I wonder how this recent development will affect the reopening of schools/daycare.

QUOTE="cass523, post: 16059612, member: 185449"]New York now has 73 cases of children presenting with a new pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome likely linked to COVID-19 -- and a third child has died of the condition, Gov. Cuomo said Saturday, one day after he announced the first death.

"As it turns out, these children happened to have the COVID antibodies, or be positive for COVID, but those were not the symptoms they showed when they came into the hospital system," Gov. Cuomo said Saturday.

The New York State Dept. of Health is working in partnership with the CDC to develop national criteria for other states and hospital systems to help them identify, track and respond to help children exhibiting symptoms, Gov. Cuomo said. Doctors in the state say children are not presenting with symptoms until 4 to 6 weeks after exposure to the virus.

"This is every parent's nightmare, right?" Cuomo said, adding that the state is investigating additional child deaths and will conduct more studies to better understand the illness.

After Gov. Cuomo announced the first death Friday, doctors in Westchester County said a 7-year-old boy died there this week of the new condition. Later the same day, Westchester officials clarified reporting may be too preliminary to determine whether the 7-year-old boy died from COVID-19 complications or other underlying medical issues.

3 NY Child Deaths Linked to Rare COVID-Related Inflammatory Illness, At Least 73 Sick

A 7-year-old boy from Westchester County died late last week, the county confirmed on Friday. A 5-year-old boy died earlier in the week from the same syndrome at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital in New York City. Cuomo did not give any details about the third New York child on Saturday.

This program gives dying coronavirus patients a chance to see family members one last time
The program, called the End of Life Support Navigator Program, just launched at the end of April and is available for patients with coronavirus who are receiving comfort measures only in isolation units.

Massachusetts public health officials on Saturday announced an additional 138 deaths from illness related to COVID-19, bringing the total fatalities in Massachusetts to 4,840.
The Department of Public Health also counted an additional 1,410 new cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, on Saturday. At least 76,743 Massachusetts residents have tested positive for the respiratory illness.

Marijuana companies to make pitch to governor’s reopening advisory board on Saturday
A group of cannabis industry representatives is slated to meet with Gov. Charlie Baker’s reopening advisory board on Saturday to pitch how recreational marijuana stores can reopen safely amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recreational shops have been shuttered since March 24 after being deemed non-essential by Baker. Massachusetts is the only state with legal marijuana that has shut down recreational businesses during the pandemic. Medical marijuana, however, has been deemed essential.

Stuck on cruise ships during pandemic, crews beg to go home

By ADRIANA GOMEZ LICON and GUILLERMO GARAT, Associated Press
20 hrs ago
...
MIAMI (AP) — Carolina Vásquez lost track of days and nights, unable to see the sunlight while stuck for two weeks in a windowless cruise ship cabin as a fever took hold of her body.
On the worst night of her encounter with COVID-19, the Chilean woman, a line cook on the Greg Mortimer ship, summoned the strength to take a cold shower fearing the worst: losing consciousness while isolated from others.

Vásquez, 36, and tens of thousands of other crew members have been trapped for weeks aboard dozens of cruise ships around the world — long after governments and cruise lines negotiated their passengers' disembarkation. Some have gotten ill and died; others have survived but are no longer getting paid.

Both national and local governments have stopped crews from disembarking in order to prevent new cases of COVID-19 in their territories. Some of the ships, including 20 in U.S. waters, have seen infections and deaths among the crew. But most ships have had no confirmed cases.
...
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last month that about 80,000 crew members remained on board ships off the U.S. coast after most passengers had disembarked. The Coast Guard said Friday that there were still 70,000 crew members in 102 ships either anchored near or at U.S. ports or underway in U.S. waters.

Stay close to us, drink lots of water, and write down your symptoms at least three times a day

Thank you. My fever is better today, only at 99 degrees but I called my doctor who suggested I get tested because my grown son moved back in with me after being furloughed from his job mid March. Did the test this morning and now isolating in my room until I get the results. Should be no more than 48 hrs I was told. Ugh.

Edit to add: I’ve not told my elderly parents or anyone other than my son. There is no need to needlessly worry them until I know for sure.

Yes, indeed. And my dad, who was a major road trip kind of guy, used to say after going all over the nation, that "California has everything you need." We've got the sandstone landscapes, the granite mountains, giant forests, coastal redwoods, deserts, etc., etc.

