Interesting that her salon was targeted by the state, but that a pet grooming business was open next door.

Comparing a hair salon that works on humans, to a groomer that works on dogs? Especially when there is no existing evidence that a dog, in the rare case they may get the virus, can transmit it to a human?

Free masks now available at East Tennessee health departments

"The Knox County Health Department on Wednesday will begin to distribute free facemasks provided by the state.

Anyone who needs a mask can go to the main KCHD building located at 140 Dameron Ave during business hours. There will be signs directing visitors on where to go."

The 'people of Walmart' sure don't get it. I had to pick up an order from the tower located a few feet from the front door. Right next to the tower is the self check out section. People were packed in there like a can of sardines and maybe 2 out of 20 were wearing masks. That place is a Petri dish.

The English version of Walmart (ASDA) is apparently just as bad. I had a friend tell me it was bedlam in there last weekend - no security, no sanitising facilities, no structured queuing system, just utter madness with so many people crammed together.
More than ever, I am grateful to be able to get my groceries delivered.

"Another 3.2 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week as the coronavirus crisis sidelined 33 million workers in less than two months, the feds said Thursday.

That suggests one in five US workers tried to join the nation’s unemployment rolls in the last seven weeks ..."

I am confident the economy will recover, but it's going to be slow. People out of work will not be eager to spend money when businesses open up again, imo, but will be concerned about housing bills, food, savings....not "stuff" they can buy at the mall or dinner out at restaurants.

The unemployment insurance situation is becoming a problem for so many people. And we are not seeing MSM MSM articles about it.

This is an absolute windfall for a lot of minimum wage workers who lost their jobs. More money than they ever have had before.

Here is the problem:
1. SNAP, EBT, Medicaid, looks at assets, if a person on those programs tries to just save the money, to fix their car, whatever, that assest throws them off the programs.
2. If they are on Medicaid, this income blows them off of the program. So, to stay on the medical, they would have a potential spend down of over $1200, depending on their program, state, and benefit.

So, some people are paying off bills, buying extra items, others are purchasing new tvs, computers, phones, whatever.

I honestly believe that this was only the first wave of the Pandemic, and the subsequent job losses. I predict a lot more next quarter. And those folks will probably be higher wage workers, without that $600 a week bonus, which ends in July.

JMO.

Looks like the hair salon woman is gonna be out of jail for her birthday on mother's day. The Gov. of Tx tweeted this:

Throwing Texans in jail whose biz's shut down through no fault of their own is wrong. I am eliminating jail for violating an order, retroactive to April 2, superseding local orders. Criminals shouldn’t be released to prevent COVID-19 just to put business owners in their place.

This scares me so much / kids :(
I don’t know what the flu vaccination rate is for kids vs adults
(I only have one barely official kid-aged kid, the rest are grown) he didn’t get a flu shot this year, did last year.

I wonder if there’s another child vaccine that maybe offering them some measure of protection. IDK if that’s even remotely possible. Just a thought.

I just can’t think about this too much
:(

I'm not sure that it has been established either, but there is some strong evidence that there could be a link. It's all so new, and such a steep learning curve for the medical community. All the world will be watching for more information regarding a potential link.

In the meantime, when it comes to our children's safety, it would be prudent to act as if a link were certain. The medical community is ahead of our gov't policy makers so I pray that their warnings are not ignored. In this instance, I hope there is adequate protection in place for children, and that we are not throwing them to the wolves in our desperate attempt to reopen the economy.

On a personal note, during our zoomfest on Sunday, the two medical doctors in our family were fully aware of pediatric differences in CoV-19 cases. They believe children have been largely protected because schools and day cares are closed.

Oh yuk, Katy!
How does heated lettuce taste?
No thanks---I'll stay home and make my own.

140,000 New Yorkers will be tested for Covid-19 antibodies beginning next week, mayor says

New York City is launching its own antibody survey in partnership with BioReference to understand the spread of the coronavirus, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Thursday morning.

Up to 5,000 people will be tested per day, he said, and test results are expected within 48 hours. Up to 70,000 people will be tested within the first two weeks.

Tests will be focused on people in the general area of test sites, de Blasio said, adding initial testing sites will be located in the Morrisania neighborhood in the Bronx, East New York, Upper Manhattan, Concord, and Long Island City.

Earlier this week, the city announced a separate 140,000 antibody tests for health care workers and first responders.

US coronavirus update: Latest on cases, deaths and reopening
Thanks for this link, JG.

I've been wondering about neighborhood information, and this list of neighborhoods is likely an indication where those new cases of "stay-at-home" patients have come from. I don't know the Concord neighborhood, but the others tend toward lower-income and minority (though not exclusively). I'm thinking they are more likely to be multi-generational households and perhaps more likely to serve some of the essential jobs - so even if the patients were staying home, not everyone in their home was and they were infected that way. Speculation.

Idk, what temp completely kills the germs? I genuinely don’t know, I’m not being sarcastic.

Since Shelley Luther received a PPP loan, she should have been able to support herself, her stylists salaries, and pay her rent and utilities for 8 weeks. Since it hasn’t been 8 weeks since the first round of funding, how did she run out of that money already? Jmo

eta - I just saw in a different article that she received the funds on Sunday. So she why won't she agree to close her business? That's literally the point of the loan - to keep your employees on payroll, pay your rent, and keep your business from permanently closing.

Not the case at a huge Asda a few miles from me, thankfully. Trolleys are wiped down and hand sanitizer available. Mr Cags has been every week or two for a big shop and not seen any of the problems seen in the media, so I guess it’s down to individual stores.

Masked Heroes: Facial Coverings by Native Artists | First American Art Magazine

"In response to the rapid shuttering of art galleries and museums to help slow the spread of COVID-19, First American Art Magazine launched a call for this virtual art exhibition. The Native art community has responded to this crisis with compassion, generosity, bravery, and hope. Through Masked Heroes, we want to celebrate the resilience of Indigenous peoples and help share the beauty that Native artists have created in the face of our shared crisis."

I’ll second that...every local supermarket in my area has strict security, one in, one out...and regulation of total number of people in the store at any one time....trolley wipe down, hand sanitiser, floor spacing and route through the store clearly marked. But I guess that doesn’t make for good headlines

•Buy blank envelopes and a book of stamps to send to our parents so they can send letters and not go to the post office and stand in line.
snipped

Brilliant.

I had to go the post office once during lockdown and let's just say it was ..... unpleasant. Anything to avoid that is a good idea!
