“Stocks were unsteady on Tuesday, as Wall Street attempted a rebound from its sharpest drop since the outbreak of the coronavirus while investors waited for lawmakers to act to protect the economy from a recession that may have already begun.

The early gains faded quickly, with the S&P 500 slipping back into negative territory soon after trading began. Stock benchmarks in Europe were mostly lower on Tuesday.

The S&P 500 had fallen 12 percent on Monday, in what was also its biggest decline since the stock market crash of 1987.

Financial markets have been reeling as investors sharply ratchet down their expectations for the economy and look to the White House and Congress to help businesses and workers threatened by efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

IMO. If you look at the numbers in Italy, and Europe, the numbers in China make no sense. I think our Govt. Knows that. Hence the higher numbers for us.

Below is a link to the best explanation I've seen for learning how to make sense of the numbers. It describes how to use the data such as number of new cases, number of days it takes to double new cases, number of days to double deaths, what exponential curves look like and why they are so difficult for us to comprehend.

that's not what Gov. said.
He said bars, nightclubs and restaurants can NOT Sell alcohol for consumption on the property.
They don't have to close. He even said if they want to sell it for curbside consumption, that's OK.
But he was so nervous making this statement and he may have minced his words that he actually had to make a decision, so we'll see.
1/2 hour before he announced this Orlando Mayor announced it also with closing of bars, etc.
St. Paddy's Day usually has all the downtown
streets packed wall to wall with drunks so we'll see.
He also squirmed and welched again on the decision of spring breakers on the beach.
I'll let you know how well it's enforced about the booze.

69 new cases of coronavirus confirmed in Ireland

THE DEPARTMENT OF Health has said this evening that there are 69 new confirmed cases of Covid-19.

It brings the total number of cases here to 292.

The HPSC said this evening that it has been informed of 69 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.

• 29 male, 40 female
• 48 are associated with the east of the country, 13 are associated with the south, 5 are associated with the north/west, and 3 are associated with the west

There have been 2 deaths associated with COVID-19 in Ireland.

The HSE said it is now working rapidly to identify any contacts the patients may have had, to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread.

Pleased to see both cases and deaths appear to have reached a plateau in the last few days. Keeping everything crossed for dear Italy that this hell is over for them soon.

Banks are in business to make money. Imo, it's only worth it if they aren't compounding extra interest at the tail end if the loan. Otherwise, this is just a way for them to profit.

If during an outbreak the number of deaths is in fact doubling and this doubling time stays constant, then the outbreak is spreading exponentially.

Under exponential growth 500 deaths grow to more than 1 million deaths after 11 doubling times. And after 10 more doubling times it would be 1 billion deaths.

This is in no way a prediction for the number of deaths we should expect; it is a reminder that exponential growth leads to very large numbers very quickly, even when starting from a low base.

It is important to be reminded of the nature of exponential growth because most of us do not grasp exponential growth intuitively. Psychologists find that humans tend to think in linear growth processes (1, 2, 3, 4) even when this is not appropriately describing the reality in front of our eyes. This bias – to “linearize exponential functions when assessing them intuitively” – is referred to as exponential growth bias.

Psychological research also shows that “neither special instructions about the nature of exponential growth nor daily experience with growth processes” improved the failure to grasp exponential growth processes.

After the mail delivery person leaves,

• pump my hands,
• open the envelopes, toss them in a bag in recycling box,
• then pump my hands again and bring the contents from the envelopes into the house.

I really like my mail delivery person - but he touches every mailbox, door knob, etc. with his gloves.

This may not be high on the list of preventative measures, but I do this as a precaution. Only takes a few seconds and perhaps I'm keeping the virus out of my house. Maybe even just keeping the cold virus away.

Just my opinion (and my weird way of opening the mail!)

Apologies for replying to my own post. Someone asked about opening Amazon packages.

I have done the (above) procedure for months. Even if it just prevents the cold virus, I highly recommend this for any delivery from outside, whether it is everyday postal delivery or parcels.

In addition, I pump my hands after I use the delivery person's electronic pen, but I'm sure everyone does that.

In my opinion, it definitely belongs in the "preventative" list.
