Maybe a thread where people can check in so we know that they are well?

Awesome idea - and I was thinking that a thread for isolation planning and resources might also be handy for some???

How often, daily, hourly. Is the Queen included.

As often as they are regularly interacting with people and not isolating. MOO.
AFAIK, the Queen is isolating.

I hear you. I’ve struggled from the beginning to fully get my head around this too. But what it comes down to for me is looking at our fellow humans who have (and still are) suffering this virus before us. We learn much from them. I look at Wuhan, at South Korea, at Italy. It is hard to deny the information and images coming out of those afflicted cities and countries. America is not so special that we should expect anything different if we do not take action.

Every time I start to go back to “it’s just the flu” I’m reminded of what has happened overseas. There is undeniably something different about this virus. It is bringing countries to their knees because of rapidity of spread (over short time frame), and overload of medial capacity to care for the serious cases.

MOO.

i think this virus has split people into two groups--so in a sense
it is polarizing-- one group is composed of those who are young
and because they are younger, a !ot of them dont fear this virus
because for most of them it is not life threatening and many of them
will not even have symptoms.

The second group is comprised of elderly people with medical conditions
that leave them a target for a vicious attack. the virus goes right for the lungs
ultimately causing pneumonia and fatal respiratory distress--

I heard an expert describe this virus as a perfect killer of the elderly.

For those who are not that kind of target they dont understand what al! the fuss
is about

The numbers alone indeed DO support the shutdowns. People aren’t understanding.

We have to stop looking at just the death rates. The influx of hospitalizations is more than our healthcare systems can cope with when this thing takes off. And then the death rate increases to up to 6% or so because people can’t be treated. They’re being left to die for want of medical equipment and personnel.
Simply put, there aren't enough hospital beds, there aren't enough ventilators and there won't be enough staff to care for patients if this virus gets out of control. We NEED to control the spread. We currently have around 100,000 ventilators in service in the USA. Of those ventilators, about 80% are in use. We do have a number of ventilators in emergency surplus. But if we don't control the spread, it won't be enough.
'We’ll take them all': Demand for ventilators spikes as coronavirus looms
On Friday, the Society of Critical Care Medicine released a new report highlighting the scarcity of available medical resources in the U.S., including ventilators. The report cited the latest available data, including from a 2009 survey of hospitals, indicating that hospitals could use both existing machines and pull older devices from storage, as well as the 8,900 sitting in emergency stockpiles. Combined, the organization estimated hospitals could get their hands on roughly 200,000 devices, but that the number of available medical staff able to operate them at any one time would lower that number significantly. With some worse-case estimates showing more than 900,000 people could need ventilators, according to the American Hospital Association, the report raises concerns about a shortfall in both machines and the people to operate them.

Because he's the head of the government and has been around several people who have been infected.
Yes, he was around at least two people who were infected yet he was not infected. Our health dept. doctor said at a news conference yesterday that it was because he wasn't close enough to them for a long enough period of time--she said at least 10 minutes--for Trump to be infected. She made these comments in response to a person in Nebraska who was infected prior to boarding a flight in New York. She said the airlines/health dept. will NOT contact everyone on the flight but would instead contact those sitting within two rows of the patient.

It's very calm here in Northern Germany. My best friend is an intesive care nurse and they don't have any Corona patients in hospital here yet.

Nr. 1 topic here at the moment is Trump trying to buy CureVac to get a vaccine exclusively for the USA, everyone is disgusted by this move but not surprised.

If Germany is such a socialist hellhole why does the great America need to poach our researchers?

Sorry never heard such a thing, daughter went to Paris/by train to Munich and loved it. Yes our family is about half german so maybe I am bias.

Stuffing! My big weakness. I need stuffing now.
Just cooked a turkey breast with stuffing, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut and green beans. Not my normal meal but it smells soooo good. Turkey breast was all I could find ( the very last one!) when I shopped late a few nights ago. No chicken, no beef, no ground turkey, no nuffin.
Only the two of us so will last for awhile.
Really feel for everyone who has many mouths to feed and entertain in the coming weeks.
I do feel the panic will subside, cooler heads will prevail, and we will adopt a new rhythm as far as shopping for food and necessities.
This is a huge crisis but we we will come out on the other side of it.
Praying for those who are most vulnerable, though.

