Forced to close over coronavirus, these restaurants are now cooking meals for the homeless

Chef Maxcel Hardy moves boxes of food donated to the "Too Many Cooks in The Kitchen For Good" program.

[...]

After citywide restrictions closed restaurants in Detroit, Michigan, five chefs from local eateries took stock of their kitchens, pooled their perishables and started cooking up creations for the city's homeless.

They call their program Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen for Good, and with additional food donations, they are preparing meals for three shelters that are desperately trying to keep the city's homeless safe.

"The healthy meals are boosting the morale of the population, as well as lifting a financial burden from the mission," a representative from one of the shelters said.

As northern Italy is ravaged by coronavirus, there's trouble brewing down south

f98b28ec-8a44-4d96-9068-52591e5ab489.jpg

A man walks past a billboard raising awareness to the coronavirus measures implemented by the Italian government in Naples on March 22.

Four weeks into a nationwide lockdown, very few Italians are still singing from their balconies or banging pots and pans in solidarity.

Instead, flags were lowered to half-staff this week for the nearly 15,000 coronavirus victims including doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals who have perished since February 23.

Italy's wealthy northern provinces have taken the brunt of the coronavirus outbreak with more than 75% of overall cases and deaths north of Tuscany, in the center of the country, per the Italian Civil Protection agency.

Had the initial infection cluster started in the poorer southern regions, which do not have the same strong healthcare infrastructure, the crisis would have been even worse.

Wow. We need to recruit them for a new reality show like “Love Island” but instead of an island they’re locked in their cars for three months. No BBQs but three months of learning remedial 8th grade English.

Australia's immigration chief tells tourists: Take the next flight home

A woman runs around Sydney Harbour on April 1.

Australia is threatening to kick out visitors who don't comply with the country's social distancing rules.

At a news conference today, acting immigration minister Alan Tudge had a blunt message for non-compliant travelers:

"A, you’ll be in breach of state law for doing that and you can be fined. B, you’ll be breaching your visa conditions and if we find that out we’ll be kicking you out of the country. And then that will be a mark against your name for future visits to Australia. This is deadly serious,” he said at a news conference today.
He also urged international tourists to leave the country.

Production of Corona beer has been temporarily suspended in Mexico because of the coronavirus pandemic, said Grupo Modelo, the company that makes the popular beverage.

The cover of Peter May's book "Lockdown."

What happens when a once-rejected dystopian novel turns into reality? Ask Scottish author Peter May.

The screenwriter-turned-novelist wrote a book titled "Lockdown" in 2005 about a global pandemic. Fifteen years later, that's our reality due to coronavirus, which has so far infected more than 1 million people globally.

The book, which was rejected by publishers at the time for being too unrealistic, was finally published on Thursday.

"Lockdown," available only on Amazon UK, is being sold in Kindle format and will be available as a paperback and audiobook on April 30.

That coronavirus baby boom? Experts say it's unlikely

[...]

Demographers think it's unlikely. In fact, they say the US will probably see the number of births decrease -- and other notable population shifts are likely as well.

[...]

Why we won't see a baby boom:
  1. Financial uncertainty often makes people postpone or even forgo decisions to have children. The pandemic is now adding to this financial anxiety, which can see long-term lasting impacts.
  2. More people are dying in the US: The population is getting older and mortality rates are rising with the elderly while birth rates are decreasing. If the number of deaths starts to outpace the number of births, societal strain can follow.
  3. Immigration has dropped. Immigration rates had already been on the decline, but now the pandemic has shut borders. Immigration has historically kept populations' natural growth rate stable, with racial minorities making up more than half of US births.

UK's lockdown will remain in place for weeks

The UK’s social distancing rules will remain in force for several more weeks, despite signs the coronavirus outbreak is slowing, one of the country’s leading epidemiologists has said.

Professor Neil Ferguson, one of the experts who has been advising the government on its response, told the BBC there’s been an 85% drop in the typical number of people movements outside homes since the rules were put in place.

