But the pandemic itself also makes other things take much longer to set up. We have massive problems with supply chains, access to necessary products and ppe's, staffing, etc etc.

We can't snap our fingers and make all of these big things happen in the bureaucracy we rely upon.

That's one of the main reasons I am not a fan of BIG government. They are slow and burdensome.

We need strong local and state governments. IMO
The states also have the most power, and it’s up to them to make decisions that keep the population safe.

Governors and mayors, not the federal government, have the broadest quarantine and isolation authority, as the constitution leaves that kind of police power in the hands of the states.

Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has the authority to detain people suspected of having an infectious disease without getting approval from state and local officials, that authority is rarely used and experts on public health law say that any attempt to leverage that power to create a federally mandated quarantine would likely be challenged in court.

Well that's some scary ****........jmo
But we know that there has been problems with the accuracy of those tests.

Maybe it was faulty testing that created the impression that people were negative then suddenly positive?

Watch what they do, not what they say....all these CEOs pranced across the stage 2 weeks ago claiming they were going to do this......they are letting us down and this is a matter of life or death. All I can assume at this point is that it was a huge advertising event because they clearly have not followed through.

BRILLANT

"Imagine if we established quarantines BEFORE they became “hot spots” (read: people sick and dying).
Say... two weeks ago? Everywhere?"

This is ridiculous IMO. If you've been a long time smoker, your lungs are already not functioning as well as the lungs of a non smoker. That is why people with existing lung problems are more vulnerable to this disease and more likely to die. Banning people from buying cigarettes today will not help the spread of this illness as it takes months if not a couple of years for your lungs to have the same functioning as someone who has never smoked. JMO.

Maybe, but they probably have tested different people from different batches of test kits. At least I would like to think they did that. Jmo

My nephew works in Fairbranks. Company just shut down, and he was on way back to PA, but now he is staying with the skeleton crew.
Daughter lives near there. Works for essential employer and they are taking all precautions so diligently that they are using walkie-talkies to help distancing.

I thought so too, until I read this in the article:

Former smokers recover 30% of their lung function just two weeks after quitting.

“Any ex-smoker can tell you how, just days after quitting, they were noticeably less out of breath after walking up a flight of stairs. Personally, I have heard hundreds of these stories,” he writes in draft remarks.

L.A. County releases 1,700 inmates from jail early to prevent coronavirus outbreak behind bars – Daily Breeze

Los Angeles County’s jails are emptying fast as sheriff’s department officials try to limit the possibility of a disastrous outbreak of coronavirus behind bars.

For almost two weeks, Sheriff Alex Villanueva said he was looking for as many inmates as possible to safely release. On Tuesday, he said the number so far was 1,700 inmates, or about 10% of the county’s entire jail population.
...
He said he was still concerned about potentially bringing in an inmate with the virus undetected — to limit that from happening, he’s asked his own deputies and officers from municipal police agencies to make fewer arrests. Villanueva said he said he’s working with L.A. County’s Superior Court and the district attorney’s office to delay certain criminal proceedings.

Midland County, West Texas Report - We now have eleven cases of the Virus. The last two are early 20's unknown to each other, a male and female. The last four are "unknown as to how they caught it". The first seven were all traceable back to a 60 year old man, from Mississippi, who had traveled back into this area for work. He also is our only death from the Virus......Stay careful, folks...........moo

Dohhh! Doc T just said on Wednesday’s Presser “the time to act was one and two months ago” and “squandered that window of opportunity..”.(but there’s still hope)

Source / Wednesday Briefing;
Press briefings

—Re: “squandered that window of opportunity”, that’s exactly what I said quote unquote verbatim yesterday.

I really wish WHO provided transcripts for these Q and A portions.

Ten times the government was warned about lack of ventilators
Federal officials repeatedly warned that US hospitals lacked enough ventilators - CNN

In at least 10 government reports from 2003 to 2015, federal officials predicted the United States would experience a critical lack of ventilators and other lifesaving medical supplies if it faced a viral outbreak like the one currently sweeping the country.

<snip>

During global outbreaks of H1N1, SARS and MERS, Crosse said, "we dodged the bullet time and again."

"But the CDC has been well aware, HHS has been well aware, the intelligence community has been well aware" of the risk, she added. "Of course, nobody would know the specific details, we didn't know it would be a coronavirus from China, but the threat of a respiratory illness was known."

GovRonDeSantis decided to violate the state's public meeting laws and chose to exclude the @MiamiHerald and @TB_Times from a media briefing at the Capitol. He was so determined to keep us out, he had an FDLE vehicle pick up TV reporter Mike Vasilinda to give him back door access

Doing great here. Love seeing your posts. Hang in there. I trust there will still be another trial or two for us. No way that dang virus will get us down. Just stay safe, my friend.
