Colorado food pantry supplies diminish as thousands of job losses create influx of need
March 19, 2020 at 9:26 a.m.

“As Colorado’s economy grinds to a halt and thousands lose their jobs, the network of nonprofits dedicated to feeding the state’s most needy are losing crucial sources of food even as need increases.

Many food banks and pantries in Colorado rely in part on donated goods from grocery stores and restaurants. But those sources are starting to dry up as restaurants are forced to shutter to prevent spread of the coronavirus and grocery stores’ shelves become increasingly bare.

“They don’t have anything to give us,” said Lynne Telford, CEO of Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado.“

WASHINGTON.....IMO....NEED MORE

In King County, we now have the potential for rapid, widespread #COVID19 infection.
Already, our community is coming together to support one another despite the challenges.
Until at least March 31, we all must take urgent action to minimize the health impacts of #coronavirus.

@KCPubHealth issued a health order to limit the amount of face-to-face interaction, including a prohibition on all events with 50 or more people and health requirements to hold smaller gatherings.

Restaurants may not offer dine-in services, but may remain open for drive-thru, take-out and delivery services.

Many social and recreational services must temporarily close, including all bars, dance clubs, fitness and health clubs, movie theaters, and nightclubs.

All other retail — including grocery stores and pharmacies — should and may remain open provided they observe #COVID19 prevention measures.

Guard activations expected to rapidly increase, could be used for law enforcement

“The National Guard is expecting a rapid increase in unit activations over the next few weeks, leaders said at the Pentagon Thursday, filling roles like coronavirus testing and potentially law enforcement.

Governors in 27 states have already activated elements of their National Guard forces, but everywhere in the country, state leaders have declared states of emergency, said Air Force Gen. Joseph L. Lengyel, chief of the National Guard Bureau.”

[...]

“One capability that would be lost if the the Guard is federalized is their capacity to operate as law enforcement to assist state officials, Lengyel said, as that would violate the Posse Comitatus Act. That law prevents the Department of Defense from interfering in domestic policing.”

“The Defense Department has placed hundreds of medical personnel on alert and ordered the deployment of two hospital ships to help public health agencies shore up their capacity as the coronavirus pandemic threatens to overwhelm community hospitals.

In addition to sending the USNS Mercy and Comfort to pandemic hotspots, active duty troops could help staff up to 1,000 beds’ worth of field hospitals around the country, the Joint Staff surgeon told reporters Wednesday, in response to requests from civilian public health agencies.”

[...]

“Meanwhile, the Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia-based Comfort will be pulled out of its current maintenance period to head up to New York, while the San Diego-based Mercy’s destination hasn’t been determined, Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman told reporters.

“Our understanding is that the ships will be used to take non-coronavirus patients which, is what our staff is best organized to do,” Friedrichs said.”

[...]

“Thousands of National Guard troops have been activated across more than a dozen states in the past week, though not necessarily medical units, and tasked with running mobile testing centers and compiling care packages to deliver to vulnerable residents, for example.

[...]

“Any field hospitals set by up military units have a similar capability.

“These are all designed for combat casualty care, for taking care of deployed units,” Friedrichs said.”

Paperwork.

“I have directed the FDA to eliminate rules and bureaucracy so work can proceed rapidly, quickly and fast,” he said. "We have to remove every barrier.”

Trump announces FDA making anti-malaria drug available 'almost immediately' to tackle coronavirus

Jmo covering their butts.

Well, FDA wouldn't approve something unless clinical trails are concluded. As of now clinical trials are still ongoing.
There are possible serious side effects of chloroquine, for example hypoglycemia in persons with diabetes, and risk of severe heart rhythm changes in patients with heart problems, so it's not a drug for everyone. Also, our chief public health officer said she was very disappointed in the liquor store line up yesterday (no social distancing, not 6 ft apart) and pointed out that with the population on PEI and the mortality rate, we could possibly be looking at 3000 deaths.

"I'm asking Islanders to have understanding, respect the self-isolation, respect the social distancing," said Morrison, adding that the province is trying to prevent the situation occurring in Italy and other parts of the world.
"If we look at what we know about this coronavirus and the mortality rate, if that were to happen on P.E.I. there would be 3,000 deaths," she said.

Yeah, my granddaughter is an RN in ICU in a large hospital in the city close to us. She is feeling overwhelmed. Just goes home to rest. I pray for her constantly.

Re my gran with dementia. It seems there is still no plans in place for how on earth she will self isolate. My aunt is a teacher and schools are closing for probably 6 months from tomorrow. I'm hoping my aunt takes her in.....(but it's not sounding like that at the moment....But I have put the idea out there)

“To date, 49 service members across all four Defense Department branches have tested positive for COVID-19, according to data released Wednesday. Of those, seven have made a fully recovery and just three are hospitalized.

Troops make up more than half of DoD’s affiliated cases, according to the data, with 14 civilians, 19 dependents and seven contractors also infected. Though none have so far recovered, 11 are hospitalized while the rest are in self-isolation at home.”

Up to 5 million N95 breathing masks and 2,000 ventilators are coming out of military stockpiles to support requests by the Health and Human Services Department, Defense Secretary Mark Esper announced Tuesday.”

“DoD also has 14 labs around the world now set up to analyze coronavirus tests, he added.

Though New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has called on the Pentagon to tap the Army Corps of Engineers to build hospitals to accommodate a surge in intensive care patients.”

[...]

“So far 18 states have activated their own National Guard units to help with getting supplies to their residents, mobile testing centers and other support, but Pentagon leaders have warned of the consequences of widespread activation, particularly of medical units that are generally manned by troops who work in health care in their civilian careers.”

These people are way past the age to know there are consequences to actions. The Governor should have shut it down a week ago.

JMO

It's inaccurate imo to say that the 18 - 24 year-old age group knows there are consequences to their actions.

It's well documented that the human brain is not finished developing until age 25. The last thing to be acquired is the ability to 'peek around corners' ie predict the consequences of one's actions.

There is a mix-up for many imo where in the 'eyes of the law', an 18 year-old is and will be treated as an adult. They should know not to take things that don't belong to them for example. When it comes to non-criminal behavior though, someone under 25 can't see much beyond the current day/evening.

If young people are to be prevented from congregating in groups of 10 or more, it will pretty much have to be legislated for them. Jmo.

I used to take it and have a bottle on hand that I’m allowed to restart at any time.

That is fantastic. It is a glimmer of hope anyways.
