I have a new admiration for China....

Right now over 80 doctors at Hopkins and at hospitals in China just finished a meeting via videoconferencing. The doctors in China taught us from their recent experience. They finished by praying for us.

I bet his information is more credible than Bloomberg's twitter. He did jump the gun a bit, but he is trying to give us all glimmers of hope.

FDA testing coronavirus treatments, including chloroquine, plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients
FDA testing coronavirus treatments, including chloroquine, plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients – TechCrunch
Despite a claim early in Thursday’s White House briefing on the pandemic by President Donald Trump that one proposed treatment, anti-malarial chloroquine, had already been approved by the FDA for COVID-19 treatment, Hahn said that in fact the agency is currently looking at widespread clinical trials of the drug, but it is not yet approved for that use.

“In the short term, we’re looking at drugs that are already approved for other indications,” Dr. Hahn said. “Many Americans have read studies and heard media reports about this drug chloroquine, which is an anti-malarial drug. It’s already approved, as the president said, for the treatment of malaria [Trump had not said this, but had instead said it was now approved for COVID-19] as well as an arthritis condition. That’s a drug that the president has directed us to take a closer look at, as to whether an expanded use approach to that could be done to actually see if that benefits patients. And again, we want to do that in the setting of a clinical trial, a large pragmatic clinical trial to actually gather that information and answer the question that needs to be answered.”

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update: FDA Continues to Facilitate Development of Treatments
The FDA wants to assure the American public that the agency continues to work with partners across the U.S. government and regulated industry to expedite the development and availability of critical medical products to prevent and treat this novel virus, including repurposing existing therapies that may help treat patients with COVID-19.

“As is true for most medical situations, the great American innovators in academia and industry have engaged with us about treatment options. We are extremely encouraged by the interest and promise in the development of the COVID-19-related therapies. We understand and recognize the urgency with which we are all seeking prevention and treatment options for COVID-19. FDA staff are working expeditiously on that front” said FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn, M.D. “We also must ensure these products are effective; otherwise we risk treating patients with a product that might not work when they could have pursued other, more appropriate, treatments. At the same time, we will engage with domestic manufacturers to ramp up production of this product to mitigate any potential supply chain pressures. If clinical data suggests this product may be promising in treating COVID-19, we know there will be increased demand for it. We will take all steps to ensure chloroquine remains available for patients who take it to treat severe and life-threatening illnesses such as lupus.”

Wow maybe I lucked out because I've taken this drug Plaquenil for years for my RA. I take it everyday. I am so relieved to see in print that the increased demand for it won't make it unavailable to me. Last year there was a brief shortage and my mail pharmacy sent me less with no letter telling me so.

I do think the President should wait before talking about it as in this article, the drug has not been approved by the FDA for the novel coronavirus… yet.

Trump calls anti-malaria drug a ‘game-changer’ for coronavirus, but the FDA says it needs study

"It has long been approved to prevent and treat malaria as well as to treat arthritis, and doctors have authority to prescribe it now, but there is not enough evidence of definite efficacy against the coronavirus."

and

"The drug costs as little as 30 cents a pill at retail Canadian pharmacies, according to the website PharmacyChecker.com. In the United States, where drug prices typically are the highest in the world, the retail price is $6.63 per tablet, according to the website Drugs.com."

"The FDA said in a statement later Thursday that, with interest rising in chloroquine, which is already approved not only for malaria but also for lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, it is working with manufacturers to ramp up production to prevent shortages."

This is so difficult for most of our population, and some people are selfishly making it worse for others.

I’m here on Maui, where we will begin lock down tomorrow morning. We’ve already been encouraged the last week to not go out except For essentials,, but tomorrow it will be the law. I’ve noticed that our small local grocery stores have very few people, the non-tourist areas have very little traffic, and people are keeping their distance while shopping. Our schools are closed, our libraries are closed, even our county parks are closed.... the only thing open to residents is our county beaches. All of the local areas are very very quiet, everyone I know is at home, which tells me that our local residents are taking this seriously. (Yeah!)

BUT, our local government has NOT shut down restaurants, tourist targeted activity Businesses and nonessential retail, it’s been on a voluntary basis so some of our establishments have remained open. Why you may ask? the Almighty Tourist dollar.

