This thread movies so quickly that I have trouble keeping up if I leave my computer :D Some of you mentioned snowbirds, and I wanted to respond to multiple posts. We have several nearby neighbors - most older than us - who spend several months in Florida (one couple goes to AZ). One or two couples own homes in FL but others rent for a few months each year. They drive down so they have a vehicle while they're away. One neighbor stays two months, while the others are usually there from early January through April.

DH and I are homebodies and have no desire to live elsewhere, even for a month or two. We usually take a late January-early February cruise that lets us escape Michigan winter for a week or two. Fourteen days is about our away-from-home limit as we both begin to long for the comforts of home :)

He likely meant the 19/20 calendar school year which would mean the remained of the school year until summer break begins.

They are also anticipating an internet overload based on the number of students e-learning while school buildings are closed.

When is summer break over there? Here it starts mid-July (a coupla weeks earlier, I think, in Scotland).

(CNN) — A transatlantic cruise ship carrying more than 600 passengers with at least five confirmed coronavirus cases on board is frantically searching for somewhere to dock after it was refused entry at multiple Caribbean ports.
British officials have launched an intense diplomatic effort to find a country willing to take the the MS Braemar, which belongs to the British company Fred Olsen Cruise Lines. Twenty passengers and another 20 crew members, including a doctor, are in isolation after displaying influenza-like symptoms while traveling on the the ship.

The Braemar is anchored about 25 miles offshore in the Bahamas waiting for clearance from the local government to bring aboard vital food, fuel and medications and two doctors and two nurses who are preparing to assist the onboard medical team.
The vessel, which is carrying 682 passengers and 381 crew members, arrived in the Bahamas on Saturday. Authorities there were the latest to prevent it from docking but was given permission to drop anchor southwest of Freeport.
"No other Caribbean ports were willing to accept the ship because of local sensitivities towards COVID-19 coronavirus," the company said in a statement.

Why aren’t we warned every flu season about disinfecting our mail? Flu virus lives quite a while on surfaces too, right? I doubt enough cells would survive the friction in the mail to be a problem, but that’s just MOO.
I'm sure surface transmission is pretty low-risk (but not zero) for both flu and for CV. And there would be less flu if people disinfected their mail!

But flu is ubiquitous now and people don't think so much about trying to trace back the source when they get it.

And of course for flu we have vaccines as well as immunity built up over time.

That's smart. I haven't done that yet, but should. LOL, I feel like we all need ante chambers for decontamination for us and what we bring home.

Most of my stocking-up purchases went straight into a cupboard or the root cellar etc and will not likely be touched for weeks or months, so I'm not worried about the virus surviving on packaging that long. I would only worry about something that sits out on the counter where it can be touched repeatedly. Or, ironically, the packages of things like tissue boxes or hand sanitizer bottles, which definitely ARE going to be touched repeatedly.

Maybe a separate thread where we can pay our respects and light a virtual candle? How would that sound?

Lovely idea.

@Tricia @JerseyGirl could we have a thread dedicated to the virus victims, please? News reports are starting to come out with names and pictures (which could run into thousands) and it would be good to have somewhere to list them together.

EDIT: as someone else suggested, maybe in the basement. Families might be shocked to stumble upon posts about their loved ones on a crime forum.

The death toll from the virus in France has risen to 120 which is up from 91 yesterday- Sky News U.K

Thank you for your replies about what we do about posting information about those who have tragically lost their lives. I agree a separate memorial thread would be the most appropriate. Hopefully @Tricia or another moderator will allow this.

What a nightmare. And in the event that someone requires hospitalization, they're doomed.

Washington (CNN)The nation's top infectious disease expert on Sunday did not rule out supporting a temporary national lockdown of the country's restaurants and bars in order to curb the spread of coronavirus,

Anthony Fauci doesn't rule out supporting temporary national lockdown to combat coronavirus - CNNPolitics
If that’s the case, then shut down everything! Lockdown all employment, all postal services, grocery and drug stores, Everything! Do not single out an industry that has not been proven to have spread anything. How about shutting down travel? That seems to be the only unifying fact in the spread between states. This makes me angry, and distrustful of Fauci .

MOO

Most schools are in session from mid to late August through mid to late May. Schools in northern states generally don't start until late August or after Labor Day (first Monday in September) and are in session until mid June. Private and parochial schools can set their own calendars. Public schools adhere to state, local, and/or district calendar mandates.

Pubs in Ireland are asked to CLOSE until the end of March putting St Patrick's Day celebrations in jeopardy as second person in the country dies from coronavirus and number of confirmed cases rises to 169

Pubs in Ireland are asked to CLOSE until the end of March | Daily Mail Online

I think few people will be in the mood for celebrating right now. This is the right thing to do in my opinion and I wish Scotland and the United Kingdom would do the same. I know it is devastating for pub owners but it is necessary.

Good! At least people are thinking to stock up on pet food, just in case.

just did my chewy order. Husband is going back to the grocery on Tuesday but he didn’t even peek in the dog food aisle so I don’t know the local status of that. So just In case.

A post from a young person on FB, one of my son's besties.

For real people. We got this
You can play at home. You can workout at home. You can eat, drink and be merry. At. Home. Don’t be selfish - yes, you could get it and survive it but what about alllll the people who can’t. Don’t make our healthcare workers decide who lives and who dies.

Lots of discussion this evening with my Dad about his upcoming visit (that likely won’t happen) and about quarantining the over-70s. I feel so bad for him - his church service this morning was the last one for the foreseeable future, as the congregation is all 70+. His macular (my Dad is registered blind) activities have been cancelled. The Blind Veterans events he attends, they are all postponed. He really wants to be able to maintain his independence by being able to at least stroll to the shops to buy his own groceries, but right now because our government is only drip-feeding information, we don’t know if that will be possible during the social isolation. I’ve offered to make him a Grandpaw (so called because my cats are his grandcats) room of his own here at home, however he doesn’t want to leave his own home for four months and although he didn’t say as much, I think he still feels safer in Cornwall than in London.
Right now, we’ve agreed to review things late next week. If he is quarantined, we’ll talk twice a day and (I haven’t told him this yet) I’ll keep him supplied with audiobooks.
If someone had told me just three weeks ago that I would be posting on here about a conversation like this, I’d likely have rolled my eyes and backed away fast. I do not like any aspect of this. Not one bit.

Hi everyone. I hope you are all coping as well as you can under the circumstances.

I have a question about what we do about posting the deaths of people. Do we post any stories with photos and information of those who have tragically died of this virus? Is it going to be too distressing and overwhelming for all us to see that information constantly when we come here? I totally understand if it is.

It is very sadly going to be very difficult to keep up with the number of deaths as the toll keeps rising in our various countries. I just wondered what your thoughts are on this. I don’t want to cause anyone anymore additional distress as I know we are all worried sick.
Maybe in a support thread in the basement?

Some Drs are now recommending schools be closed for the rest of the year.....

I can't see how that is going to work at all.

Too many families can't possibly provide the kind of childcare that school provides or the free lunches. :(
