Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #32

With limited resources that seems like a good strategy, for Canada as a whole.

BC and Ontario had cases first, before other provinces. They are at the same point of the epidemic in Canada. Alberta first, Saskatchewan and Manitoba next, were a week or so behind. Now even the NWT has cases. Pulling health care workers from part of the country to put out a fire in another part of the country would be like asking Washington state to send their health care professionals to New York.

That wouldn't make a lot of sense in a pandemic.

Is the volunteerism expected to be sustainable (financially)? Enough to protect our health care workers? Are we going to help these companies so that we aren't just counting on their charity to get the job done? People are reusing equipment right now. Health care workers are getting sick.
The way I understand it, the companies are 'volunteering' to produce the needed supplies---but NOT for free.

They are volunteering to ramp up production as opposed to being forced to do so by executive order---but they will be paid for their products.

NEW YORK

At the Pentagon this afternoon, the commanding general of the Army Corps of Engineers laid out in detail how it'll be involved in rapidly expanding bed space for COVID-19 patients in places like New York City.
Bottom line: It includes hotels, dorms, even conference centers.
1/
Lt. Gen. Todd T. Semonite, standing alongside other senior Army officials, said state governments will nominate facilities to be used, FEMA will approve them and then funding will flow from there.
2/
“This is an unbelievably complicated problem, and there is no way we are going to be able to do this with a complicated solution,” the general said of the existing lack of bed space. “We need something super simple. So, our concept is a standard design.”
3/
The design will include nurse’s stations in hallways, and require the installation of standard equipment that creates zero-pressure rooms to contain germs. It has been approved by HHS, and briefed to White House officials, he said. 4/
Major sense of urgency conveyed clearly. Semonite met with @NYGovCuomo this week, and said he needed him to immediately begin identifying facilities to convert.
5/
“He said, ‘How fast do you need them?’ And I said, ‘I need one tonight. I need three by tomorrow night,’” Semonite said. “So, we actually got turned on by the governor. We got money from FEMA to go into two buildings on Tuesday night.”
6/
A head-turning aspect to this is facilities they're looking at, like the massive @javitscenter in Manhattan.
Also, @SUNY dormitories, Semonite said.
Today, Army Corps engineers walked through hotels and other open-space buildings.
7/
"The bottom line is, we've got to something very, very quick," Semonite said. "Most of the governors are saying that their peak is somewhere around the middle of April. So, this is not take all of the time in the world to do it."
8/
The Corps of Engineers can't do this everywhere, the general said. Doesn't have the capacity. It's relying on the federal government to prioritize cities.
The intent is that other cities can replicate the plan.

WASHINGTON

Thank you to the vast majority of Washingtonians who are responding to COVID-19 responsibly.
A reminder:
➡️ Stay home unless absolutely necessary
➡️ Keep 6 feet away from everyone at all times
➡️ Wash your hands often
➡️ Call your loved ones and tell them to do the same

I heard a few people gathered in large groups this weekend.
A reminder: you are endangering yourself, your loved ones and the vast majority of Washingtonians who are responding responsibly.
It is reckless, and must stop.

BREAKING: NHS England agrees deal with independent hospitals to provide 8,000 extra hospital beds across England, nearly 1200 more ventilators, more than 10,000 nurses, over 700 doctors and over 8,000 other clinical staff to fight #Coronavirus and #COVID19.

In London it includes
over 2000 hospital beds, and over 250 operating theatres and critical beds.

MORE: Private hospitals will reallocate practically their entire national hospital capacity in one go to the NHS.
IMPORTANT: No profit will be made on this (i.e. it's at cost) and the spending of public funds will be verified by external auditors.

Our Farmer's inurance agent called to tell me that the $570.00 we pay per month to them, for our small restaurant of less then 10 employees, does NOT cover viruses. Or, a loss of income due to a virus.
Isn't that great?
I had not contacted them. This call came completely out of the blue to me.
I think I've spoken to my insurance agent twice in 15 years.
Those times being while we were surrounded by fire.
Reporting from. Southern California. Kali.
I am very seriously considering not paying them next month.
All commercial landlords require that you have this insurance.
But, I do not see us being able to pay our landlord the $5,200.00 per month that they want monthly from us.
We've had zero communication from our landlord, which is a very large corporation.
We could just close, and leave?
I don't know, I feel like we're all of a sudden in survival mode.
Our credit is excellent right now.
How long before it's destroyed?

