Australia government says growth rate of coronavirus infection slows

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia's health minister said on Sunday there were "early, positive signs" of a slowdown in the growth rate in new coronavirus infections in the country, with the growth rate approximately halving over the past week.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the slower growth in new inflections showed social distancing measures were working.

"This time last week the rate of increase on cases was up around 25% to 30% a day," Morrison told a press conference.

"That rate now over the last few days has fallen to about 13% - 15%.

thank you but i actually quoted this exact same thing last night lol :) but great minds think alike!

As far as I can tell, most people can get tested only when they get to the hospital near death. Unless you are rich, famous, or a senator.
That’s the case in Italy, which is partially the reason for the incredibly high mortality rate (age of the population is another factor).

That’s not the case here, although some parts of the country are certainly struggling as far as testing goes.

Hopefully these newly approved tests start paying dividends.

Mine was Wednesday. I just played it cool and delayed family dinner out until we can do that again someday. But, my birthday isn't a big deal to me. Jmo

I managed to become elderly on March 23. I normally am not that into my birthday (although my kids like to celebrate it and look forward to it). We face timed. I had actually gotten myself psyched up about a year ago for my 65th and had some ideas about how to celebrate at this one seaside restaurant.

No problem, though. Don't care. Didn't have anything to wear anyway (well maybe I did). I missed the two granddaughters and their happy faces - so on my 66th, I will remember that I missed it.

NYC

There is an operation underway to build an emergency hospital inside Central Park.

Sunday morning, trucks filled with equipment and supplies parked along 5th Avenue, and workers with the North Carolina based Christian organization Samaritan’s Purse began constructing a 68-bed emergency field hospital across from Mount Sinai Hospital.

Dr. Elliott Tenpenny, the team leader of this field operation, tells NY1 state officials approved the plan after Mount Sinai Hospital reached out for assistance.

The field hospital will be composed of a respiratory care unit with ICU capability. Dr. Tenpenny said highly trained doctors and nurses with experience in infectious diseases will be deployed on a rotating basis.

Thank you again @Henry2326 and everyone for all the great posts and helping to keep up with so much different information as it comes in!

My friend pays $7200 a month for insurance alone. He needs 80% paying occupancy per month to break even.

That's a ton of insurance. I wonder if the insurance company has a plan to offer some relief. Although I think most insurance companies are from the devil, perhaps they have a provision for this difficult time. It might be worth asking.

My dad had two four plexus that I sold for him last year. He was extremely generous to his tenants and they really abused his kindness. I had to sell the four plexus because I needed money to pay for my parents' care. I felt bad about it because I knew some of the tenants would be evicted within months but they abused my dad's kindness. I had to sell because I was spending 20k a month for my parents' care. I am so glad that I sold the apartments last year because I could not evict during these times. I would have to dig into my own money to keep the tenants a float. It is just a no win situation. I am just so glad that I don't have to worry about the apartments and the tenants during this crisis.
I’m glad for you. We had rentals years ago (45 units) it was a never ending nightmare.

The complex is huge, so his liability is huge. He’s a successful biz man, or has been thus far, so he’s insured to the max for self protection.

I'm very glad you didn't have that double burden either. You sound like an amazing person. Probably a lot like your dad. I too am glad you didn't have that extra worry.

“Shawn Marshall Myers, a 41-year-old registered sex offender who was also indicted as a murder accomplice, was arrested after twice violating Gov. Larry Hogan’s order against gatherings of more than 10 people, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release
What an a**hat.

I've decided the only clothes I really need to launder or keep are the ones I can wear for work-at-home and at actual work. I'll be wearing pajamas (black capris) to work. I promise I'll wear a shirt as well. Of some kind.

If anyone has any ideas about how to lose self-consciousness and embrace Zoom, it would be much appreciated.

Lexington woman who tested positive for COVID-19 went through week-long struggle to be tested
Warren, a speech pathologist in Lexington, says she went to the UK emergency room and when all other tests came back negative she asked if she could be tested for COVID-19. It was the start of week-long struggle to get tested. She reached out to Baptist Health, the state hotline and the Health Department and was told she didn't qualify to be tested.

Perhaps the take away from this is that if you feel you need a test, presume you are positive and act accordingly: isolate, inform your contacts, learn how to keep your environment clean, and check the WHO site to learn how to take care of yourself.

If necessary, call an ambulance and tell them you are presumed positive.

Our governor is doing his PC. He voiced concern over reports of too many people at home improvement stores & said he will need to speak with them & see what they can do about the lack of social distancing, will determine if they are essential (paraphrased). Stressed responsible shopping.

A Mercer county man wants a test but refuses to comply with the health dept & answer questions about exposure sites/contacts. Duh

Our state health department doctor again stressing to act like everyone has Covid.

Lowe's (Home Improvement) and Wal-Mart have looked perpetually like Christmas Eve for weeks. I have not darkened the door of Wal-Mart. I fear when these stimulus checks come, many will spend them at Wal-Mart instead of using them for rent/bills. Did you hear the reporter at the WH press conference ask what are people supposed to do with the stimulus checks? I wanted to say, DUH!! pay bills...........

Never mind the billions paid out each year to actors, singers and sports stars, the balance needs redressing. I am pretty sure (in the UK at least judging from the fervent support for our NHS staff) that there will be a huge backlash over all this. This crisis has proved who is really important in our world.
Wow - so much truth! Thank you for posting this.

I've been wearing mostly sweats while I was sick. Today I got up, washed my hair, put on my make up and was surprised that my Levis were looser. Hubby had a big smile on his face when he saw me. I didn't realize it at the time but I guess he was probably worried but didn't want to say anything. Today was a good day at my house.
