This would have been a good additional idea, imo. Make sure everyone has food and sundries.
Might have been a better idea, then the money can’t be used for drugs & alcohol. Moo

And desperate people do desperate things.......
Desperate times could be coming and maybe desperate people. Never say never. We just don't know the future.

Good point! I hadn't thought of that. They don't need the checks, the people who no longer have an income from their job need the checks. Something's wrong with the picture. Why would people on SS who have a sustaining gov't income need a bonus check?
I can think of several reasons. My husband, although retired and receiving a small pension and our social security checks, still does some independent contracting jobs as a writer, to supplement our income.
Our expenses seemed to increase this past month. Ordering food online is costly as they charge higher prices. And many of the 'substitutions' sent were higher priced premium versions of the basics we ordered. And we tipped pretty generously.

So I spent much more on food and liquor , :p, this month than usual. And production in Hollywood is shut down, so I don't foresee him getting his usual side gigs for awhile.

Although he did get a few calls about some potential animated productions. Voice Over actors can still work so that may save us.

Also, our 401k took a big hit. Holding our breath to see what happens next...

Anyway, those stimulus checks would be a big help. If nothing else, they would be donated to my son and his wife, as she has been laid off, and he is not sure how much longer he will be working now either.

Why would SS recipients need the $$? Stimulate the economy. Doesn't matter how it's spent.

US confirms record coronavirus death toll

The US had 884 coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday, AFP reports.

The news comes as president Donald Trump said earlier that federal stockpiles of personal protective equipment for medical professionals were almost depleted.

Coronavirus live news: global cases near million mark as US records highest daily death toll
And almost half of those were in New York state?

Cuomo: coronavirus deaths near 2,000 in New York

"April 1, 2020 at 1:21 PM EDT - Updated April 1 at 6:33 PM

ALBANY, N.Y. (WWNY) - Within 24 hours, nearly 400 more New Yorkers died from COVID-19.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday that 1,941 people in the state have now died from the virus. That's up from 1,550 on Tuesday.

He said the number of confirmed cases in the state has risen to 83,712. ..."

My understanding of how it reads is that if you normally don't file a tax return because you are receiving SS and your income isn't high enough, you won't automatically get relief money. However, if you have other income besides your SS and filed a return in 2018, you will automatically get a check.
No?
That's what I am hoping. We get 1099's, so we file taxes every year. But we haven;'t filed this year yet, for 2019 taxes. I hope that is not a problem.

Desperate times could be coming and maybe desperate people. Never say never. We just don't know the future.

Roaring 20s, dirty 30s, warring 40s, dancing 50s, hippy rights 60s, disco seventies, punk 80s, head banger 90s, rap 2000s, metrosexual punk revival 2010, self-indulgence 2020.

Reset would be good - fewer people prancing in public in their underwear, less mememe, self awareness, personal awareness.

My understanding is that they're going by our 2018 return.

Bruce Power to donate 600,000 masks, gowns to health care workers

Bruce Power to donate 600,000 masks, gowns to health care workers

Where do the masks come from?

The Canadian federal gov't has said that they will distribute medical equipment to provinces according to need. Are people in provinces now claiming they will provide supplies locally?

Is the donation to the federal gov't, or is a more local cause. If so, where are the masks coming from. China is known to be providing faulty masks to several countries including Spain and the Netherlands. Local initiatives should rely on the federal government to oversee pandemic resources.

Locals buying faulty Chinese masks would make things so much worse. Spain and the NL were delivering millions of faulty masks from China.

Why do people who receive a SS check - enough to pay the bills - need a bonus check during a pandemic. They have enough money to cover expenses. It's people who are suddenly out of a paycheck that need the $1200 checks.
Social Security checks do not always cover one's bills. I think most people on SS supplement their income by working part time. Many have lost those side jobs. JMO

The reality for DeSantis is he could not keep US citizens out. ... But late Wednesday he told Fox News network that he had not realized there were US citizens aboard.

Seriously? Was he not even curious enough to ask who was onboard the ships? That's monsterous!

If you have not filed this year, they will go off last year's filing.

Are SS checks enough to pay the bills under normal circumstances, or do people supplement the SS income by working parttime?
We supplement by working part time jobs.

Also, we spent a lot more on food and supplies, to stock up fully for the next month. I spent money I wouldn't normally have spent, which leaves us a bit short.

Where are they coming from?

From their own supply plus purchases they have and will be making. I would imagine that they have a ton of masks on hand.

I don't do drugs but I will probably use my money to buy some beer. Maybe some Labatt Blue.

IMO no one should be denied. The prisoners being released from jail due to the pandemic will receive a stimulus check as long as they filed a tax return, even though the tax payers have been paying for their room and board for however long they were incarcerated. I was employed for 50 years and paid into SS every paycheck. If I died tomorrow, my SS goes back to the government. Why should I be denied? JMO

I think Otto meant originally, as in who manufactured them.