But, like him, I yearn to wander a bit. I've always wanted to visit the Canadian Rockies again, but now that looks like it will be quite the wait.

Montana and Wyoming are both amazing. And Utah never ceases to beckon, no matter how many times we go. Once we're outside of Las Vegas, from Mesquite on up through any part of Utah, it's just amazing. We really like the desert (to drive through it, it's serene) but the Los Angeles to Vegas trip really isn't that great. Of course right now, Las Vegas would be hard to visit (apparently not a lot of social distancing by the locals), but it doesn't take long to get to Utah.

Utah has some of the best social distancing measures going on, for many reasons. If you just avoid Salt Lake, you could do a trip soon.

But if you can get yourself to Yellowstone National Park sometime, you'll love it.

Meanwhile yes, I do dream of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and all the history and the leaves turning color and the little towns and churches and bridges.

Re BBM above: My father-in-law used to say that about Oregon. He had no desire to leave the state. (IMO Oregon could use more winter sunshine.) We live in NC, which does have a lot of winter sunshine. The summers are another story though, hot and humid.

I am dreaming of traveling to Oregon, where we love to visit the coast as well as relatives; to New England including Vermont (where our son lives) and the beautiful Maine coast; and to the midwest to visit my relatives. I doubt we will do any more overseas travel.

Stanford forecast shows Indiana just rolling from wave 1 to wave 2.........
Depending on the level of herd immunity so far, peak of wave 2 is forecast at the following if only open at 50% of normal....

Low immunity levels. 180 deaths per million people/ day
High immunity levels. 50 deaths per million

7 million population
Low. Immunity 180 x 7 = 1,260 deaths per day
High immunity 50 x 7 = 350 deaths per day

Extended Results COVID-19

So wave 2 should be almost 10X worse than than wave 1. I may have overestimated the math. Jmo

Info from Virologist Peter Piot, director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, fell ill with COVID-19 in mid-March. An excellent read. Below is one takeaway that's frightening. Maybe those who forego masks should read this.

"Many people think COVID-19 kills 1% of patients, and the rest get away with some flulike symptoms. But the story gets more complicated. Many people will be left with chronic kidney and heart problems. Even their neural system is disrupted. There will be hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, possibly more, who will need treatments such as renal dialysis for the rest of their lives."

Is this the ship where some of the people began a hunger strike yesterday? I think it is.

It's very disturbing that they are unable to get sun, given that each day they are locked up, their vitamin D levels are dropping.

The way things are working in the US right now, I doubt we'll make it a priority. I think this one is a Royal Caribbean ship. Despiccable behavior on the part of whatever corporation this is.

And the way that some corporate entities are taking the money and running (via bankruptcy) is just as disgusting.

Yes, I worry about a number of posters who suddenly went missing and keep hoping they will show up again here with an update.

Hi everyone
I’m late to the bullet train again, but might I also suggest ear buds? MrTony has the long standing ingrained concept from med school: never ever put your fingers in your eyes, mouth, nose, ears, umbilical thingy & any other, well, those other places of entry/exit. I found my goggles at the hardware store.
Back to planting and lurking. Really, this is THE best place for information. Xoxo to all of you. Sorry for the shout.;/

Yay. My tax refund has been approved and will be deposited into my bank account this week. My stimulus payment is still in limbo. I have been checking the IRS website every day, and was shocked to see my status had changed from received to approved.
Just received our stimulus check yesterday.

You might not want to hear this, but I've been to every state. Young and restless one. (That was years ago before kids and grandkids.)
Louisiana (especially Acadiana region) has the best food, oak trees, and music. There’s always a festival.

I found three pairs  two are not the “fitted tight against the face style” like that. More like wrap around glasses. One pair of legit Goggles. Sorta heavy big and bulky. Might be too much.
I’ll have to weigh my options based on fit and fogging up with mask usage. Currently scanning amazon as well for something
The onion goggles work great...but they don’t fit with glasses.

I'm not sure if this is COVID19 related, maybe someone can chime in. Hair salons are allowed to open on 5/18 in my area. I booked an appointment online with the same hair salon I've been going to for over a year. I then got an email with a Release Form asking for some medical history.

Here is what they asked for:

Current medications
Surgery in last 6 months?
List all allergies
Medications taken in last 6 months

They also asked on their form what products you currently use and other questions related to hair, waxing, etc. I have never had to provide medical information to a hair salon. I'm a little taken aback by this. Has anyone had a salon ask for this type of information? TIA
