Or denial. It won’t happen to me, IDK @otto I edited my post to note our particular situation in my neighborhood cannot be attributed to poverty. Elsewhere, yes.
Otto's analogy is the best I've heard. Indeed many are thinking it's like a movie and won't happen to me. Until the chickens come home to roost that is.

So here it is in this hell hole of a holler 30 minutes from the Gulf: I went to 7 places yesterday for an essentials run. Feed & seed store—4 people no masks, no social distancing. One hardware store—numerous people, only 3 (self included) wearing masks, & at checkout someone comes within 3’ of me before I’m done. I gave him the angry mom eye & held up my hand. He looked at me like I was nuts. The sole nursery in town—everyone working had masks, it was call in & pick up but I used a piece of paper to get what I wanted, 1/2 of which was gone. Used mask & gloves. What’s with the run on basil plants? Are they the new TP? The line at the bank was so long by the time I got to the teller I had ordered 10 different bizarre hand sanitizers on my smart phone, & 2 face masks, LSU & Saints. I’m in the most insane buying mode.
The masks are for my son in VA who works for a defense contractor & is furloughed due to a pre-existing heart issue. Well Mommy found out the real issue when he called last night: major arrhythmia for months & some cardio something treatment. And my brothers have know for over 4 months. So after disowning my brothers & crying over the phone with said son, I drank an entire bottle of an inferior white wine. I’m depressed, son seriously ill but going back to work in 2 weeks, garden 2 months late, house a mess. OK sorry for the rant. I’m miserable but at least I have a massive veg garden & fruit trees I can sit in on 8 acres. But it gives me no joy. Not even the coastal cardinals, pipits, swamp canary & white wing doves singing their hearts out. Think I’m losing it. Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Oh @Tony1902 I’m so sorry! Ranting is OK. You need to talk about it. Hugs!

"The consensus forecast of 1,044 new confirmed cases per day in two weeks suggests that Georgia will see a substantial worsening of the virus’s spread as a result of reopening. The daily number of new confirmed cases is forecast to be somewhere between 579 and 2,292, with six experts indicating that an increase to 2,000 or more new cases a day is plausible."

Last one for me and I’ll see y’all next weekend
Walmart in Worcester could reopen 'in the next couple of days'
Hirsh also forecast that the “peak day” for COVID-19 cases in Worcester will be this Friday, and that the numbers would begin to recede after that.
city’s medical director says our local peak is this upcoming Friday :(
Damn. I think we’ve (locals) all been hearing the Gov saying statewide is already past that point /numbers decreasing etc so I guess ymmv If one is looking at the overall state’s stats vs what’s right outside your front door
Oh well
Hang in there everyone. Be safe and take care of yourselves. Glad to have this thread. :)

:(:( Worst as I’ve seen it so far last week at work. Tuesday almost Every bed in the Er had a positive or suspected case. From what I’m gathering our voluntary social distancing has been slipping Recently. Vehicle traffic definitely has increased noticeably (Massachusetts)
Eta we supposedly peaked April 20-27? I don’t remember. Feels like we’re still going strong here Plateau maybe ?
Eta again. Our daily city/county numbers are posted by 5/6 pm . I haven’t looked yet today . But weekend numbers don’t seem to accurately reflect anyway.

Send Off For Over 100 FEMA Ambulances Assisting New Jersey

April 14, 2020

New Jersey EMS Task Force Team Leader Mike Bascom led a contingent of members to MetLife Stadium Friday morning as part of FEMA’s deployment of 75 out-of-state ambulance teams that will assist New Jersey EMS providers in handling increased call volume due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Before giving a pep talk to the hundreds of emergency medical service professionals who had gathered in a Meadowlands staging area Friday morning, Christopher Neuwirth read off the names of “four of our own" for a moment of silence.

All four EMS responders died from complications of the coronavirus in recent weeks, state officials have said.

“We want to remember the ultimate sacrifice that they made," Neuwirth said.
He finished his remarks, then the leaders of the New Jersey EMS Task Force gave last-minute instructions to the hundreds of responders who traveled from various states to help New Jersey’s EMS squads deal with the increased call volume due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In all, 75 ambulances gathered in the Meadowlands staging area next to MetLife Stadium. As he looked at the license plates from Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland, Neuwirth marveled at how an army of responders from surrounding states answered their call.

