“Cuomo, at his daily coronavirus briefing on Sunday, said he saw people gathered in large groups and playing recreational sports during a tour of public places in the city on Saturday. He and other officials have been instructing people to stay home or, if they do venture outside, to keep at least six feet away from others.

“It’s insensitive, it’s arrogant, it’s self-destructive, it’s disrespectful to other people and it has to stop and it has to stop now,” he said. “This is not a joke and I am not kidding.”

[...]

“He added that the Police Department and other agencies will also "go out and remind people, educate them, break up groups of people if they’re congregating.

A spokesperson for de Blasio, Jane Meyer, said in a written response to Cuomo's remarks: "The City has already banned team sports and revoked all permits for large gatherings and has increased the presence of NYPD and Parks Enforcement Patrol officers to enforce social distancing. We are evaluating these efforts and considering expanded restrictions. The Mayor and the Governor have already discussed these efforts and we will continue to coordinate with the State. We urge every New Yorker to heed these new restrictions immediately."

“On another front, Cuomo announced on Sunday that the state is instructing hospitals to come up with plans to increase capacity by a minimum of 50 percent to prepare for a coming surge of coronavirus-related hospitalizations. Hospitals will also be required to halt all elective noncritical surgeries starting Wednesday.

Cuomo said that during his Saturday outing he approved potential locations for the Army Corps of Engineers to assemble temporary hospitals — SUNY’s Stony Brook and Old Westbury campuses, the Westchester Convention Center and the Javits Center in Manhattan. Those locations, however, do not come with staff or supplies. Under Cuomo's plan, another federal agency, FEMA, would set up four field hospitals in the Javits Center, each with a capacity of 250 medical beds. They would include staff and supplies.

“We’re ready to go as soon as the federal government is ready to go,” he said of those projects.”

Yeah this is Wuhan all over again times infinity...:(

Remember when they had the bodies piled up in the waiting room right there in the same room with all the loads of people waiting to get care? :(

Remember those long lines around buildings and crowded hospitals?

I’m recalling from a PC moo that the US ships will house non infected CV patients, is this right? Going for links on The Comfort and The Mercy.

Ugh gjr. :(

“Cuomo offered some good news, saying Port Authority Director Rick Cotton recovered from coronavirus without hospitalization and tested negative for the virus after two weeks of quarantine.

BBM:

“He also offered what he called “personal advice," saying that New Yorkers should focus on controlling the things they can, such as mentally preparing for the emotional toll of time at home or physical isolation. Everyone’s lives will be very different for four, six or nine months at least, he said, and people should be prepared for adjustments.”

SD-Based Navy Hospital Ship to Aid Non-Coronavirus Patients in Los Angeles

“A San Diego-based Navy hospital ship is going to Los Angeles to provide extra support amid the area's surge of coronavirus patients, President Trump said Sunday.

"The Department of Defense has been given direction to dispatch it to Los Angeles immediately. DOD has advised Mercy can get into position within a week or less of today’s order,” FEMA Administrator Peter Gaynor said.

USNS Mercy -- one of the Navy's two 1,000-bed hospital ships -- will depart from Naval Station San Diego on March 23, the U.S. Navy said. Over 800 Navy medical personnel and support staff, and more than 70 civil service mariners will be aboard the ship.

[...]

"The ship will serve as a referral hospital for non-COVID-19 patients currently admitted to shore-based hospitals, and will provide a full spectrum of medical care to include critical and urgent care for adults," the Navy said.

The additional support will allow local health professionals to focus on treating COVID-19 patients and for shore-based hospitals to use their Intensive Care Units and ventilators for those patients, according to the Navy.

[...]

“Even though there are more cases right now in Washington, the projected need for beds in California is five times more that of Washington," Gaynor added.””

Also according to the Navy:

• Mercy’s primary mission is to provide an acute surgical medical facility to the U.S. military to support expeditionary warfare

• Its secondary mission is to provide full hospital services to support U.S. disaster relief and humanitarian operations worldwide

“And with 1,000 beds, 12 fully equipped operating rooms and up to 1,200 doctors, nurses and medical specialists, the white converted supertanker emblazoned with giant red crosses will be a sight for sore eyes.

The Comfort — which is undergoing maintenance in its home port of Norfolk, Virginia – is expected to treat non-coronavirus patients, relieving the immense pressure on the city’s hospitals during the mounting crisis.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said the ship was likely to arrive by mid-April.

The roughly 70,000-ton Comfort was originally a San Clemente-class oil tanker before it was converted into a hospital ship in 1987.

