First homeless New Yorker, 60, dies of coronavirus as 39 people in shelters test positive in the city and the U.S. death toll tops 1,000

First homeless New Yorker, 60, dies of coronavirus | Daily Mail Online
I'm so very saddened to read this. I have thought from the beginning that the homeless were going to be much more vulnerable than most of the population and would die from Corona at a higher rate. Causation: jumbled and crowded conditions in shelters, lack of access to health care/testing, living on the streets in unhygienic and unsanitary situations, mental illnesses, and substance abuse keeping them from seeking medical advice. Praying that the awfulness in NYC would be a megaphone to other large cities to be proactive in seeking out and testing the homeless.

Hypothetical question (would love to hear your opinions on this): Someone at a long-term care facility is tested for COVID-19 and is quarantined for the appropriate 14-21 days. Do you all think that the facility should alert employees/residents that this has occurred? Should all employees/residents in contact with this person be quarantined as well? Interested in ethical, legal, and protocol reasoning.

Earlier on, several people posted that the Minnesota company, "My Pillow" should convert to making masks. Looks like they, along with other U.S. companies, have started to do so.

MyPillow, other US companies making face masks to meet coronavirus shortages

Replying to my own post to add for those that don't have time to read this article:

MyPillow will make masks for health care workers in Minnesota and other states

A New Jersey mattress company will make masks for health workers in New Jersey, the owner realized that one of the materials used in making face masks is also one of the materials used in making mattresses.

A New Jersey tablecloth company is also converting to making face masks.

An apron-making company in Los Angeles is also converting to making face masks.

The new coronavirus is finally slamming Russia. Is the country ready? | Science | AAAS
For weeks, Russia seemed to have dodged a bullet. As coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) raged just across the border in China, Russia was virtually untouched, reporting just seven confirmed infections as recently as 10 March. Since then, the number has risen fast: Russia has now reported 840 infections, about two-thirds of them in the Moscow region.

Some health care providers have questioned whether Russia truly kept the novel coronavirus at bay. Anastasia Vasilyeva, head of Russia’s Alliance of Doctors trade union, has pointed out that pneumonia cases in Moscow spiked in January—they were 37% higher than in January 2019, according to Rosstat, Russia’s statistics agency. She asserts that COVID-19 must have accounted for at least part of the increase. Others attribute the increase to a greater number of pneumonia patients, anxious about the new coronavirus, seeking treatment.

Amazon Workers Are Scared, Unprotected As Coronavirus Sweeps Through Warehouses | HuffPost
Earlier this week, workers at an Amazon warehouse in Staten Island, New York, were told an employee in the facility tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Then they went back to work.

[...]

... Company founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, the richest man on earth, has said he’ll do everything he can to keep his employees safe.

But workers don’t feel that way. “To watch Amazon executives say they are protecting workers is infuriating,” one New England driver told HuffPost, asking for anonymity to protect their job.

At least 10 Amazon warehouse workers have been diagnosed with COVID-19 as of Thursday, according to public reports. ...
