Guard activations expected to rapidly increase, could be used for law enforcement
1 hour ago

Members of the Florida National Guard gather with local hospital staff during their response to the COVID-19 virus, March 17, 2020. (Sgt. Leia Tascarini/U.S. Army)

“The National Guard is expecting a rapid increase in unit activations over the next few weeks, leaders said at the Pentagon Thursday, filling roles like coronavirus testing and potentially law enforcement.

Governors in 27 states have already activated elements of their National Guard forces, but everywhere in the country, state leaders have declared states of emergency, said Air Force Gen. Joseph L. Lengyel, chief of the National Guard Bureau.”

[...]

“One capability that would be lost if the the Guard is federalized is their capacity to operate as law enforcement to assist state officials, Lengyel said, as that would violate the Posse Comitatus Act. That law prevents the Department of Defense from interfering in domestic policing.”

“ ...and potentially law enforcement.” I don’t know how to bold that part.

so many articles and from what I gathered is 1000$ is the base for everyone except millionaires.

I don't expect we'll see any money from those folks in DC. They're talking about it to boost morale and the stock market. JMO.

So am I understanding that the feds will still not assist states with masks and ventilators? Something about not being a shipping clerk? That's what I heard in the press conference. I hope this changes.
According to what he said in today’s press conference, the states are responsible for this, but if needed the federal government will provide assistance. No link, heard it earlier.

Excellent piece about how Singapore have handled the virus - brilliantly, as you'd expect!

How Singapore stayed one step ahead of the virus

I don't think that anyone in the United States thought that it would get here. And if it did, it would be a few isolated cases.

We never worried about SARS. And it never came here. Singapore was on top of SARS, so it makes sense that they were ready.

It's inaccurate imo to say that the 18 - 24 year-old age group knows there are consequences to their actions.

It's well documented that the human brain is not finished developing until age 25. The last thing to be acquired is the ability to 'peek around corners' ie predict the consequences of one's actions.

There is a mix-up for many imo where in the 'eyes of the law', an 18 year-old is and will be treated as an adult. They should know not to take things that don't belong to them for example. When it comes to non-criminal behavior though, someone under 25 can't see much beyond the current day/evening.

If young people are to be prevented from congregating in groups of 10 or more, it will pretty much have to be legislated for them. Jmo.
Amen. I have twelve grandchildren between the ages of 15 and 30. Their brains don’t catch up to their bodies until at least age 25.

I will say this much, zero bailout for cruise lines. If the ship is registered with United States, okay.

But all of the cruise lines register their ships in other countries to evade United States laws and regulations. No cruise line bailouts.

My last haircut was 8 weeks ago yesterday, but I am going to wait until the end of the month to see my stylist. As long as I'm able to pull my hair into a little ponytail, I can live with it not being perfect.

While watching TV yesterday, I noticed a lot of commercials for Massage Envy and wondered, WTH? I'm sure business is slow, but I think people can live without regular massages during this major health crisis.
Seriously, Massage Envy? ITA. smh

US Forces-Korea says combat approach to COVID-19 is working
1 day ago

Hayden Hallman, 20th Public Affairs Detachment)

“Citing aggressive measures taken to minimize the spread of the COVID-19 virus, U.S. Forces-Korea, USFK, leadership lifted work restrictions Monday in the city of Cheonan — a place designated a virus hotspot just less than a week ago.”

[...]

“While the risk remains high for U.S. troops, family members and other Americans in South Korea, the number of new cases in hard-hit areas has declined over the past week, with cities like Daegu reporting fewer than 100 new cases a day on Sunday and Monday.

The reports prompted U.S. Garrison Daegu to tweet “WE ARE WINNING!””

USFK drafted a “COVID-19 Response #KILLTheVirus” playbook that instructed commanders on communication plans, travel restrictions, event cancellations, school closures, quarantines, work stoppages, training and recreation restrictions, health screenings, social distancing, house cleaning and more.

As of Monday, number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Korea was 8,236. The number of cases among U.S. personnel, military dependents and Defense Department civilian employees has remained at nine for nearly a week.

“We've approached it similarly to how we operate in combat. We apply speed and violence of action on contact. We apply analytical tools and predictive analysis, and provide daily update briefings to me and component commanders so we maintain shared situational awareness,” Army Gen. Robert Abrams, U.S. Forces-Korea commanding general said Friday during a briefing at the Pentagon.”

[...]

“U.S. Forces Korea has tested 145 Defense Department affiliated personnel, including active-duty, dependents, employees and contractors, Abrams added.”

[...]

““America — here is what we’ve learned in Korea. To #KILLtheVirus you will need to change behavior. Limit interactions, elbow bumps, go straight home, wash your hands. If sickly, leave quickly. If tested-quarantine. Its not panic its prudent. And u dont need a lifetime supply of TP,” he tweeted.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump gave broader audience to U.S. Forces-Korea’s #KilltheVirus hashtag, using it in a tweet about coordination between federal state and local officials.

U.S. Army Garrison Daegu couldn’t have been more delighted.“

What numbers are they using for how many in a family/Household? Income tax info? Social Security? The last census count? Those counts would all be different for my household.
Not much clarity yet. Many have no loss of income from this, anyone on SS will still get their normal check, afaik, some will continue working, etc. I did hear one statement perhaps during KY presser about considering direct payments towards delinquent rents, I assume towards subsidized housing. That info would be readily available online to the feds, imo. I looked for info on what I think I heard but found none.
There will be a big run on electronics once payments go out, imo. I also THINK anyone under eviction MUST use their check towards arrears or eviction will proceed. All moo

NJ - Tragic Family Story :

Coronavirus Ravages 7 Members of a Single Family, Killing 3

Quotes from article:

Grace Fusco — mother of 11, grandmother of 27 — would sit in the same pew at church each Sunday, surrounded by nearly a dozen members of her sprawling Italian-American family. Sunday dinners drew an even larger crowd to her home in central New Jersey.

Now, her close-knit clan is united anew by unspeakable grief: Mrs. Fusco, 73, died on Wednesday night after contracting the coronavirus — hours after her son died from the virus and five days after her daughter’s death, a relative said.

Four other children who contracted coronavirus remain hospitalized, three of them in critical condition, the relative, Roseann Paradiso Fodera, said.

Mrs. Fusco’s eldest child, Rita Fusco-Jackson, 55, of Freehold, N.J., died Friday; after her death, the family learned she had contracted the virus. Her eldest son, Carmine Fusco, of Bath, Pa., died on Wednesday, said Ms. Paradiso Fodera, the family’s lawyer who is Mrs. Fusco’s cousin and is serving as a spokeswoman.

Mrs. Fusco, of Freehold, died after spending Wednesday “gravely ill” and breathing with help from a ventilator, unaware that her two oldest children had died, Ms. Paradiso Fodera said.

Nearly 20 other relatives are quarantined at their homes, praying in isolated solitude, unable to mourn their deep collective loss together.

“If they’re not on a respirator, they’re quarantined,” Ms. Paradiso Fodera said.

It is so pitiful,” she added. “They can’t even mourn the way you would.”

BBM. I was informed yesterday that an older sister is being sent home to die from a lung tumor and brain cancer. It will happen within a week. I can't fly to her. And there most likely will not be a funeral because of social distancing. We might all do a video chat if she is well enough for it.

There is nothing like bad news to make you realise how lucky you are. No matter how sucky you think you have it.
