We are deeply saddened that faculty member Professor Stephen Schwartz passed away due to a COVID-19 infection. He has left a lasting imprint on our department, our university, and the broader scientific community and will be greatly missed.
*( it's getting crazier, spreading like wild fire.

Opinion - Go in the morning. You may also find some store items at that time of the morning that you need or want..............moo
My local grocery store (Publix) told me that the morning was the worst time to go in their store because people were waiting for the doors to open and then it was a zoo while everyone tried to find one thing: TP. I went later in the morning (10:30ish) and there were people in the store but it wasn't crowded and everyone was calm. YMMV

Set my elderly neighbours up with a 24 of tp, a bag of milk, 2 x mini hand
Sanitizers, and a container of lysol wipes.
Told them I go out shopping only once a week, but if they were to make a list and phone me on Friday, I'd gladly pick anything up for them, if it's in stock.

Then headed to town to grab some more cash from the instateller,
and the bank had a health warning notice on the entrance doors,
Ie if you're coughing, fever, etc.

Yes, because obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure are all risk factors. All three have increased among Americans under 30 over the last 20 years. Asthma has also increased (with New Mexico leading the states in this rise).

We also tend to over treat people with antibiotics and secondary infections are part of the profile of how CoVId19 strikes people down.

Still, no matter how the data is sliced and diced, this is not going to kill a lot of young people (flu is probably worse). But when it does hit a few compromised younger people, look for it to really hit SM and hence, the young. Will they stay home even then?
A healthy 8 month old was diagnosed with Coronavirus this morning, and no the majority won’t stay home IMO. MOO

Younger people in France and Italy are falling seriously ill from coronavirus, a worrying development that suggests young adults are more susceptible to becoming sick than earlier thought, a White House official said. For live updates: Coronavirus | Reuters Reuters on Twitter
Maybe they have a longer incubation time???

Doctors tell patients to delay cancer treatment in case they catch coronavirus in hospital

Doctors have been told by NHS England to prepare for a ‘disruption of services’ in cancer units over the next few weeks due to staff sickness and shortages of drugs and equipment. They have been advised to group their patients into ‘priority levels’ according to how crucial or effective the treatment is likely to be.

Anyone whose chemotherapy or radiotherapy is expected to save their life – rather than just extend it or reduce symptoms – should be a priority one or two. Patients needing emergency surgery will also be in these top two categories.

But those whose chemotherapy or radiotherapy is being used to extend their lives or just reduce symptoms should be put in a priority level of four to six. Patients needing surgery but who can wait ten to 12 weeks with ‘no predicted negative outcome’ should be priority three.

They are below the emergency surgery cases but above those whose chemotherapy or radiotherapy is only extending their lives.

I feel so sorry for all the patients who are affected by this.

I had surgery and treatments for breast cancer last year. Am now in what they call active monitoring and “survivorship” care. I was scheduled for a follow-up mammogram and appointment with breast surgeon next week. The hospital called today to cancel the appointment as our city is mostly shutdown.

Our school is shut down, all classes moved to online and we are all working at home until the first part of April at least. I went to the store this morning when they opened at 6:00 and there was a line to get in. No meat, no bread, no eggs, no TP. I was able to get fruit and frozen juice which is what I went there for in the first place. My mom told me last night that one of my brothers who is a disabled veteran went to their Kroger and there were two loaves of bread left. Another old man was looking at it too and commented only two loves left, and my brother said yes, one for you and one for me. I'm really proud of how my parents raised me as we all would have done the same thing. Some in my local neighborhood store would have grabbed both loaves and knocked me down to get out of the store.
How great for the two men to share - but if anyone who is out of bread has an oven and a freezer, the frozen bread dough and dinner rolls are wonderful, and so easy to let rise and bake. If anything, the "wack'em" biscuits in the tube will do for SOS, creamed eggs, creamed tuna, jam, peanut butter, just about anything.

NJ Day cares are staying open, will get additional state support, Murphy says

Gov. Phil Murphy said Wednesday the state is taking extra steps to fund day cares and keep them open in New Jersey, even though schools have been closed because of the coronavirus outbreak.
Day cares are staying open, will get additional state support, Murphy says
The measures announced Wednesday include waiving some co-payments for those who qualify for child care subsidies and giving extra money to subsidy-eligible day care centers that remain open in the state.