A third LAPD officer tests positive for the coronavirus

A third Los Angeles police officer has tested positive for the coronavirus and was exhibiting symptoms inside an LAPD station for several days this week, according to law enforcement officials who spoke to The Times on Saturday on condition of anonymity.

The officer, who had recently returned from a vacation out of the country, was “coughing and sweating” during roll call in Central Division, which patrols areas that include downtown L.A., two of the officials said.

Despite protests from several officers in the station, the affected officer was allowed to work for at least two days this week, according to the officials. It was not immediately clear if the officer went out on calls or otherwise interacted with the public.

ADMIN NOTE:

Politicizing is not allowed at Websleuths period, let alone in this thread when a global crisis is happening and members and guests are concerned about their own health and that of their loved ones.

Members want to know what to do about the virus, they want to know where the hot spots are; they want to know what to expect, what is coming, what the scientists and medical professional have to tell them to keep them safe, etc. They do not give a big rat's butt about the political side. It does nothing to help them and is not productive in any way. You want to discuss politics of this crisis, take it to private messaging or find a political forum. Websleuths is absolutely not the place for politics.

Just STOP once and for all with the political posts. Not only is it against The Rules (aka TOS) but this is Tricia's site, Tricia's rules. You wouldn't go into someone else's house and break the house rules. I fail to understand how any member can know the rules that are in place here, and just set about violating those rules.

Tricia has asked, Mods/Admins have asked. We have asked politely many times, we have removed posts providing the reason as politicizing, we have not assigned Warning points, and we have assigned Warning points but it continues. We do NOT like having to sound this harsh, but it seems some folks only get it when it gets to this point.

If your post serves no other purpose than to complain about or trash POTUS or government or local officials, or to pit present day against 10 - 20 years past, or just generally complain about politics or politicians, don't post it. Your post will be removed and a permanent thread reply ban will be issued. You will be able to read but not post.

Victoria seems set to follow NSW's footsteps and introduce a statewide shutdown.

In a statement, Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed he would proceed with a shutdown of all non-essential activity over 48 hours.

All schools will be shut from Tuesday, following news that 67 new coronavirus cases had been confirmed overnight.

Thank you for the updates! My son is so thankful to be home - he was scared into it on Tuesday - just after sports events were cancelled. He thinks he was just under wire with everyone else figuring it out, so his flight was the following morning. He now thinks that he was sick in Melbourne. There was no testing to get on the plane in Melbourne, but there there was an empty seat between all passengers.

Coronavirus Italy: Victims over 80 may not get intensive care | Daily Mail Online
  • Officials warn it may be impossible to treat every virus patient in intensive care
  • Plans drawn up in Turin propose that criteria 'must include age of less than 80'
  • Doctors have described making life-or-death decisions over who will be treated
  • Prime minister Giuseppe Conte warned that 'we have not yet reached the peak'
  • Coronavirus symptoms: what are they and should you see a doctor?
I think that is a click-bait headline and Italy's health care professionals will continue to use multiple factors in decisions just as they do every day in ICUs around the world. I've seen several stories of very elderly people in the U.S. successfully recovering from Covid-19.

I don't either. I think it is also going to worsen already contentious child custody battles. Parents will be fighting about parenting time.

If you are leaving the country and taking your virus with you, no one is going to stop you.

If you are leaving the country and taking your virus with you, no one is going to stop you.

I figured that out today. Even though on March 18, Canada declared that no Canadians could get on an international flight to Canada with a cough or symptoms of the virus, on March 19 Australia only asked each passenger how they felt. The passengers naturally answered that they felt fine because they want to go home.

No country wants to deal with more sick people than they already have, so they're happy to send them home - at least they put them on a plane with one empty seat between all passengers to minimize contagion. There might have been healthy people on the plane.

SEATTLE — Target Corp. has apologized for selling face masks in Seattle stores while hospitals face a dire shortage.

...Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said his office intervened when it received reports Saturday that the much-needed N95 masks were on Target shelves.

Target said on Twitter that the masks were being sold in error ....and that it was removing them from shelves and donating them to the Washington Department of Health. The company said it would also search its inventory for additional masks to donate.

"sold in error".....Humm..

File this under stuff I never considered.

Cousin is very active in her church. Services cancelled, including Easter. Very concerned about lack of donations to keep church afloat. Churches could very well fold. It just keeps going, doesn’t it?
