Jo-Ann craft stores are giving away free kits to make face masks, gowns

As of March 23, all 860 locations of the craft store are offering curbside pickup and home delivery of free kits to make masks, gowns and "other essential items" to be donated to American hospitals. All open stores are carrying face mask kits in adult and youth sizes, a spokesperson for Jo-Ann told Fox News, and the materials are replenished daily. In addition, Jo-Ann is offering its store classrooms, sewing machines and professional instruction for people to produce the personal protective equipment with the free supplies there. Social distancing guidelines will be followed during this effort, the company said in a statement.

I’m still amazed how many women in my area find it okay to gallivant from open store to open store with their children in tow. Some are old enough to stay home. Idk.....smh, do some moms not care they are willingly jeopardizing the health of their children? Jmo

Our local Joann's are allowing their employees to drop of supplies to ppl's front doors with no human contact. They will also pick up finished masks. My MIL is making masks at home

I can only speak for my hospital (So Cal) but at this time we are still allowing 1 visitor per patient in L&D.
Most women don't know the exact day / time they will deliver. If a significant other is tested, then it takes 2-5 days for results and the woman delivers prior to results or several days after the results, the test would not be valid.
Simply put, I don't know the answer.
I just know that hospitals are working hard to keep mother & baby safe during the birthing process. Unfortunately, sometimes that may involve unpopular but needed decisions.
Good to see you back here. I was getting worried.

Unfortunately, not all of them are, and none that are near me or my sewing friends are. It’s great that some stores are, though. A local, small wal-mart has twice donated fabric to our cause. The larger wal-mart and Joann said no.

According to restaurant workers, large corporate chains such as Applebee’s, IHOP and Denny’s haven’t stepped forward to deal with their workers’ situation. For example, based on a leaked recording, McDonald’s foughtagainst parts of Trump’s coronavirus bill that would give workers paid sick leave. “McDonald’s and the National Restaurant Association are leading the lobbying charge to prevent emergency paid sick leave,” Reyes said. (McDonald’s says it supports the bill but took issue with a financing mechanism within it.)

Thanks @JaneEyre Work has kept me pretty busy. I'm off today and tomorrow. I know I can't possibly catch up on the threads but I'm glad to see some familiar faces and hope everyone is well. :)

Found this interesting, one might even consider Wsers to be "canaries'' at times, imo, speculation. ..
Worried internet searches raised alarm of COVID-19 virus 10 days before laboratory testing, if anyone had looked
''A surge in internet searches and social media posts about coronavirus illness came more than a week before laboratory tests in China confirmed the outbreak, suggesting search engine traffic can predict virus hotspots long before patients hit the hospital.

Using the health questions concerned people are asking as a “canary in a coalmine,” monitoring search engine queries could have sounded a warning 10 days earlier in the cycle of the COVID-19 outbreak in China, researchers found.

“Predicting the development of the outbreak as early and as reliably as possible is critical for action to prevent its spread,” writes Cuilian Li, of Shantou University in Shantou, China, the study’s lead author.

“Internet surveillance data provided an accurate and timely prediction about the outbreak and progression of COVID-19.”

''In times past, miners would keep a nervous eye on caged canaries brought with them into a mine tunnel as an early warning of danger; deadly gases in the mine would kill the birds before the miners giving them a chance to scramble out.''

Not sure where this will land since I can't keep up with the threads.

I remember back to another devastating virus that caused panic in the US and through out the world - the polio virus. We could not play outside when the sun was up, not even on the sidewalk. I don't know why I remembered the sidewalk!

This article written 20 years ago is one example of why history should be so important to us.

'Sixty years ago, polio was one of the most feared diseases in the U.S.

As the weather warmed up each year, panic over polio intensified. Late summer was dubbed "polio season." Public swimming pools were shut down. Movie theaters urged patrons not to sit too close together to avoid spreading the disease. Insurance companies started selling polio insurance for newborns.

The fear was well grounded. By the 1950s, polio had become one of the most serious communicable diseases among children in the United States.

In 1952 alone, nearly 60,000 children were infected with the virus; thousands were paralyzed, and more than 3,000 died. Hospitals set up special units with iron lung machines to keep polio victims alive. Rich kids as well as poor were left paralyzed.

Then in 1955, the U.S. began widespread vaccinations. By 1979, the virus had been completely eliminated across the country.'

Michigan hospitals asked to open space for coronavirus patients as facilities reach capacity
Southeast Michigan hospitals overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients will begin shifting patients to other hospitals around the state, Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun said Thursday.

Speaking at the Michigan Capitol Thursday morning, Khaldun said Michigan is beginning implementation of a “load balancing plan” for hospitals, asking hospitals outside of Southeast Michigan to serve as relief hospitals and accept patients from other hospitals that are currently at or near capacity.

South Africa:
Summoning Churchillian authority, President Cyril Ramaphosa fired up the South African Police Force (SAPS), urging the men and women in blue to go out and enforce the nationwide lockdown with duty and service at the forefront of their agenda.

He called on SAPS officers to act with compassion and authority in a time of desperate uncertainty and fear.

“Our people are terrified,” he said. “They fear they will lose their jobs, that they won’t have enough food, that they will become sick, that they will become bored in their homes. You are expected as police officers of South Africa to have compassion and understanding to be able to give help and assistance. That is why you are called in service.

“This is the time for SAPS to provide a service to the people of South Africa. I call upon you from the bottom of my heart to have a notion of going out to save lives. If you know this, you will be supported. You must advise, guide and lead the way. That is what we expect.”

I totally agree with this.

Why can't a partner or support person be tested and allowed to be present, with appropriate PPE?

idk but my dad is dying right now in hospital and no one is allowed to be with him, not even my mom
