I'm guessing that there has to be a little tiny amount of extra PPE that are in stock in areas that are not in the same situation as New York.

I understand that production is the only way to solve the problem long term, but way can't an even small amount of material be shipped to NY to help save even a few lives? JMO
Sure, and that's kind of you. But IMO, no one is interested in a rob Peter to pay Paul scenario. Not when Louisiana or California or Ohio or Washington is in trouble. Other states need what they have. New York will do what it can with what it has, and what is offered by the feds or anyone else.

Funny story, there is a local pizza restaurant, great people, I know that this virus is killing them. So, I go in tonight to pick up a few things. Everyone has gloves on, surgical masks, one employee is scrubbing down an already immaculate counter.

I asked them if I was ordering pizza, or getting surgery. :p

You initially said that the federal government "should" send supplies.

Now you're saying that they did send supplies.

Yes I'm confused.
That's not what I read, but I get confused sometimes, too.

No helping people in other states even if possible. 50 states in the union all looking out for themselves.

Not much of a union. This really makes me sad.

OK...nite all. Be safe. I rode my bike around the neighborhood for over an hour today and tuckered myself out.
That’s so sweet.... you deserve a like just for that. Now, get some well deserved rest .

I'm not following you here.

Is 3 weeks on a ventilator a maximum ? If so where does the 5 months come from?

Every hot spot needs ventilators for 4 months until a peak, if they can flatten the curve as effectively as China. If every person on a ventilator needs the ventilator for 20 days, then the hot spot needs ventilators for 4-5 months.

Hot spots in the next epicentre, the USA, could pop up every week or two. Should future hots spots deplete their supplies for the current hot spot?

India police are beating people with batons and forcing them to do exercises on the street when they break the law and go in public. India is expecting an enormous outbreak in May.

Yes I'm confused.
The discussion was concerning states sending supplies and medical teams to other states.
I said the federal government should be doing that. (Instead of using state resources).

Later I mentioned the federal gov sent 2k respirators to cuomo, and 2 k tomorrow of the 30k he needs.

I'm bowing out of this discussion, as I don't have a clue as to what you think I am saying that is controversial.

Why would they need the same number of ventilators for 4 to 5 months?

That's where I'm getting confused.

I think in many ways we are a great union - just look at the coalitions formed among states in the northeast to restrict the spread of the virus. But this is a novel situation. Just a few days ago, it seemed as though states like Iowa, Idaho, and Nevada would be relatively untouched, so one might think they could spare a bit. Now Idaho is in stay-at-home status. Hopefully, they will be able to limit spread better than NY. But they need their gear. As do the other states. So we need to increase production and distribute it in ways that are efficient and effective.

Probably for the best. I still don't get it.

Sometimes I wish we could do this in US. Maybe we wouldn't be having coronavirus parties.

India is just so big and populous, and so many without homes. This feels like trying to corral the wind...

What is a ventilator? The 'critical resource' that is in short supply
'Updated March 25, 2020, 3:04 PM EDT
By Elizabeth Chuck

The coronavirus is straining the global health care system, and one piece of lifesaving medical equipment is in particularly scarce supply: mechanical ventilators.

A ventilator helps patients who cannot properly breathe on their own by pumping air into their lungs through a tube that has been inserted into their windpipes. Because COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, affects the respiratory system, the number of hospitalized patients in need of breathing assistance has exploded since the pandemic began.'

"This is a disease that people are dying of because of respiratory illness. They're not dying because their heart fails. They're not dying of shock," Rizzo said. "They're dying because they just can't get oxygen to their bloodstream, and that makes other organs fail, as well."

''Ventilators are hospital bedside machines that assist with two critical functions: getting enough oxygen into the bloodstream and clearing out carbon dioxide, which can build up when the patient is too weak or sick to move air in and out of the lungs. The decision to hook a patient up to one is made when it is clear that the lungs have become too inflamed or injured to do those functions on their own and when steps that are less invasive, like an oxygen mask placed over a person's nose and mouth, fail to deliver what the patient needs.

"Through different types of settings, we're able to sync up with how the patient is breathing and assist them with extra pressure, extra volume, extra flow using that mechanical ventilator," Singer said.

''The time a patient stays on a ventilator can vary from days to weeks, experts said. At the Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans, coronavirus patients have typically been on ventilators for one or two weeks, said Dr. Joshua Denson, a pulmonary medicine and critical care physician.''

They can't help each other any more than Sweden or France can help Italy.

No...no virus is bad enough to sacrifice civil liberties that we have to safeguard every day, IMO.

That's where I'm getting confused.

Because tens of thousands of people are going to get sick before the peak.