Multiple cruise ships are left stranded as coronavirus cases increase

MS Braemar
Status: Stranded in the Bahamas
A cruise ship with at least five confirmed coronavirus cases is frantically searching for a place to dock after it was refused several ports of entry in the Caribbean.
Four passengers and one crew member aboard the MS Braemar tested positive for the virus, according to a statement from British company Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, which owns the Braemar.
Twenty passengers and another 20 crew members, including a doctor, are now in isolation after displaying influenza-like symptoms while traveling on the ship, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines said on Sunday.
The Braemar is anchored about 25 miles offshore in the Bahamas. It's waiting for clearance from the local government to bring aboard food, fuel and medications, as well as two doctors and two nurses who will help the onboard medical team.
The United Kingdom is in discussions with authorities in Cuba and the US to find a suitable port for the Braemar, according to British government sources familiar with the efforts. Cuba is looking like the more likely option.

Silver Shadow
Status: Docked in Brazil, passengers in isolation
A Canadian passenger tested positive for coronavirus
A Canadian passenger tested positive for coronavirus Saturday on the Silver Shadow, which is docked off the Port of Recife in Brazil, according to Brazil's state news agency Agencia Brasil.
Royal Caribbean confirmed the case on the Silver Shadow on Sunday.
"Two guests aboard the Silver Shadow have been medically disembarked in Recife, Brazil, and one has tested positive for COVID-19," Royal Caribbean said in a statement.
The ship's 609 passengers have been in isolation since Thursday when a passenger showed symptoms similar to coronavirus, Agencia Brasil said on Friday.
One of the passengers who disembarked, a 78-year-old man from Canada, had a fever, cough and difficulty breathing. He was sent to a private hospital in the city.

Silver Explorer
Status: Docked in Chile, one passenger tested positive
The Silver Explorer docked in Castro, Chile, on Saturday after a passenger tested positive for coronavirus, Chile's Health Minister Jaime Manalich said during a press conference in Santiago Saturday.
An 83-year-old British man is in "good condition" and being treated at the Coyhaique hospital after testing positive, Manalich said. Royal Caribbean, which owns the Silver Explorer, confirmed the coronavirus case on Sunday.
"One guest aboard the Silver Explorer has been medically disembarked in Castro, Chile, also testing positive for the virus," the statement said.
The cruise ship is carrying 111 passengers and 120 crew members, according to Chilean officials.

Golden Princess
Status: Cleared to set sail for Australia
While no one has tested positive for coronavirus on the Golden Princess anchored off New Zealand, at least three passengers have been quarantined by the ship's doctor, according to local health officials.
One passenger developed symptoms similar to coronavirus and was being treated as a suspected case, according to the Canterbury District Health Board. Two other passengers had contact with a confirmed case in the past two weeks.
The ship is anchored in Akaroa Harbour near Christchurch so there could be "precautionary health testing" of guests who traveled on an international flight from Los Angeles, Princess Cruises said in a statement to CNN. The flight had a passenger who later tested positive for coronavirus in Australia. The cruise line said the airline passenger who tested positive has never been on board its ship.
The passenger with respiratory symptoms tested negative for coronavirus, Princess Cruises told CNN on Sunday. The Golden Princess was cleared to leave and set sail for Australia.
"We have also apologized to guests that this means that the remainder of their New Zealand itinerary has been canceled," the cruise liner said in a statement to CNN.
Passengers have not been allowed to disembark the ship. The Golden Princess departed Melbourne on March 10 for a 13-day voyage, Princess Cruises said.

Norwegian Jewel
Status: Stranded in the South Pacific Ocean, no cases reported
The Norwegian Jewel is searching for a port in the Pacific Ocean after being denied permission to dock at two previously scheduled ports, Norwegian Cruise Line said.
The ship is at sea in the South Pacific Ocean off the coast of Suva, Fiji, as of Sunday evening.
The cruise was scheduled to disembark in Papeete, French Polynesia on Saturday, but the port was canceled, the company said. Another scheduled port of Lautoka, Fiji, on March 17 was also canceled.
"We are actively working to find an alternative port and are communicating with guests regularly as we have further information," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement.
CNN is not aware of any reports of coronavirus cases on board the Norwegian Jewel.

