going in the closet, they stay out in the garage. Hand sanitizer station and lysol for the boxes before coming in.
When I come home from work (RN) I drive into my garage and enter the house into a laundry room. I've been leaving my robe there so I can change out of my scrubs & shoes, put them right in the laundry and go take a shower. Then the robe is washed and left in the laundry room for the next work day. My husband and I are both in the "at risk" category so I feel it's necessary.

Reminding myself and you all to post in the media thread as well.

This is so sad to me. Two ER Doctors Test Positive For COVID-19

One doctor in his 70s in Paterson, New Jersey, tested positive for the virus after coming down with respiratory symptoms, while another ER doctor in Kirkland, Washington, has symptoms consistent with the virus, the American College of Emergency Physicians said in a statement shared first with TPM.

I think earlier on CNN he stated he is all for a complete shutdown. Moo as I was brushing my teeth and only caught bits and pieces. But, as I posted earlier, closing a handful of things in certain areas isn’t helpful, imo. All we have to do is drive over the county/city/state lines to find open establishments. Moo
Dr. Fauci going to be on Fox News soon.

I 100% agree. My youngest works in a pet store and her job is the food dept manager. She is trained in safe food handling because people use fresh foods / meats for their dogs more now. I am hoping her hours are not cut. But, I am also hoping she doesn’t bring any germs home to me - a cancer patient.

We have been super careful in keeping our distance from one another in my little 900 square foot house. I stay in my room, or sit on the lanai, while she is doing her food prep, packing her lunch, doing her laundry, etc.

I let the mail sit in the mailbox for 24 hours or so before I wander out there. Most of it goes straight to the recycle bin before I come back in the house.

Oh, that's amazing! More communities need to adopt that. So many people out there need help right now.

Think about the trickle-down impact on businesses that will lose money due to all the sports events being cancelled. Sports bars/restaurants, pizza/carryout/catering venues for televised sports, and, of course, major loss of revenue if MLB season is delayed for several weeks or longer.

There will be a hundred times more bankruptcies than deaths, when all this is over.

....

This is not imo a good job on top of the 6 plus week delay in telling the world. I for one do not and never will trust china. Infact china should be paying everyones health bill. Jmo

I am not expert enough in the history of the epidemic in China to comment on the timeline or the exact details as you describe.

However, I am very impressed with what I saw on that video about how rigorous the quarantine was. And how the US is not nearly capable of maintaining that kind of quarantine.

So it has me very happy I live in a small town and not a large US city which is at risk

School bus driver's in my county will be delivering lunch to the bus stops.
Bartow County Schools
As long as the drivers are protected also, I think that's one of the great things happening during this worrying time. They just implemented a plan in my area, but parents must go with the child to the school for pickup for breakfast and lunch. They're requesting that no one get out of their vehicles for pickup.
I feel bad for the ones that don't have vehicles, or just one vehicle and the spouse or SO needs it for work. I live in an area where the whole school is free lunch. I think bringing the meals to the bus stop is such a great idea. Some children are in terrible situations ie: abuse or where there are drugs involved so no one will take them to be fed.

I expect crime to escalate! I just returned from a convenient store, I only wanted a loaf of wheat bread (none available). People are “hot”. Tempers are beginning to flare. A guy at the counter wanted a pack of cigs the clerk told him “we are out”, I thought the guy was going to shoot her. People are driving aggressively in parking lots & streets with low speed limits. WMT & Lowe’s both have full parking lots, as most of the restaurants I passed. I didn’t go by Taco Bell, idk if anyone even eats at ours, I have never been, I have no idea what that kind of food is, nor do I want to. Some people had extended days off work to watch the ball games, so they are angry they wasted vacation days and/or drove to Nashville, only to have the games cancelled.

CT - 21 Total Cases a/o 3/15/2020:

COVID-19 patient from Hartford treated at UConn and released to home isolation

HARTFORD, Conn. — Officials at UConn Health in Farmington said Sunday that the first patient to have a positive test for COVID-10 has been treated and released to home isolation.

The patient, a man in his 50s, was discharged from the hospital and sent home, where he will be isolated.

Officials said all precautions were followed from the time the patient arrived at the ER to the time he was discharged. He spent only one night in the hospital.

Gov. Lamont announced Saturday that the state's total number of positive coronavirus cases is now at 20 and number that grew to 21 by Sunday.

In a release, Lamont confirms that as of 5 p.m., nine additional Connecticut residents tested positive -- including the first cases that have been detected in Hartford and New Haven Counties.

That number did not last long, as late last night, UConn Health confirmed its first case of COVID-19, bringing the total up to 21.

Lamont also signed a third executive order since the enactment of the emergency declarations earlier this week.

The order issued today:

  1. Relaxes in-person open meeting requirements to minimize large gatherings, with safeguards to provide remote public access;
  2. Allows pharmacists to compound and sell hand sanitizer;
  3. Waives requirements for pharmacists to use certain personal protective equipment when working with non-hazardous, sterile compounds;
  4. Authorizes refunds of liquor permit fees for special events that have since been canceled;
  5. Waives face-to-face interview requirements for Temporary Family Assistance;
  6. Authorizes the Commissioner of Early Childhood to waive certain licensing and other requirements to maintain and increase the availability of childcare; and
  7. Authorizes the Office of Health Strategy to waive Certificates of Need and other requirements to ensure adequate availability of healthcare resources and facilities.
A county-by-county breakdown of the positive cases is as follows:
  • Fairfield County: 15
  • Hartford County: 1
  • Litchfield County: 3
  • New Haven County: 1
“The number of cases announced today reinforces for us what we knew was already going to happen: this virus is spreading and it is here in Connecticut,” Governor Lamont said. “I urge all of my fellow residents to take preventative measures like limiting large gatherings and keeping a safe social distance. Our state has taken critical measures to maximize public health and those steps will continue.”

Coronavirus Ireland: All pubs asked to close as Government urges against house parties

All pubs have been asked to close in a bid to tackle the spread of coronavirus, Health Minister Simon Harris has confirmed.

Following a meeting with the Vintners' Federation of Ireland this evening, Mr Harris said that all pubs and bars, including hotel bars, should close from this evening until at least March 29.

The Government is also advising against house parties as they urge people to practice social distancing.
Noooo
Why close pubs and not restaurants, and I would not be in favor of restaurants closing either. Have there been ANY reports of pub coronavirus?
MOO

This is such a good point. There are only the two of us at home, DH and myself (and 2 cats). We both go out, myself less than he. I have stopped subbing, quit going to the gym and yoga class. I run to the local business coffee shop early in the morning (for now). I order pet food from Chewy.

He is a psychologist, so is still seeing clients one-on-one, keeping a good distance from each person. He runs out Sunday morning for the paper. He recently just returned from the pharmacy (RiteAid) because he had to pick up his meds. And he went to Tractor Supply for bird seed, which I did not ask him to do.... I do make him take a Lysol wipe with him everywhere.

In reality, as said in quoted post, it's not 100% guaranteed if there is more than one of you in the household, as for one living all alone going nowhere. JMO

ETA He did find and buy more paper towels and toilet paper at the RiteAid. We didn't need anymore, so am about to start handing it out to family and friends. :oops:

I think the worst fallout from this virus will be mental, social and economic.

or see if they can switch to less risky jobs.