Yesterday many local people commented that they had seen one of our shopping areas along the beach fully packed with people, two different restaurants had lines out the door, the whale watch boats were full, and many tourists packed on to the beach. (these are reports from local residents who have no choice but to go to work in essential jobs and observed all of this). There were demonstrations yesterday and today at the airport of local people wanting visitors to stop coming. Our governor put out a plea 2 days ago for vacationers to not come for 30 days.

Yet they continue to come. Yesterday we had 16 cases, today 26. All but two of the cases to my knowledge are tourists and not residents of our state. Being on an island, we have less resources than most places on the mainland... no trucks to deliver goods, limited medical supplies and hospital beds, and we STILL have people bringing their infections & viruses from all over the globe.

<modsnip>

My neighbor, (who probably won’t be having many hours soon because he works for a car rental company), told me when he was at work two days ago there were tourists that were bragging that they got such cheap tickets that they decided if they have to be stuck somewhere and/or quarantined, they’d rather do it here than where they’re from.

The local people are begging our government to establish a quarantine. I sent emails to our Mayor, our head of the department of transportation, & to the White House.

Are we angry? Yes

We rely on visitors and therefore we usually welcome them with open arms, but not at this time. It is not the time for vacations . Not only will our local businesses suffer from this epidemic, but it will decimate our tourist industry, yet stopping the flow of visitors to our islands is essential, Even if it cost us jobs... better to lose jobs than lives. We need to, like everywhere else, contain the spread, get our people and our economy healthy, and then we will welcome you all back here with open arms & Aloha.

please, if you know anyone that is planning to come visit please tell them DO NOT COME. We love you but we don’t want you here right now.

BTW, woke up this morning with a headache, stuffy nose and generally feeling not very well. Hoping it’s just allergies. My son is not feeling well, and he is an essential worker, LE. In the past week he’s had to fly inter Island twice for business, and has been to the emergency room for police business twice. Because of his high exposure, I can’t have contact with him or my grandkids. My daughter has lupus, I haven’t seen her for over a week. We left some food for her on her porch the other day, and thankfully she has a supportive husband. I live alone and I’m having to stay away from all of my family, which is pretty hard. But I’m preaching to the choir because many of you are in the same boat.

thanks for letting me rant, everyone stay healthy and sane, and as always....

TAIWAN....I THOUGHT THE SAME....

While most governments are asking people to stop panic buying, Taiwan's premier is taking a different approach: "Buy as much as possible, there's plenty of goods .. As the economy is slowing down, of course the government encourages everyone to enthusiastically buy" - REU

If each person with #coronavirus infects just two more people, the number of infected doubles with each step. 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, etc. This is why hospitals aren't inviting potentially infected patients into their facilities for testing. @11AliveNews #R0 Brendan Keefe on Twitter

I predict there will be insider trading investigations into all of them as well as into the purchases and sales of stocks by their "audiences." Stock transactions are very easy to trace.

I’m guessing investigations are underway!

We’re all very concerned, doing the right things, but if this goes on for 18 months as some predict, where will we be? Can we maintain this lifestyle?

@Betty P. I had a PT sales job with P & G for years, based out of my home. Every year they sent us a huge gift box with a sampling of their wonderful products. They should do a national mass mailing of gift boxes. They could send detergent, Snacks, toiletries, etc. Obviously they can afford to and they will profit from this pandemic, imo.
When I retired from the Navy, I became a sales rep for P&G!! I loved getting those Christmas boxes.

IMO....we ride the wave.....see the chart attached. As immunity takes hold, people will come back out, as the Chinese did across the country. Keep in mind, their journey is not over.....they will go into second wave before we do.

Is anyone in the world actually buying a Toyota at this time? Or any car for that matter?

If you’re staying home, are you doing anything to manage your anxiety about going out? I’m concerned I’m going to be completely agoraphobic by the time this whole thing is over.
I walked around my farm a few times today, very boring, but safe. I could not help but think “is this it, is this now my life, walking alone, afraid to venture out......”.
I need a diversion or a project, otherwise I’m obsessed with cleaning & washing my hands.
I’m most freaked when I see kids in public.

I have noticed on TV in the US that we are seeing many commercials, for items made in the USA, buy in the USA. Have others seen commercials in their country for their residents to buy their products?
