Prob’ so! Maybe they made a simple form for a person to enter basic info.
Maybe the Treasury didn't have the bank information to do a direct deposit for everyone and they have now come up with a way for the Social Security Administration to give them that info. JMO.

They are right at the threshold for getting the full stimulus check (150k for joint filers) so it makes sense that there has to be a cutoff somewhere, and the higher income group will need it the least. Even up to a joint income of 198k they get something. And that's adjusted gross income.

If the maximum allowed household income to receive a pandemic relief cheque is $149,999US, then it seems like something is wrong with this picture. Isn't the money for people who can't pay rent and food without their monthly income?

I’m astounded from reading FB of local gov’t as well as comments from Msm sites how many people think the Covid is cool as it means unemployment, vacation, stimulus, no rent, etc. I’d prefer to work two FT jobs & have my health than $1200 & an opportunity to stiff my landlord. Jmo
For some it is better to collect unemployment than to work.

The $2 trillion relief package makes unemployment pay more than work

Consider $600 a week is the pay before taxes for an employee who works 40 hours a week at $15 an hour, or 30 hours a week at $20 an hour. So not working will pay that person the $600 federal benefit on top of the regular benefit of $300 depending on the state. So it is $600 a week if you work, and $900 a week if you do not. For the minimum wage person who makes $400 a week, the effect is more extreme. The unemployment program will pay more than twice as much as working.

It is a good time to call and get ahead of it if you could better use that money for other essentials right now.
Good advice, especially to preserve credit scores. Best to call than ignore.
Student loans......they did so much for us, how can we ever repay them?

I think this idea was formulated a month ago when the people leading the US "response" was the economic team that viewed this as a temporary economic crisis instead of a public health crisis. They just looked to what they did in 2008 when they sent stimulus checks to make people feel better about the billions that went to the banks. If everyone has extra cash, they will spend it, hopefully propping up consumer-facing businesses.

Now the US has thankfully seemed to pivot to realizing this is a public health disaster and not a stock market issue. But once you say you're giving everyone free money no one is going to take it back.

To your point, the stimulus bill also gives $600 a week on top of a state's usual unemployment payments to anyone who applies for unemployment. There are also billions allocated to SBA (Small Business Administration) loans that are FORGIVABLE if spent on payroll. Small businesses can take out loans based on 2.5x their monthly payroll expense and if they keep the workers, the loans don't have to be paid back. So it is a massive handout to small businesses if you know how to navigate the loan system (which granted is not the small businesses who most need this money).

JMO!

I know, and many hope this pandemic continues for the long term.

I have to apologize for asking so many questions, but I live in the great white north where things are so different. There's no such things as "food stamps" except as an historic WW2 artifact. I don't know what section 8 housing is, but I'm guessing it's subsidized - doesn't matter. Point is that these are new concepts, as is the idea that each state has a few decision makers who sometimes disagree, and there are bidding wars for medical supplies.

In Canada, hospitals, schools and post-secondary institutions are government run. National health care eliminates any concern about health care costs during pandemic. Welfare is a thing, but those people are not eligible for loss of income checks at this time. People must have worked $5000 income in the last 52 weeks to be eligible for pandemic cheques.

Benefit_information_3_27.pdf

In Canada, the federal government defers to health ministers to decide where medical supplies go based on need. You will not hear about a bidding war for surgical masks in Canada.

It's in situations like this where we realize the differences between countries. Brazil, for example, is in party-on mode.

I'm asking respectfully, why keep arguing that people in the US who live at the poverty level don't deserve US stimulus checks when you don't live in the US? I'm asking respectfully because it seems to matter quite a bit to you. Jmo

What do you think of the "yesterday" report from China showing 36 new cases and 7 new deaths.

China has reported that all new cases are returning travellers. Have you noticed that in photos of the first epicentre today, everyone seems to be young and wearing a new face-mask. There seems to be ongoing temperature testing still today. I don't think it's finished. I think people in some age groups, perhaps people who have the antibodies, have rejoined the work force.

I think China wants to be the first country to declare that they have conquered the virus. I think they will manipulate the information to give the appearance that they are the first.

It all catches up. I've never not worked, from age sixteen to this year, 74, when I closed my little self employment gig. I've had friends who laid awake nights trying to get things free year after year, they ended up doing ok, you just can't worry about all of that. But I'm a gray panther now, you betcha, re ss and medicare.

Good point! I hadn't thought of that. They don't need the checks, the people who no longer have an income from their job need the checks. Something's wrong with the picture. Why would people on SS who have a sustaining gov't income need a bonus check?
I receive SS but I also have a supplemental income because SS is hardly enough to cover monthly expenses. I no longer have that supplemental income because of the virus.

@RANCH when our governor announced this, people on the lower pay spectrum were ecstatic.....
Then workers not laid off became angry. No win situation.
Many don’t realize the additional $600 is so they can pay rent & utility bills. They consider it fun money. They are not concerned about catching or transmitting Covid. Moo from PC Q & A session.
