You reminded me. Is there ANY country that has enough ventilators?
I don't think any state or country was prepared for this. None IMO.

Mary Ellen Klas, the Herald’s bureau chief for the Miami Herald/Tampa Bay Times Tallahassee Bureau, said she was refused entry into the Capitol in Tallahassee to attend a press briefing by the governor, lieutenant governor, director of emergency management and state surgeon general regarding COVID-19 testing, access to medicine and efforts to prevent New Yorkers from flying into the state.

On Twitter, Klas said a reporter for the News Service of Florida was told that he would be shut out as well if he insisted that Klas be allowed to cover the press conference in person. She posted a video of Meredith Beatrice, a state spokeswoman, explaining that Klas could view the press conference on a state-sponsored public affairs media service that live streams state government events.

Klas said later in an interview that Beatrice also told her the state was refusing her access into the Capitol because she had requested “social distancing” at the governor’s briefings. Days earlier, Klas asked that the governor’s staff help protect reporters by holding Zoom-style video conference press briefings so that questions could be asked without requiring reporters to gather in close proximity.

The top editors of the Herald, Times, el Nuevo Herald, Bradenton Herald, Palm Beach Post, Orlando Sentinel and South Florida Sun Sentinel made the same request of DeSantis’ office in a March 20 letter. DeSantis’ office did not respond, according to Miami Herald President & Publisher/Executive Editor Aminda Marqués González.

Yikes. That's another kick in the pants to freedom of the press.

I wish everyone could understand this instead of drawing lines in the sand. Jmo

So I apologize if this has been discussed before, but what is a humane solution? They have to dock somewhere, and the dead need to be removed. Genuinely asking because I don't know.

This seems to be the most humane solution. It looks like a lot of care and planning is going into disembarking the ship, much of it at the Cruise line's expense. I hope all goes well, and that the souls on board will find safe harbour.

Gov. DeWine to hold coronavirus briefing on FDA decision at 2 p.m.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted will now be holding a briefing on Sunday, March 29 at 2 p.m., about the decision made by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to limit Battelle Technology to sterilizing 10,000 masks a day and other coronavirus updates.

DeWine made a public appeal to the FDA during his briefing on Saturday, March 28. He asked that it green light Battelle’s new sterilization system so that could clean 160,000 surgical masks a day.

This article has been updated, very interesting. But it's not China or any other country sending us supplies out of altruism. This is a commercial venture facilitated by FEMA. In the best of ways.
Inside the start of the great virus airlift

Why it matters: The flight is the start of what might end up being the largest government-led airlift of emergency medical supplies into the United States.

  • That's according to Rear Adm. John Polowczyk, who runs the coronavirus supply chain task force at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He spoke to Axios on Saturday night.
  • The airlift is the most dramatic part of the Trump administration's frantic attempts to catch up with a nationwide medical equipment crisis.
    ---------------------------
  • What's next: Polowczyk told Axios that he's already booked 22 similar flights over the next two weeks.
    • Starting with this weekend's airlift, he said, "We have essentially a flight a day, mostly from Asia" to expedite the transport of medical equipment that distributors already plan to sell into the U.S.
    • ---------------------
Driving the news: This weekend's first load of medical supplies will go into the New York tri-state area, Polowczyk said, and subsequent flights will distribute supplies to other parts of the country.
    • A distributor bought these supplies and already planned to sell them in the New York tri-state area, Polowczyk said, but the supplies would normally be on ships, which would take 37 days.
    • "That's what this supply chain looks like because it's a 70-cent mask," he added. FEMA is expediting this process — chartering flights from around the world to move the equipment to the U.S. in a day.
    • ------------------------------

So, it's not these far east countries donating supplies to us, it's kind of a joint venture between private distributors buying the supplies, and FEMA getting the shipments to the USA on planes instead of by boat. This Admiral Polowczyk sounds professional, smart, innovative, and I'm glad he's there in the job. Read the article re why he is not in favor of using the DPA for distribution at this point.
The Berlin airlift jumped into my mind, but now the foe is not Russia, it's a virus.

