i do file every year, its really easy and free with the companies listed on the irs web page. Just search for free file on irs dot gov. Then choose one of the companies and they hold your hand through the whole thing. Impossible to make an error as they do all the addition, assuming they know the total SS paid. People not computer savvy can have a relative help them. But what with quarantine, idk. A relative could log into the free filing site and do it for granny.

I kind of understand why they can't blanket mail the checks to all SS recipients, some might make too much money for the upper threshold.
Anyway its super easy and doesn't cost a dime.

ETA I think you can't file back taxes this way but for 2019, yes for sure.

It's been 20 years since we've had to (required to) put down the SSN of our dependents on IRS forms. All babies have to have a SNN. You can't claim them as a deduction without the SNN.

So, if you claimed someone as a dependent in 2018 (filed in 2019), you're good to go.

No, dependents do not file separately. The IRS is basing the checks on 2018 filings. A dependent is a dependent until another filing is made. (I think at age 25 you have to check some boxes to continue them as a dependent).

No one needs to go online to file any paperwork as far as I know and I'd like to see a .gov statement that we do.

They are saying over and over and over that it's based on our 2018 filings. So I guess if some reason you made a mistake on that return, you could refile.

They are using our US universal system, which is the IRS.

Yes, it's true that you should have filed your taxes in 2018. If you are on social security, though, you still get the check. If you never owed any money to IRS because you've never worked and you've somehow managed not to be someone's dependent (i.e., you're homeless or living with parents and not disabled and you're past 25) you may have to take steps to refile for 2018 and hope for the best (everyone over 25 who isn't a dependent should have gone ahead and filed - for reasons).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (but with sources).

From irs.gov: Economic impact payments: What you need to know | Internal Revenue Service

No action needed by most people at this time

I am not typically required to file a tax return. Can I still receive my payment?
Yes. People who typically do not file a tax return will need to file a simple tax return to receive an economic impact payment. Low-income taxpayers, senior citizens, Social Security recipients, some veterans and individuals with disabilities who are otherwise not required to file a tax return will not owe tax.

How can I file the tax return needed to receive my economic impact payment?
IRS.gov/coronavirus will soon provide information instructing people in these groups on how to file a 2019 tax return with simple, but necessary, information including their filing status, number of dependents and direct deposit bank account information.

Just checking in to express my appreciation for the updates. Today is moving day and I’ve had very little time to keep up to date. Plus my TV is still sitting on my living room floor...

ETA: I’m fully aware there are other sources for news :rolleyes:but TV is the easiest while attempting to multitask

World leaders had a responsibility to pay attention and stop mass gatherings well before the virus was out of control. I will never accept that they didn't bother to react because it wasn't yet a problem in their hospitals. It's their job to pay attention and make tough, unpopular decisions to protect their societies. It was pure arrogance to think that the virus was a China problem, plus Hong Kong, Japan, S. Korea, Cruise ships, etc. and that world travel would not spread the virus.
TBH we have only started taking notice in UK when they began cancelling games towards the end of the Six Nations Rugby tournament. These were between France, Italy, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. I think the virus spread via those games too.

SO... I'm really really glad I stocked the fridge and kept it stocked during this so that when it died today it died carrying a full load! We can't get a new one until Friday and of course they won't deliver it beyond the front porch. So that means somehow getting it to the kitchen ourselves and then an unplanned trip to the grocery store where I doubt we'll find enough to actually refill it.

ARGH!!!

/rant

I'm grateful we were able to easily replace it and it won't break the bank to start refilling it and the new fridge is super nice.

But still.

One of the most terrible aspects of this epidemic will be the economic consequences. We have not handled this reasonably or well. I hope for better next time.

And there are so many people needing help, I do not have a clue how to begin to help.

We were donating food monthly through the PORCH hunger relief program in our neighborhood, but that has stopped for now. We were also volunteering monthly to help with a free community lunch, but that has also come to a halt. So now we are just donating money to food pantries.

I need to research this topic to look for other nonprofit organizations that help needy and suffering people in our region (central NC).

Next question: how are the non-Americans going to get home?
And: how would you like to be on a ship with 4 dead passengers? Not exactly what you signed up for, eh?
Lol, my husband had to fly from Japan to LAX with his seat mate deceased from a heart attack. It happens. In my husband’s case, they brought two extra blankets, so my husband could cover the deceased. L o n g flight, but no one pestering him.

I may be able to help you get in contact with a few organizations in NC I know of who are still operating (although in a slightly limited capacity). I will reach out to a few contacts I have in NC who I’ve previously volunteered with.

I don't know if this has already been posted. I just signed on and read this. So Sad

Death of 6-week-old baby in Connecticut linked to coronavirus

A newborn's death in Hartford, Connecticut, is believed to be to one of the youngest coronavirus-related deaths.

The 6-week-old baby from the Hartford area was brought to a hospital late last week and could not be revived, according to Gov. Ned Lamont on Wednesday. Lamont called the death heartbreaking, noting that it could be the youngest death globally due to complications with COVID-19, the disease associated with coronavirus.

"This is a virus that attacks our most fragile without mercy," Lamont said on Twitter. "This also stresses the importance of staying home and limiting exposure to other people."

