Only 138 passengers on that ship have US Passports, let them disembark directly into a military base quarantine. The others can be taken to their country of citizenship, Florida already has enough problems of their own.

In the past, infected people from cruise ships that landed in the US were allowed to pass through, board international flights, and transport the virus to other countries. Some of the first cases in Canada were cruise ship passengers who disembarked in the US.

Florida can do what California did - send them on their way, along with the Spring Break stragglers.

Feel free to disagree, but I find it barbaric to not let a ship dock, with people dying of a disease. I know Florida has their own problems, but you find a way to end that situation, not punt. I never could imagine such issues in the States, and the disregard for life. There are people on those ships that are not sick too.

Trump says the US will evacuate Canadian and British citizens from the stranded Zaandam cruise ship.

The family of a British man who died on board the coronavirus-stricken ship earlier appealed to the US president to allow the ship to dock.

John Carter died on 22 March after falling unwell; one of four people to have died on the ship. The Zaandam, which is carrying more than 200 British nationals, is embroiled in a bitter dispute over plans to disembark passengers in the US.

It passed through the Panama Canal on Monday after being denied entry to several ports, and is seeking to dock in Florida later this week.

Well, we know who to blame for that.

I have said that world leaders dropped the ball when they allowed mass gatherings, such as large sporting events in Europe, after they knew that an epidemic was breaking out in several countries.

Well, if a trip to ER with hairy legs isn’t enough incentive for me to fire up the pruning shears, I don’t know what it will take! :D

I’ve thought about this too LOL

My understanding of how it reads is that if you normally don't file a tax return because you are receiving SS and your income isn't high enough, you won't automatically get relief money. However, if you have other income besides your SS and filed a return in 2018, you will automatically get a check.
No?

Why do people who receive a SS check - enough to pay the bills - need a bonus check during a pandemic. They have enough money to cover expenses. It's people who are suddenly out of a paycheck that need the $1200 checks.

If you're collecting social security and haven't filed a tax return you will receive no relief money.
Sure you can.

I am not typically required to file a tax return. Can I still receive my payment?
Yes. People who typically do not file a tax return will need to file a simple tax return to receive an economic impact payment. Low-income taxpayers, senior citizens, Social Security recipients, some veterans and individuals with disabilities who are otherwise not required to file a tax return will not owe tax.

This is not my understanding but the requirements are not clear and keep changing. I guess by now we should be used to dysfunctional government.

My niece is an Ironman Triathalon athlete, and has signed up for 2 events this year in the US. Ironman organization is slow to cancel any events, and they're not giving refunds, only deferred to next year. We went with her to Germany last year, but didn't plan any international events this year, but as I look at the events being cancelled, they are only cancelling or postponing events that take place in May, not beyond for international or in the US. It is my opinion, as well as the athletes, that they simply don't want to lose money.

SS checks are not enough to pay the bills, and if the goal of the bill is to stimulate the economy giving them more money to spend can only help.

Lol, idk, but one dude sprayed some liquid on my house and vigorously wiped it with a towel, he had a thick island accent, I’m not exactly certain what he attempted to articulate, I only wanted them gone. Interestingly, they did not stop at the neighboring house.
Is it called soap?

A lot of people who don't need the money to pays bills will get it.

I'm one of them. Even though my hours have been cut I have an emergency fund for times like this. It would be nearly impossible for the Feds to determine who really needs the money and who doesn't. By the time they figured it out it would be way too late. JMO

People are dying of the disease on land as well. They are sheltering in place. Their place is the ship.

But what if this had not happened, meaning Covid & resulting checks, they would only have normal SS, correct?
I thought SS was somehow interrupted & recipients would no longer get checks. Now I see what is going on, lol. So they are required to file taxes but don’t normally?

The ppl suddenly out of jobs will be getting unemployment which has been aumented, plus they are getting the check, which could be 3,400 for a family of 4.

I'm not defending a "check" vs making the foreign flagged cruise industry "vibrant" with taxpayer grants and loans, but the average ss check is less than 1200, for women, substantially more for men. Many seniors eat cat food, and have you checked the cost of cat food lately? Seniors are affected by changes in the economy just as everyone else is.

If all you lost was money, you got off easy.
More people need to learn this.

I think some basic costs have increased ie eggs. And for those who aren’t safe going to grocery stores etc, delivery fees can add up. I hope every individual that can use an extra $1200 will get it. These are tough times.

Are SS checks enough to pay the bills under normal circumstances, or do people supplement the SS income by working parttime?