He says that’s vital to limiting the spread of the virus.

Our golf courses are open. Walking trails in some parks remain accessible, dog parks are open. As far as boats, anyone living on lakes or the deeper rivers can use their boats or fish. Bike clubs (lol, pedal bikes) are up and down my rural road in large groups. Idk about the large marinas. We have not had a “stay off the road” directive, but have been asked to avoid out of state travel, but people know it can’t be stopped. The parks dismantled playground equipment due to children congregating for hours in large groups. In the city limit subdivisions groups still walk around the ‘hoods in the evenings, afaik. Really there is no one to police them. Gitana mentioned she sees clusters in her area too. Some of us have farmlands with thousands of acres to walk on, no chance of seeing more than cows, horses, coyote, deer & such.
Get your bikini ready & enjoy your boat!

None of this is social distancing, except maybe getting on a boat as long as it is the same family under the same roof, no friends, no outside family, no one else. My husband called the marina and asked to have our boat ready for the season and put in the water; we slip it in the lagoon in the backyard that feeds into Barnegat Bay, we do not drive to a marina where we would run into anyone else (BTW, driving to a marina to jump on a boat for the day is considered non-essential and you will be warned to stay off the roads).

Our state shut down all beaches and state and county parks because people were congregating. No walks in the woods, no riding bikes on paved trails, and absolutely no golfing! Are golf courses open in other states that have a stay-at-home order? I'm shocked hearing golf courses are open around the nation.

Spain's death toll rise is flattening out

A further 809 people have now died from coronavirus in Spain, bringing the total to 11,744 deaths, according to Spanish Health Ministry figures released Saturday.

The deaths are a rise of 7.3% but are the lowest increase since March 26.

On Thursday, Spain's death toll surpassed 10,000, and the country joined Italy as one of only two countries to report five figure death tolls.

The ministry’s most recent data shows there are now 78,733 active cases of Covid-19 in Spain, an increase of 2,511 from Thursday – but also the smallest daily rise since March 20.

COVID-19 / Coronavirus Update for Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley and Land Between The Lakes
The Impact of COVID-19/Coronavirus on Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley and Land Between The Lakes
Updated April 3, 2020 - 4:41 p.m.

  • Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced he will be signing an Executive Order requiring anyone traveling to Kentucky to self-quarantine for 14 days.
  • Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced he will be signing an Executive Order requiring that Tennesseans stay home unless they are carrying out essential activities.
  • If you have plans to visit the Kentucky Lakes Area this spring, Explore Kentucky Lake is encouraging you to reschedule (not cancel!) your vacation plans for later this year.
Impact Summary
  • All boat ramps and access points on Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley remain open at this time, with the exception of a few inside Land Between The Lakes.
  • Virtually all facilities in Land Between The Lakes are closed, except for some trails and some lake access areas.
  • Some marinas, resorts and lodging facilities in the Kentucky Lakes Area outside Land Between The Lakes remain open, although facilities may be limited.
  • Some restaurants are open for take-out, although all dining rooms have been ordered closed by state officials.
  • @JerseyGirl I sat outside this morning, coffee with my dog, people are driving past with their camping trailers and boats, one caravan of 8 trucks. I think private campgrounds remain open or some might plan was to camp on large farms. 2/3 of the traffic appears to be recreational vehicles.

Call me Optimistic. I believe that our USA President, has a humongous smack down in the works for China.
I don't know what it is, but, I am guessing huge.
When, he is ready to do so.
I, for one will back up whatever sledge hammer he lays on China. 100%.
No country should be allowed, like, China, to continuously produce viruses that kill people over and over again.
Without Severe penalties!
This has to end.
No terrorists have been able to cripple our nation like China has, and continues to do so.
For me. I hope that President Donald J. Trump has a way to completely isolate China.
problem is... They produce our needed medicines.
For me, as a teeny, tiny speck in this universe.
I will look for "made in China".
I will Never buy, made in China again. Period.
What if it says "Made in PRC" ?