“What you see here is our EMS brothers and sisters coming together to support each other,"

Our EMS brothers and sisters have been operating in a high-pressure environment, seven days a week, for five grueling weeks,” said Bascom. “I appreciate the support of Assistant Commissioner Neuwirth and Director Clancy in getting this assistance for our colleagues in New Jersey.”

May 1, 2020 Send Off - Thank You!

Last night, the #NJSP joined emergency personnel from across the state at
@MetLifeStadium to send off a wave of 100 EMS units that served NJ for the past two weeks. Thank you for your unwavering dedication and answering our call for assistance!

"Much like the first wave on April 23 2020, the over 100 FEMA EMS Units from across the country were given a well deserved send off as they leave our state to head back home after assisting local EMS agencies that were pushed to the brink with the unprecedented call volumes.

Fire, Police, and EMS units from across New Jersey showed up to show their support and lined the entry roads of Metlife stadium as the EMS units entered the complex for one final time. Safe travels home everyone!

Parade starts at 7:12

i'll take " people who refuse to stay inside" for $800 alex

I read about the increases in cases inVictoria - best way for an Island to survive a pandemic is to close everything except supply chain and practice sustainability. Travellers should perhaps be quarantined in gov't facilities for 21 days if the country wants to be careful and get it right. One mistake is one too many.

On the other hand, my son was sick after 2 weeks in Melbourne, claimed he was "sicker than he'd ever been in his life" and had allergy-induced bronchitis. If this is possible, he was infected in early February and left the country in mid-March. Since then he quarantined (except one frizbee game) for 14 days. He wanted an antibody test, none available. For the last 6 weeks, he carries on as though he is immune - and he has not been sick.

Multi-generational families are most at risk. That's why scientists are recognizing a racial split in risk stats. Non-Caucasians are more likely to live in multi-generational homes.

At the same time, education about transmission seems to be either missing the mark, or impossible, in multi-generational families.

Minnesota here. We drove 20 mi to my son's house to deliver a battery operated kiddie car and a bicycle that we stored through the winter. Stayed outside for maybe a half-hour. Interesting that I commented on the freeway traffic. Seemed a lot of people were driving. We adhere to the stay at home policy but grandson desperately (of course) needed this.
I noticed the same thing about TRAFFIC this afternoon. I drove 20 miles North to Ventura County to take some Omaha Steaks to my son. There was so much freeway and traffic, it was like pre-pandemic days. And it was a Sunday afternoon.

I passed a Target on my way home and there was a very long line of masked people, waiting to enter the store. I've never seen a line there in the past month and I take that freeway exit all the time. I thought it was odd.

they have already been doing this for the last month, daily totals include travelers in quarantine, they get put up in 4-5 star accommodation at no charge to them with free meals

What percent have opted in to contact tracing in Victoria at this time? I think it's a good idea for today and the next 2 years. Most countries are introducing it, and it is for the benefit of those who are unknowingly exposed.

I understand all the arguments against TraceTogether apps, but opting in does not mean opting in forever. As soon as people register a new/future cell phone ID, virus tracing ends. If cell phone ID is attached to user name and consent to use "I agree" in a government database, people are hooped into 1984 big brother.

ETA: where to quarantine was a real problem in mid-March. Relieved to hear that all countries are filling that loophole with hotels.

I have been wondering if something like that should be done in the UK. I think when rapid tests roll out would be a good time to implement that sort of thing.

But on the other hand, if there's still a significant risk of someone entering the country and testing negative, there's still a risk they might contract it in this country.

So, maybe overall cases need to come down first, keep increasing community testing and contact tracing, and then consider testing people as they enter the country, whether they are citizens/permanent residents or not?

It's unbelievable how complex this all is...I never thought of all the 'details' of such a thing when vaguely having an awareness of the risk of a pandemic flu-like illness....and of course, I never thought it would happen in my lifetime.

But I am starting to think we'll find a way to live with a 'new normal' and work out how to keep hospitalisations and deaths down as low as possible for the future.
