I've heard as many as 40,000 kids are ignoring online learning.
E

Many kids are ignoring online learning. 15,000 in LA alone. Up to 25% of 600,000 have no internet.
Thousands of Los Angeles high school students are not accessing online learning during school closures

We have heard some states are doing nothing for the kids in terms of learning. Every internet provider, and even cell phone providers are providing free internet. Physical packets and workbooks are being passed out.

Almost everyone has a cell phone- and the classroom sites are accessible via cell. Duval County in FL handed out hot spots and laptops. Lousy districts and lousy parents make excuses. The good districts and good parents find a way, imo.

We should have prepared for the worst and immediately begun to check and replenish stockpiles. As a start. There are other points to be made, but too contentious for this venue.

The comparisons served a purpose other than to underscore potential loss of life.

It appears to mer that we did began doing those things, back at the very end of January.
White House Coronavirus Task Force - Wikipedia

The White House Coronavirus Task Force is a United States Department of State task force that "coordinates and oversees the Administration's efforts to monitor, prevent, contain, and mitigate the spread" of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).[1] It was established on January 29, 2020.[2]

The first known case in the United States of COVID-19 was confirmed in the state of Washington on January 20, 2020, in a 35-year-old man who had returned from Wuhan, China on January 15.[4]
The White House Coronavirus Task Force was established on January 29.[2] On January 31, the Trump administration declared a public health emergency,[5] and placed travel restrictions on entry for travellers from China.[6]

On March 10, 2020, The Hill reported that U.S. Senate Republicans who had attended a briefing with President Donald Trumphad encouraged him to hold more briefings and to make Anthony Fauci the "face of the federal government's response" because according to an unnamed senator, "he has credibility", he "speaks with authority" and he "has respect in the medical community."[7] The role of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar was downsized, according to the Wall Street Journal, with Pence taking a larger role.[8]

Statement from the Press Secretary Regarding the President’s Coronavirus Task Force
HEALTHCARE

Issued on: January 29, 2020

ALL NEWS
Today, President Donald J. Trump announced the formation of the President’s Coronavirus Task Force. Members of the Task Force have been meeting on a daily basis since Monday. At today’s meeting, which the President chaired, he charged the Task Force with leading the United States Government response to the novel 2019 coronavirus and with keeping him apprised of developments.

The Task Force is led by Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar, and is coordinated through the National Security Council. It is composed of subject matter experts from the White House and several United States Government agencies, and it includes some of the Nation’s foremost experts on infectious diseases.

The Task Force will lead the Administration’s efforts to monitor, contain, and mitigate the spread of the virus, while ensuring that the American people have the most accurate and up-to-date health and travel information.

The President’s top priority is the health and welfare of the American people. That is why, in 2018, President Trump signed the National Biodefense Strategy, which improves speed of action in situations such as this. The Administration, led by the President’s Task Force, will continue to work to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

Noting at the very end of Apr 1 WHO PC, Dr. Mike says he and Maria are currently pouring over reports from 4 countries (Germany, Singapore, US, China) on “viral shedding”. Making a note to see if these reports are available yet.

Press briefings

• There is so much data coming out in real time by scientists around the world. We are getting more and more “evidence-based data” from other countries.

This PC emphasizes that:
1. This is a new virus
2. It is also the first pandemic caused by a coronavirus

So much is unknown, but so much is also being learned, including forming policies on data related to the use of masks, length of infections, all the risk factors...this is early preliminary data that WHO says its grateful is being shared.

Some countries “are in the middle of the fight for their lives”, so they can’t necessarily collect this data at this moment in time.”

I wonder if this will change the way we educate children and parents choose home schooling over the traditional way.

I have been wondering if more employers will be open to more telecommuting, telework flexibilities. After all, most people are working from home now, if they can.

Reporting from San Diego, California.
The State has now shut down all marinas as well as beaches.
My favorite place to go in the world is to our 42 year old little boat which floats in San Diego.
Still have to pay her slip fees of course. Thank goodness we drive 11 year old paid off vehicles. Which is how we managed to buy our old boat.
Paying our utilities, insurance, house rent, and insurance is getting harder and harder.
Our little restaurant is now doing about 25% of our normal business. People are just running out of money.
But, we're both still healthy (I think), and there's pet and people food at our house.
Still, I want to cry.
Not for us so much, but for everyone else, throughout this world.

This is not standard work from home. Kids also are home, and need to be watched and educated. And there is a pandemic- s0 not typical - and these will all influence productivity, etc. * I am a permanent W@H er. Personally, I won't ever go back into an office.

Mine around here have blue lines or blue x every 6 ft. Maybe call and suggest it? Jmo
Looks as if it would be common sense, but also common sense for customers but that's JMO. Thanks for the advice about calling. I have not thought of that because I do not go often. I probably will not go back for a few more weeks now. But others need those lines, obviously, since they are not staying home and just think it's another day.

