Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #32

But that's what a pandemic is (up until them, it was either endemic or epidemic). They can't change the meanings of those words just because.

Yes, we knew quite some time ago. I knew, because I read science news daily and because it's within my broader field of study. I was worried. We didn't know what the death rates would be - or even that it was going to be all old people (such a relief, really - compared to when it seemed possible that infants and babies and toddlers might be equally susceptible).

Each of us reacted differently and most of our institutions reacted not at all. "The world" doesn't watch all this news, there are still tons of people who have no clue this is happening, even right here in California. It's we who want be helpers or leaders who must still try to do something to mitigate this disaster.

Yes, 3,5 months would have made a huge difference. In one month, I think California and other well-funded, well-informed states will be getting a grasp on this - but no one knows if we are capable of stopping it before we become Italy. The methods we use to keep the death rate lower, here in the US, need study and it's worrying that we didn't plan for data gathering.

It is a global problem, but it is one that divides by its nature, as we all need to eliminate pathways for the virus by...less contact.

And it's okay to take a different attitude. Some of us want to fix things and feel compulsive about it, others want to chill and go on with life as before. That's the way it is.

Definitions are clear - pandemic is local transmission in 2 WHO regions. That happened long before a pandemic was declared. I posted links several times between when the criteria happened and it was declared a pandemic. In fact, many of us here were waiting for it.

We knew the mortality rates would be as least as bad as China, and it turns out that with defiant population groups, it's much worse.

The world had 3 months notice. 2 additional weeks would have made no difference. The wisdom was that everything should continue as normal and contain the infections as they cropped up in other countries. The thinking seems to be that China screwed up by not catching it in time, but everyone else could do better.

If people in other countries were capable of stopping virus pathways, they would self-isolate. That is the only thing that works so far.

Hey Everyone, I wanted to share something I’ve been doing all winter that I believe in.

I have had pneumonia 3 times in the past 6 years and the last time about killed me and I have no doubt next time might.

An older friend of mine in her late seventies fell and hit counter and punched a hole in her sinus cavity. She had surgery and then for several weeks after she had to use a Netti pot daily. After she healed she continued using Netti pot and says she hasn’t had a cold or flu or anything in several years.

So starting last winter I started using a Netti pot that uses essential oils in solution. I’m a firm and loyal believer of essential oils but that’s a different story for a different time! The product I use is Alkalol.

I haven’t had a cold or flu in the past 2 years but I do suffer from seasonal allergies and using this product has lessoned the severity of them. I have 5 acres that I mow and I used to get so stopped up and sneeze a hundred times while mowing and I still do somewhat still do that but not as bad.

Believe me I have been religiously “washing my nose” as I like to call it every day! Even if I don’t go anywhere. Every single day I boil tap water and use my Netti! I stopped believing long ago that water is purified or distilled and just boil water myself, plus it’s more comfortable to use warm water.

There are YouTube videos on how to use the Netti and it IS kinda difficult and uncomfortable at first but if you do it daily you’ll get the hang of the angle your head has to be and how to stand etc. I advise you to practice several times before adding essential oils to your pipe because you’ll waste a ton of water and product before you get the hang of it! I don’t put the eo’s in water and then put in pipe... i put the eo’s in the pipe and THEN fill pipe up with water.

I found my Alkalol in CVS in my town, my local Walgreens didn’t carry it but maybe some do!

Sorry for such a loooong post!!! Oh and I’ve started boiling my pipe for a minute after using it now.

Everyone wash your hands and stay safe!

Long time advocate of homemade saline washes! After months long severe sinus infections & long periods on various antibiotics and saying NO to what sounded like a barbaric surgery option by ENT doc!
Old school modification of ‘water pic’ at the time & saved by alkalol many times. Much progress in newer Neti pots and redi-made packets to dissolve makes it easier.
Highly recommend

Coronavirus infections keep going up in Japan

Japan has reported 39 more infections with the new coronavirus, bringing the total to 1,054 as of midnight Sunday.

The figure, provided by the health ministry and local governments, includes 14 cases confirmed among people who returned from China's Hubei Province on chartered flights.

They have been flattening the curve. They were one of the first countries to have infected people, and their numbers are lower than other countries that had a later start. They need to close borders except supply chain.

That's not cool. Everyone in Canada needs their health care workers where they are. Out of country health professionals are on probation until they qualify in Canada, and they are needed where they are. What is Ontario thinking?

This isn't about putting together a crisis team for one city or region. Everyone is going to get hit.

It's OK - they are targeting local (Ontario) part time workers to work more hours, inactive members and those that have retired to come back. I saw an interview with a nurse who was 70 and volunteered to come back and help out where she could.

Respectfully disagree.....there will be areas that are not blasted at the same time ....its important to be flexible with resources and move them around.

Glad I am not making the decision to not support ventilation for someone who is struggling to breathe.

True, but imagine you're looking at a 27 year old and an 81 year old who need the same medical equipment to survive, and there isn't enough equipment to go around. Those decisions were made in China and are being made in Italy.

I agree. It seems confusing to people in the United States, that the President is leaving a lot of decisions to local government, governors are making decisions regarding what needs to be done in their state.

But it makes a lot of sense. Montana is completely different from California, or New York.

Thank you! That sounds much more normal than a broad casting for health care workers to go to Ontario.

Astoundingly similar...hope the numbers won't be.

With limited resources that seems like a good strategy, for Canada as a whole.