FLORIDA

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis directed the Florida Department of Transportation to set up checkpoints along the Florida border
to stop drivers coming from what he calls coronavirus hot spots.

One of them is set up on Interstate 10 just across the border from Mobile, Alabama.

All drivers, except semi-trucks, have to pull into a weigh station. Workers from the Florida Department of Health, Florida Department of Transportation and Florida Highway Patrol ask questions about where your trip started and where you are headed.

People from Connecticut, Louisiana, New Jersey and New York are being told to self-isolate for 14 days. If they refuse, they could face misdemeanor charges.

The order does not apply to people who are performing military, emergency, health or infrastructure response or anyone involved in commercial activity, including people who live in Georgia and commute to work in Florida, FDOT said.

DeSantis says nearby New Orleans, in particular, has a growing coronavirus problem and he wants to keep people in the Panhandle safe.

Florida is also setting up a similar checkpoint on I-95 north of Jacksonville.

NEW YORK.....good to know

"A plane from Shanghai arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York Sunday morning carrying an extraordinary load
: 12 million gloves, 130,000 N95 masks, 1.7 million surgical masks, 50,000 gowns, 130,000 hand sanitizer units, and 36,000 thermometers".

What about the reat of the US. We re a small town and not receiving any PPE from our state government.

Everything is going to NY and this state doesn't even have mandatory shelter in place. They are threatening to sue other states for those traveling into our areas, they REFUSE to self isolate for 14 days. We are trying to protect yourselves, from a population who refuses to comply with CDC recommendations and a Governor that gets everything because he's screaming to the press.

The residents of NY have the same blood as in my body, we are all equal!!! I'm feed up with how special NY is.

NO New Yorker is more important than any other human being!!!

The article explains that those are private supplies purchased by a distributor, this is not the federal government providing the supplies. FEMA is facilitating the shipments on planes for the distributors, and according to the article the first shipment is going to tri-state, the rest of the shipments all over the country. But it's the distributor who owns the product, not the government. Reading between the lines, distribution and choice of destinations probably depends on which state has placed purchase orders with those distributors.

Best read the Constitution. Even Covid does not break our constitution. Given what we haven't done that we could have done over the past two months... we can not just pop up with Martial Law willy nilly. Chaos.

Is Martial Law your only option in an emergency such as this? I'm not familiar with US options for maintaining order. Does this mean that military law replaces domestic law?

Canada has an Emergency Measures Act, which suspends civil liberties for a short period in order to ensure safety and security during national crises. It stops short of martial law. Justice still remains with the courts. Even so, this has never been done without extreme cause, and no one is talking about doing it now.

I have a friend that owns a large rental complex, his monthly mortgage payment is near 6 figures. His management company had 50ish court dates for evictions, non paying tenants for non Covid reasons. Some 3-4 months delinquent. When he finally evicts them, they will owe 7-8 months, or more. He will likely take bankruptcy. Not everyone has a valid reason for non payment, some are still working, or receiving their normal stipend.
My landlord offered a whole whopping 5% discount! Thinking I’ll treat myself to a good take out dinner to celebrate....

I don't know if this is true, or just hopeful.

B.C. should have enough beds and ventilators for COVID-19 patients: officials

British Columbia should have enough hospital beds and ventilators to cope with the surge in COVID-19 patients that has overwhelmed hospitals in Italy, according to models health officials released on Friday.

And while sweeping restrictions put in place this month on travel, businesses and social gatherings are helping curb transmission of the novel coronavirus, those orders need to be maintained and followed to keep trends moving in the desired direction, Provincial Health Officer Bonnie Henry said.

LOUISIANA

On conditions in Louisiana, Gov. Edwards tells @MarthaRaddatz: "We obviously have a spread that is growing faster than we would like to see. We remain on a trajectory to overwhelm our capacity to deliver health care by the end of the first week in April." This is my state. I have not problem with other states limiting and or preventing our citizens from visiting other states during the pandemic. I personally have no problems with other states do this during this overwhelming pandemic. The individual State Departments Health are struggling to contain its own issues.