Anyone want to guess how many hours before Gov. Phil Murphy says something different? I give him less than 2 days.

I watched that documentary last night. And what is sad, it was spread then by youth who had to go and fight in the Great War. Now it is being spread by youth who think it is their God given right to have a good time!

Earlier today, from my deck I saw a very large group of about 15 young people (college age) congregated in front of a high end restaurant, clearly not waiting for take-out. They finally walked off down the street in a strung out group with no social distancing. We are not a spring break destination, but our local university is shut down with online learning only, so they may be stragglers who haven’t gone home yet. This is why I’m staying home!

When I was in Costco yesterday, there was a guy behind me in checking out had two girls around nine years of age in the grocery cart. I figured he thought it was better to corral them that way than have to keep track of how close they were getting to people. Children that age can not legally be left alone at home or in the car, so what was he supposed to do with them otherwise? With restricted grocery store hours, it is making it even harder for couples to shop for their families, and I can't even guess how single parents are managing.

I agree. I went out today and the only people that got near me were children at the Dollar General. One rubbed against me. I thought to myself, how hard to explain this to little ones.
Gotta say I'm done with the young-people bashing.

They are acting no more foolish and self-indulgent than prior generations. Many carry a LOT of anxiety, and no small sense of betrayal about what we, the elders, have allowed to happen to the planet and to the institutions our own elders built.

It's our job to keep teaching them why we need them to comply (hard to do when we are judging), and it's our job to say, "Thank you. I know it's hard to give up a chunk of your youth for the common good."

Thank you a million times for this post. I have two sons, 25 and 22. Very engaged, fine young men. They are angry. Especially at our government.

They are more worried about me than anything. As I worry about them.

I have a question and it sounds crazy. There are no reported cases of COVID in my city. I phoned in a prescription refill to Walmart this morning, not because I need it now, but because I figured it is safer to pick up before we have the virus locally. Got a text that it is now ready for pick up. So, my question is, should I go in to pick it up tomorrow morning at 9 when the pharmacy opens or this evening? It is 4:13 p.m. here. Sorry for asking ; I am just not thinking logically on my own.

Now.

Neighbors of my older relative in very rural Alaska, who has trouble every winter with walking pneumonia, have offered exactly the same to her, so she doesn't have to drive on the bad roads 30 mile RT to town and rub elbows with everyone at the box store. I don't have anyone to offer that help to, but I'm looking around.

I think a parent should call the pediatrician first to determine not just the correct dose but also when to give it.

JMO
As far as I know from my friends with children, they are able to take care of minor illnesses such as a fever, and know how much and how often they need to give paracetamol, without asking a pediatrician. They also know when to seek medical advice, often from the nurses at the child healthcare centres.

Still waiting to hear why Trump turned down the WHO (World Health Organization) Corona Virus test packets, about 2 months ago. WHO supplied a multitude of tests for South Korea and 49 other countries, but Trump turned it down. SK tested thousands of people a day, and kept the curve down to avoid complete catastrophe on their health system.

Yet in the USA we turn down the same tests?

U.S. Lags in Coronavirus Testing After Slow Response to Outbreak

Coronavirus cases have dropped sharply in South Korea. What’s the secret to its success?
"Behind its success so far has been the most expansive and well-organized testing program in the world, combined with extensive efforts to isolate infected people and trace and quarantine their contacts. South Korea has tested more than 270,000 people, which amounts to more than 5200 tests per million inhabitants—more than any other country except tiny Bahrain, according to the Worldometer website. The United States has so far carried out 74 tests per 1 million inhabitants, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show."
South Korea’s experience shows that “diagnostic capacity at scale is key to epidemic control,” says Raina MacIntyre, an emerging infectious disease scholar at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. “Contact tracing is also very influential in epidemic control, as is case isolation,” she says."
I'm behind, this might have already been posted, but apparently this story was false. WHO gives the tests to less developed countries.

I am waiting for all commercial air travel in the United States to be shut down, Amtrak, and Greyhound, and any other public transportation provider.

The issue is that TSA workers are covered by a union, same as pilots, flight attendants, Amtrak workers, and flight controllers.

We will probably see this by Friday.

BBM. Why would union membership be an issue?

Election will be in November - cannot be cancelled. Constitution mandated. Even martial law cannot cancel it.
Nor will it need to be cancelled.