Cruises to disembark
The Celebrity Eclipse is anchored in San Antonio, Chile. Celebrity Cruises is working with government officials to provide a controlled disembarkation plan to make sure guests have a way to leave the country, a spokesperson said.
The Azamara Pursuit, which is off the coast of Chile, is working on a plan to disembark passengers and get them home safely, an Azamara spokeswoman told CNN. The ship left Ushuaia, Argentina, on March 8, carrying 675 passengers and 389 crew members, Chile's Health Minister Jaime Manalich said Saturday.

Elderly Georgia couple quarantined separately after contracting coronavirus on the Diamond Princess say spending almost three weeks apart was worse than their mild pneumonia and flu-like symptoms

Dale and Sherry Grizzle were parted for nearly three weeks due to the coronavirus outbreak on the cruise ship in Japan and they've said the distance between them was the worst part about being stricken with the illness.

Diamond Princess couple reunited after separate coronavirus quarantines say symptoms weren't so bad | Daily Mail Online

I am so glad they survived and that they have been reunited.

Me too!

I saw them both on Fox this morning.

They are like my hubby, and me who has never been apart in 36 years of a wonderful marriage. When I was hospitalized for 8 days over a week ago my hubby stayed with me even at night.

I'm so happy for they survived and now are back together again.

Bless them both.

If that’s the case, then shut down everything! Lockdown all employment, all postal services, grocery and drug stores, Everything! Do not single out an industry that has not been proven to have spread anything. How about shutting down travel? That seems to be the only unifying fact in the spread between states. This makes me angry, and distrustful of Fauci .

MOO
Why so angry? Restaurants and bars are places where people congregate. People handle menus, which are then handed out to other customers without being cleaned. People touch their faces, lick their fingers, share food and utensils, etc. etc. Of course the virus is going to be spread in restaurants and bars. Italy shut down everything except food stores and pharmacies. But they did it late, when hospitals were already overwhelmed.
I’ll be interested to see if there is a spike in cases of younger people in Chicago and other cities that allowed bar crawls yesterday. Of course what has happened at O’hare will overshadow that by far.

I’ve found the virtual candle is depressing when it burns down and dies, repeating the glow of life of my loved one dying over again. Please make it a separate thread from all others so I don’t need to scroll and roll.

MOO

MOO but quite the ironic post considering how discouraging most of your posts are. I do not like to put posters on ignore (my problem only). I respectfully suggest you maybe focus on sharing your personal feelings -- we will all understand anyone being scared, confused, discouraged, worried -- rather than dismissive and belittling? IMO MOO PLEASE

I agree he is only the messenger, but why target restaurants and pubs, or in fact any service industry? This is what makes me leary of his message? Why not shutdown all business, why just shut down certain business. Is he anti restaurants and pubs. Have there been reported cases of coronavirus in these places. I ventured our in my community today, after staying home for a few days. I can tell you, communities and their friendly businesses are helpful for the mental state. I can read this forum for only so long, and read the recommendations of so called leaders before I rebel. There is a life, to be lived responsibly, outside. Peace

MOO

Why restaurants and pubs? Because that's where people gather in groups for extended lengths of time, close contact, food and drink going into vulnerable mouths, for not-necessary-to-life-in-the-short-term reasons etc.

Most people don't socialize for long durations in close proximity at the hardware store or drugstore or dentist office... I imagine other businesses with similar attributes -- theaters, clubs, etc -- will also be closed.

Will they issue guns with bullets to just end it all? I am really wondering why the street people have succeeded in not contracting the virus. When I was in SF last fall, the defication , urination and needles was apparent. We heard the street cleaners in the morning washing away the stench,

MOO
Not in my neck of the woods. Everyone here has their own guns and bullets.

Or who are in high risk categories due to existing health conditions. The last part is a little vague.

The link isn’t to the actual story. Can someone find it?