I still cannot believe the people who are walking into Walmart, Target, and grocery stores. The parking lots are full. They come out from the department stores pushing carts full of merchandise. Do they think they are immune? Do they not have friends and relatives who are in high risk groups?

I drive past these stores several times a day because I take care of an older couple a few miles from my home. I am extra careful to avoid all contact with everyone because this couple is definitely high risk. I am either at my house or their house, and I get our groceries and theirs using no-contact pick up at Kroger or Walmart. And the elderly couple does not leave their house at all.
Aren't most people going to have full carts when they leave Target or Walmart? I have only been to a grocery store twice in the past month, but my cart was full. I didn't plan on going again for awhile and I got some things for my elderly neighbour as well.

I don't see a problem with seeing lots of people at the markets with full carts. EVERYONE Needs supplies right now. JMO

I, too, need to pick up a prescription. Stopped wearing makeup for now. I cover my hair with a beanie, I wear a mask, and now will start using eye protection. Wish I could make myself one of these face shield hats.

You know this plastic zipper bags that bedspreads and sheet sets come in?? If you could get two sides apart without tearing that plastic then using double side tape to stick the plastic around the bill of your hat??? That seems, in my mind, it would work perfectly for a face shield mask
I mean it wouldn't be a fashion statement or anything but really, I think fashion is out at this point :D.

The good news. Considering we have over 363 million people living in the USA.
337,000. Thousand is a low number.
Plus, about 80% of those positives will experience no symptoms.
We need to focus on the positive news. Which the media doesn't want us to do, because, they don't give a flying fig about us, and want us to click on the bad news, so they can get more advertising money.
I'm not down playing this evil virus at all.
But, be smart. Watch the numbers, not all of the bad news they can possibly dig up during this pandemic makes sense with the numbers.
I have come to the decision, that the news media in regards to this pandemic, is not our friend. MOO

With weather getting warmer and thousands of bored people with too much time on their hands who have been cooped up, I'm concerned about the crime rate going up. I live close to a city with high crime rate. With the unemployment so high I just don't think it will be a good summer. I don't know how things can get any worse. There are not enough police to handle the crime we already have. I've seen people arguing in grocery stores when someone is not keeping their distance. It is absolutely insane.

plus so much is always sold out which then requires more trips to more stores to try & find the elusive items
I've been going without most of my favorites for that very reason - I refuse to expose myself more to look in other stores or go back more often
and my husband insists on doing most of the trips so I refuse to expose him more - he's already exposed at work

Everyone from killers, drug traffickers and gang members to mobsters, fraudsters and accused rapists are making a bid to get out of the clink.

They are aided by defense lawyers suing for their release, usually citing underlying health issues that make them at risk of catching the deadly disease in crowded conditions.

Uh huh, they all have underlying health issues. My 🤬🤬🤬.

The city of New York has let 300 inmates out of Riker’s Island and PUT THEM UP IN HOTELS.

INCLUDING:
Eight registered level three sex offenders, including three convicted child rapists, are said to be staying at a Holiday Inn Express in Greece, New York, according to WIVB.

I just opened up one of those transparent plastic page protectors and duck-taped it inside the bill of a baseball cap. Only took a few minutes and was easy.

A lot of this is moot unless you already had supplies on hand - or still have a well-paying job and no family to help. I don't know about you, but things don't look great for some of my family in the upcoming year. I'm worried.

I have tons of hobbies. I'm an introvert, so I don't handle stress by going outside and socializing.

But some people do. Let's try to understand. They aren't okay with digital contact, they want the physiological contact that primates often seek.

Actually the fact that absent musical instruments these are all low-cost hobbies you can order supplies for online was the point of my post. I’m talking about people wandering around the Lowe’s garden center or craft aisles at Walmart.

I am a big gardener. I love going to nurserys and garden centers. My plans are scrapped for this year. We ordered seeds instead - it cost a fraction of the cost and will take 10x the time but it’s what we have to do.

I don’t think being an extrovert is an excuse for contributing to the spread of this virus.

My business is closed bleeding money and my mother is fighting breast cancer. I’m obviously concerned about the year ahead. That’s why I want people to STAY HOME - even the extroverts - so we can get through this. I’m not sure how my post would imply otherwise.

One thing is clear to me. I much rather have those coughing and sneezing morons to have a mask on than not. At least they will be coughing and sneezing into their masks.

ITA. And it would reduce asymptomatic spread.

I like to cook, try new recipes and enjoy cookbooks - especially those with tasty looking pictures - but it’s hard to do that now when you have to ration out even the most basic foodstuffs.
Much less buy some obscure spice or use up all your eggs on one dessert.

I feel like I’m on Chopped. What can I make with a half opened bag of lentils from 2016, a freezer burned bag of frozen green beans, and a souvenir bottle of hot sauce someone got me as a gag gift 8 years ago?