At almost 900 feet long and 106 feet at its widest point, the ship can reach speeds of up to 17.5 knots – over 20 mph – with its impressive array of medical equipment and services, including digital radiology, medical and optometry labs, a pharmacy, a CAT scanner and two oxygen-producing plants, according to the US Navy.”

Navy hospital ship won't be ready to help New York for weeks, Pentagon says
WED, MAR 18 2020

  • “The USNS Comfort and its West Coast twin, the USNS Mercy, are nearly three football fields long and 10 stories high, making them indisputably the largest hospital ships in the world.

[...]

“”With regard to the Mercy, the Mercy will be prepared and ready to go much sooner, it has had a warning order to get ready for the last few days, so they are hopefully going to be able to go in days, not weeks,” Hoffman said.

The vessels, which were transformed from hulking oil tankers into 1,000-bed hospital ships, are equipped with 12 operating rooms, a blood bank, a medical laboratory, a pharmacy, an optometry lab and a CAT-scan.

Both ships have side ports to take on patients at sea as well as helicopter decks for air transport. The ships are so massive, each would be tantamount to the fourth-biggest hospital in the U.S.

“Right now, in New York specifically, the rate of the curve suggests that in 45 days we could have up to an input of people who need 110,000 beds; that compares to our current capacity of 53,000 beds,” Cuomo said Wednesday at a press conference in Albany.”

—-

“Two sources told USNI News that the idea was for the ships to provide relief for coastal hospital systems, with the ships taking on non-COVID-19 cases and allowing the hospitals to focus on the most critical patients suffering from the virus. The Pentagon also has extensive equipment for erecting field hospitals in addition to the hospital ships, but those facilities are optimized for trauma cases, with several beds close together, and not for infectious patients.”

[...]

“Each ship has a 1,000-bed capacity and is manned by military medical personnel, requiring about a week or more to mobilize those personnel from across the active duty and reserve forces. Pentagon officials have stressed that many of the reserve medical personnel that would be called up to staff mobile hospitals or Mercy and Comfort would be partially pulled from civilian medical facilities.”

Will 1,000-bed hospital ship sail for Seattle or Los Angeles?
March 20, 2020

“Gov. Jay Inslee on Thursday called for the ship to come to Seattle, among the hardest-hit areas of the country for COIVD-19.”

[...]

“The same day, California Gov. Gavin Newsom penned a letter to the White House requesting the ship to come to Los Angeles, saying it would “help decompress our current healthcare delivery system."

The hospital ship isn't ideal for quarantining those suffering from an infectious disease. Its benefit is having a moveable, large-scale trauma care ward that can help take the pressure of those acute cases off of area hospitals so they can focus on treating those afflicted with novel coronavirus, Burford said.

There's only one other hospital ship in the fleet, the Norfolk-based USNS Comfort. The White House said earlier this week it would go to New York.”
—-

“The U.S. Navy said Wednesday that despite the dispatch to areas affected by COVID-19, the ships will not treat patients who have fallen ill with the virus.

"The Comfort and Mercy will not deploy to treat COVID patients, but will be made available to assist with treatment of other patients in coastal locations where local health professionals are necessarily focused on a large number of COVID cases," the Navy said in a statement.”

““The president will dispatch it immediately,” Cuomo said, noting the ship will remain in New York City harbor.

Cuomo added that New York City is the "natural" place for the ship to dock, noting the "density" of the population.

"We must increase the current hospital capacity," he said.”

[...]

“Field hospitals and a fleet of hospital ships could be called in to help with overflow capacity of infected patients, he said.

The USNS Comfort was in port in Norfolk, Va. undergoing repairs after a six-month tour in South America and would not be ready to arrive in New York until "mid April" at the earliest. At this point, efforts are being made to expedite the timeline.”

NYC DOCTOR

The difference in the ER from last week to this week is stark.
Last Sunday: a few #COVIDー19 + patients mixed w/ the chest pains, abdominal pains, etc.
Today: overwhelming majority are #COVIDー19 suspected/confirmed. Very little of anything else.
This week will be tough.

Finally a small follow up from the Diamond Princess. In this subset of confirmed cases, 41% were asymptomatic at detection but that fell to 32% by the end of the observation period - so some went on to develop symptoms 1/2

A high fraction (27%) were severe, but the definition of severe was "clinical symptoms of pneumonia." Goes to show how context is so important to understanding epidemiology. https://t.co/BMXSGjBwpG
