Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said on Sunday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus, becoming the first senator to announce they had contracted the disease.

“Senator Rand Paul has tested positive for COVID-19. He is feeling fine and is in quarantine. He is asymptomatic and was tested out of an abundance of caution due to his extensive travel and events,” Paul tweeted.

Just heard that on CNN. It was followed by discussion of whether or not everyone in Congress should/would be tested. I hope not. Doesn't seem fair that regular citizens can only be tested if they have specific symptoms.
A lot of regular citizens can't even get tested if they do have symptoms.

Where exactly are you going to get such a mask, that is the question.

Yes. There have been medical professionals encouraging mask use for the public, but no direction on where to get said mask. This is from the Grant County Washington Health Department:

March 21, 2020 – 4:00pm
We are seeing a rise in cases of COVID-19 in our communities. Test kits are limited and not everyone who has COVID-19 will be tested. The virus is not limited to those who have positive results or symptoms. Yet people with the virus and no symptoms unknowingly pass the virus to others. At this time, you should use all precautions to protect yourself and others. There is community spread within Grant County and you may have contact with people who are ill every time you go out into public places such as the grocery or other stores and the doctor’s office. Do whatever you would do if you knew someone with COVID-19 was in the public places you are, because it is out there. Stay home as much as you can. If you do need to go out, stay 6 feet away from people when possible, wear a mask, and wash your hands as soon as you get home

A third of virus cases may be ‘silent carriers’, classified data suggests

"The number of “silent carriers” – people who are infected by
the new coronavirus
but show delayed or no symptoms – could be as high as one-third of those who test positive, according to classified Chinese government data seen by the South China Morning Post.
That could further complicate the strategies being used by countries to contain the virus, which has infected
more than 280,000 people and killed nearly 13,000 globally"

ICELAND

Iceland currently has the highest per capita coronavirus infection rate in the world. But that’s not a bad thing. Because of its small population it is testing everybody, revealing a lot about the virus. Eg, half of all carriers exhibit no symptoms at all. Everyone In Iceland Can Get Tested For The Coronavirus. Here's How The Results Could Help All Of Us.
Liz Sly on Twitter

From the article:

The testing has provided evidence revealing that a significant portion of those who catch the disease do so with no or mild symptoms — and confirmed multiple pieces of research that have shown that asymptomatic individuals contribute to the transmission of the disease in great numbers.

In the small northern Italian town of Vo, one of the communities where the outbreak first emerged, the entire population of 3,300 people was tested — 3% of residents tested positive, and of these, the majority had no symptoms, researchers said.

The population was tested again after a two-week lockdown and isolation. Researchers found that transmission was reduced by 90% and all those still positive were without symptoms and could remain quarantined.

A lot of regular citizens can't even get tested if they do have symptoms.

I noticed that, during the WH press conference yesterday, VP Pence had no symptoms, yet both he and his wife were tested because his staffer was positive for COVID19.

Would a test even be needed? And if "Negative", that is sort of wasteful, because he had no symptoms at all. According to their own guidelines, he should be in quarantine for 2 weeks.

KANSAS

TOPEKA — Health officials have ordered Kansas City-area residents to stay at home for 30 days, starting Tuesday, in an effort to slow the rapid spread of COVID-19.

The order affects all but essential services for residents in Johnson and Wyandotte counties, as well as Jackson County on the Missouri side.

The area is a hotbed for confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including the only two deaths from the illness so far in Kansas. At least 55 people in Kansas have tested positive for the virus, including 38 in Johnson and Wyandotte counties.

“If we don’t act, the virus can spread very easily,” said Allen Greiner, chief medical officer for the Kansas City, Kan., unified government. “Sometimes people who have the virus don’t know it. If you are close to someone like this, they can infect you and many others. This is why we must follow the public health order for everyone to stay at home.”

Government, infrastructure, child care, health care, grocery stores, pharmacies and food services will be allowed to continue during the home quarantine period, which is in effect until at least April 23.

Health officials tracking ascent of the coronavirus in Kansas said confirmed cases in the state were insufficient to issue orders mirroring instructions in California, New York and other states to mostly confine people indoors.

Ridiculous that they won't test him.. I hope he feels better soon.

I think they don’t test too many, because there might still be a limit on the amount of test kits. One lady whose 15-year old had the fever and dry cough (and I bet the whole family had it already, but they are young) wanted to test her kid. They had to fill in a lot of forms and finally were told someone would call them. No one did the moment we spoke over the phone.

Wondering, I work for a small company - ethically and morally, should we be given the option of staying at home?

Yes, I believe you should. I appreciate though, that it’s not always practical. Would your role allow you to work from home?
I’m part of a small company - as in an already cut-to-the-bone number of staff. Because I’m so far away from the office, I WFH as a matter of course - however as of Tuesday last week, the IT team had set up everyone possible with everything they need to work from home.