Family of dead British man appeal to Florida to let Zaandam dock

"Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, has said the passengers, many of whom are elderly, cannot be “dumped” in his state, dismissing them as mostly “foreigners”. On Tuesday, the US president, Donald Trump, said he would speak to DeSantis about allowing the cruise liners into port, but no local permission has yet been given.

Brown appealed to local officials in Broward county, south-east Florida, to let the Zaandam and Rotterdam into port. She said her aunt was stuck in a room with her husband’s possessions and was desperate to get off the ship.

She told the Guardian: “It has been horrendous. As soon as it happened, they had to go into isolation. She’s obviously isolated in a room with all of her husband’s items. She is not feeling well herself, she has got symptoms – a really severe cough. I have just spoken to her and she is coughing away. She is completely isolated grieving my uncle. She’s only got one channel on the TV – the news.”

Brown, an NHS midwife, said she did not know if her uncle, a businessman, had tested positive for Covid-19, but he was on a ventilator before he died. Three other people have died on the Zaandam, while nine have tested positive for Covid-19 and dozens of others are ill with flu-like symptoms.

Brown said her uncle had been feeling well on the Friday before he died but quickly deteriorated after visiting the cruise liner’s medical centre on Saturday.

Appealing to local officials and to Trump, Brown said: “These are people. They are people that are unwell and they need to get home. It is the most inhumane thing. I feel desperately sorry for the crew. I feel like the crew is being ignored and it’s all about the passengers. These are human beings and they need help, whatever nationality they are from.

“We need to allow them to dock. They cannot just leave people who are seriously ill out at sea. They have tried to put a plan in place, but they have to allow the ship to dock initially first. You cannot just leave people out at sea with nothing. More people are going to die.” "

Cruise Ship Struggling With COVID-19 Headed To Florida

A little bit more info - so a total of 1243 passengers, 305 US, 250 Canadians, 120 Australians and (1243-675) 568 passengers from Ireland, the United Kingdom and other European countries.

"Holland America says a combined 1,243 passengers and 1,247 crew are aboard the Zaandam and a sister ship, the Rotterdam. Holland America sent the Rotterdam to bring medical personnel and supplies to the Zaandam last week after dozens became sick and four elderly passengers died. A number of elderly, but healthy passengers considered at risk were moved to the Rotterdam. Both ships went through the Panama Canal earlier this week.

Under the plan Carnival is discussing with Broward County officials, the company would charter planes and buses to take healthy passengers directly from the port in Fort Lauderdale to their destinations. Among the many foreign passengers on the cruise, Carnival says there were 250 Canadians, 120 Australians, plus passengers from Ireland, the United Kingdom and other European countries.

Although nearly 120 crew members and 76 guests have been sick with flu-like symptoms, Carnival vice president Bill Burke says at least 60 have totally recovered. Seven people are sick enough that they're being treated in the ship's medical center. Two are so sick, the company has asked Mexico for permission to take them there for treatment. Burke said Mexico has refused. Speaking in person at the County Commission meeting, he said, "We are coming to the place of last resort. Now, I hope that those two people we would like to medevac today to Mexico will survive the couple-day transit."

The commission deferred action until a plan is finalized that gives the county assurances sick passengers and crew members from the Zaandam won't be a burden on area hospitals. Broward County Commissioner Nan Rich says once the plan is finalized, the ship should be allowed to dock. She said, "These people have been turned away from so many countries, one after the other. We are their last hope. What are we going to do? Let the ship go back out to sea and just float around and let people die? I don't think so." "

Love this lady. A true tender heart, paired with a sharp mind.

Me too. She’s amazing. I just hate that Dolly Parton and I were born six days apart and she looks sooooo much better than I do! It must be that she’s six days younger. :D

When I heard that Brazil Mardi Gras was going ahead in early March, I was in disbelief.

It's understandable that a lot of people were not paying attention to news, but world leaders were paying attention to what was happening in China and SE Asia starting in early January. They thought that even though China was unable to contact trace the virus, and therefore unable to contain the virus, most other countries believed that they could contain the virus.

It was known early on that the fatal (2-4% mortality rate) virus was highly contagious, that it survived on surfaces for 3-5 days, that people without symptoms could transmit the virus. So much was known, and the hope was containment. That has failed in every country that tried. China had already demonstrated that the only way to slow down transmission is through isolation - that should have been the first clue that large gatherings become a virus disaster 2 weeks later.

SS payments have not been interrupted, correct? So there is little covid financial impact to SS beneficiaries? In other words, they still receive their usual amount, as if there is no hideous virus?

Oh no! So sorry to hear that. It's bad enough with one crazy pandemic, but add a fridge full of expired food, that's a challenge.

If you're collecting social security and haven't filed a tax return you will receive no relief money.

Hello everyone, hope all is well for you. This afternoon I had a catnap with my 2 dogs on the couch. My cats don't like how the dogs lounged with me so they took to a bed. I keep telling the dogs that they must be nice to my cats because we are all in this together, never helps! I am doing selective and limited reading about things since my nightmares are back. My husband was told to wake me during them so he gets less sleep doing so and has late work hours. Anyway during my short nap I kept thinking about the pastel colors of TP that of course I saw at friends houses or stores, (early 80's) Mom rarely matched our TP, lol!

Good point! I hadn't thought of that. They don't need the checks, the people who no longer have an income from their job need the checks. Something's wrong with the picture. Why would people on SS who have a sustaining gov't income need a bonus check?
