Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #37

Zipped out to Walgreens at lunch to get a few things including rocket fuel (Mountain Dew) was surprised they had TP and paper towels in stock so I grabbed one of each even though they were limiting 2 per customer.

Reading posts about digital entertainment, libraries and studying. It could be that I do a lot of silent film research online using digital archives that I tend to take that for granted.

I have been getting so many emails about supporting local business to get take out food. My heart is heavy that many places are struggling but I personally cant not take the chance of getting sick. Sad situation all around.

Gift certificates! Maybe can be all done online or over phone?

Hypothetical question (would love to hear your opinions on this): Someone at a long-term care facility is tested for COVID-19 and is quarantined for the appropriate 14-21 days. Do you all think that the facility should alert employees/residents that this has occurred? Should all employees/residents in contact with this person be quarantined as well? Interested in ethical, legal, and protocol reasoning.
Yes, all residents and employees should be alerted and quarantined. JMO IMO MOO

idk but my dad is dying right now in hospital and no one is allowed to be with him, not even my mom
Oh, my goodness. My worst fear. I’m so sorry.

I agree! Same premise as bringing reusable bags or a personal beverage cup in.

I think the coronavirus is also going to speed up cash no longer being accepted in stores as well. Stores are already refusing to accept cash as payment where I live in Scotland because of the virus. It’s not a big issue for me as I prefer using my cards for contactless payments for all my purchases under the £30 limit.

But I despise touching the keypad for putting my pin in on card purchases above £30 that needs addressing somehow.

Pittsburg, Pennsylvania

Kind gestures sustain during trying time.

Seeing all that has transpired the past couple of weeks reminds me of Pittsburgh's beloved celebrity, Mr. Rogers (most recently played by Tom Hanks, another beloved celebrity, who coincidentally, has contracted the virus).

Mr. Rogers was our ambassador of kindness and empathy. It was Mr. Rogers who famously said "when I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” He and his mother were right — Mom usually is.

Approaching the Baum Boulevard Aldi store on a recent Friday, I could see through the windows it was teeming with customers. Slightly panicked, I went to grab a shopping cart. Surprise! Someone had put a quarter in every cart, 20 of them.

Although shelves were mostly empty, someone put the last loaf of bread in an elderly lady’s cart, another let a father with two kids go to the front of the checkout line, which extended to the very back of the store. There were smiles and encouraging words exchanged.

I am convinced that this pandemic could pull the best out of all of us. Care, compassion and love will make us stronger rather than weaker.

If we all try to outdo each other, a new pandemic will explode. One of kindness, care and compassion that will sweep our beautiful and strong city.

My concern was the person doing the cooking at their food establishment. I cant be sure if they are healthy or not.

Pregnant women with coronavirus infection can pass it to their babies, study finds
A study of 33 pregnant women in China who were infected with the new coronavirus found that three of them gave birth to babies with COVID-19.

All three infants survived after receiving treatment for their symptoms, doctors reported Thursday in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics.

One of those infants was delivered by cesarean section nearly nine weeks before its due date because the mother was suffering from pneumonia caused by COVID-19. ...

I understand and agree. I probably won't make use of the gift certificates I bought for months, until this is over. But the restaurant gets the money now to help them stay afloat.

It's a risk in case the business doesn't survive, but I was willing to take that chance.

Me too. I had never used the Auto Checkout before and I couldnt believe what happened to me about 3 weeks ago at WM.

I only had a few items and I didnt have my gloves on that I normally wear when grocery shopping. I was trying to avoid all contact with people and devices and I did pretty good till I had to checkout.

I first started to go to an isle that had a checkout person and then decided it would be better to do Auto Checkout.

Well, I couldnt figure out how to swipe my darn Visa card through the machine because the silly instructions showed to swipe it through the swiper thing. Unbeknownst to me and no visual instrucdtions for it, there was another slot underneath the thing that takes the swipe. Anyway, as I am struggling and looking around for help, a nice attendant came over and before I could do much about it, she grabbed my card and swiped it for me. I was thankful I could get out of there, but also immediately knew my card had now been handled by another person. My no contact rules and trying to stay away from people were a **FAIL** right at the end as I was trying to leave.

It reminds me too that I once failed at the car when I had my gloves on and took them off before putting the packages in my car. Another FAIL right at the end. Even going into the house, I made some mistakes in handling the goods.

So wanted to share this tip. Be careful at ALL TIMES and especially right near the end of your shopping journeys if you do have to go out for supplies.
