I have not seen one press conference that actually discusses mental health and suicide in the United States in a thoughtful manner. Or seen any news articles that have actual data and evidence.

The real question is, who wouldn't have mental health issues right now? And for many of us working in stressful environments, it is even more escalated.

I can provide links to Virginia Governors first few pressers, he focused on mental health and repeatedly encouraged everyone to walk in the park. Well, that changed when the Park Service complained about folks pooping in the parks and the media coverage of crowds gathering.

Haven't heard much from him on MH recently...

Moo.. Glad to provide the links.

Respectfully. These are the words:
President Trump called houses of worship “essential services” and told governors to let them open “right now.”
“I call upon governors to allow our churches and places of worship to open right now,” he said. “If there’s any question, they’re going to have to call me but they’re not going to be successful in that call.”

Coronavirus Live Updates: Trump Calls Houses of Worship ‘Essential Services’ and Urges Reopening

I just happened to be reading some history of our church, and noted that in 1918, the congregation was unsure whether or not they should cancel church because of the "illness". They decided that they would ask the local medical doctor and abide by his recommendation. There were no more entries in the church records for the rest of that year, so I expect that church was suspended.

It's probably not much different these days. Most churches will respond in intelligent, well-informed ways after seeking proper advice. But, there will be some that will leave us shaking our heads.

I've just been reading about "lived density". We talk a lot about death rate per population, and it's true that population density plays a part in the spread of the virus. What is more accurate however, is measuring a country's density in terms of areas in which people actually live. So, as an example, Australia and Canada have low population density, but their lived density is much higher because something like 90% of the people live in 10% of the space. Likewise, Spain is pretty empty in the middle so their density looks lower, but the 80% of people in built up coastal resorts don't experience that.

I found a chart (linked below) which seems to correspond lived density with the worst affected European countries. Stacks up. I imagine looking at lived density per US state would show similar patterns. I've mentioned Oregon before as being the closest state in size to the UK. Oregon has a population of 4.2million, the UK has 15 times as many people crammed into the same space. England fares even worse on its own - approx the size of Alabama we take up about half the land area of the UK but have 55 million inhabitants, while the other half (Wales, NI & Scotland) have only 12 million between them.

There's a Better Way to Measure Population Density - CityLab

Anyway I'm rambling because it's late, and my eyes hurt because I've had a crappy sad old day and I cried with mascara on and now they're gritty. So it's goodnight from me. Hoping to feel more positive about the world tomorrow.
Awww Cagz get some sleep. Tomorrow will be a better day. Sending you a big ole hug. Sleep well.

Yes, the covid roller coaster can be a rough ride at times. I never knew I had such a wide range of emotions.

Several woman friends and I got together this morning and rode our bikes around the neighborhood (wearing masks and social distancing). We honked our horns, rang our bike bells. Lots of folks came out to say hello or join us on our ride. Because most of us have covid-hair due to four months without haircuts, etc. , we did our hair up in tiny scrunchy pony tails all over our heads. Lots of silly fun and a lot of laughs.

I did the same last night with a core group of friends. We usually have dinner and play cards once a month, 12 of us, but had not seen each other since February. Last night we met in one of the girl’s backyard, everyone bringing their own dinner and wine/wine glasses. There were only 7 of us able to attend, all wearing masks and social distancing. It was a much needed boost to my spirits.

Neighbour was selling off his woodworking tools from his backyard shop pre-covid. A few days ago he had a call from somebody out of town wanting to come and see what he had. He said no due to covid. Person stated they were not worried about getting it and neither should he. God would protect them.

I went to get my snow tires off and the summer tires on today ... I know, I know, what's the rush? Covid protocol was in place. First I had to show proof that I had an appointment to get through the road block.

The garage doesn't have a waiting room any more. Customers stay behind their wheel since mechanics do not get into your car. I had a great time, driving onto the hoist and going up, up, up. With all the windows down, I could enjoy the smell of fresh tires and hear the stupefying garage music. Before I finished reading a chapter, I came back down, down, down. It was a fun adventure.

I'm to come back after putting on 100 kms. That could be next fall when it's time to put the snows back on.

My next outing is in just three weeks, to the annual hazardous waste collection day. I'll put my jar of batteries in the trunk and the nice folks at the collection will gather them right out of the trunk and reclaim or recycle, or whatever it is they do with the stuff. This will be great fun. The whole village lines up for this event. The press will likely be there.
HA! I love love love a sense of humor! Especially in these times my friend! :D

So happy to hear you had some girl time. Gatherings can happen exactly how you describe. It's so important to stay connected. For those of us entering warmer weather it can be done.

https://news.yahoo.com/18-old-arizona-woman-visiting-194525316.htm

An Arizona woman visiting Hawaii was arrested after allegedly violating the state's mandatory order that tourists and returning residents self-isolate for 14 days.

Alyza Alder, 18, of Gilbert, was taken into custody on Wednesday at a fast-food restaurant in Laie where she was working, according to a press release from the governor's office.

Alder arrived in O‘ahu on May 6 and days later began posting photos of herself at beaches in Laie and Hauula. Investigators said that during the time she should have been under quarantine, Alder got a job at a local restaurant.
Me: Fair or not fair???

Which is why my home state has had a couple of days with zero deaths.

I'm really confused about what you think is not fair? Is it a joke about how that 18 year old is probably feeling? That's how I took it.

"Less than two-thirds of Americans are "very" or "somewhat" interested in getting a COVID-19 vaccine if one becomes available, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Thursday. About a quarter of those surveyed had little or no interest in taking a vaccine, Reuters reported, and more than 40% said the vaccine could be riskier than the disease."

Poll finds many Americans wary of taking coronavirus vaccine: report
I told one friend who thinks Bill Gates will be microchipping us through the COVID vaccine and so will refuse the vaccine that I appreciate his sacrifice- I’ll take his vaccine.

Scary that Alder took a job at a restaurant. Great way to spread it to many if she was infected.

Remember how I said I would still be wearing gloves and disinfecting my groceries? Yup, still doing that.

The CDC says it has not changed its guidelines on the spread of coronavirus on contaminated surfaces. Recent news reports suggested otherwise.

The virus doesn't spread easily on surfaces, the agency says, but people should still disinfect dirty surfaces.

I think a lot of churches will. But not sure about "most." A lot of very large churches (in terms of weekly attendance) do not want to exercise as much common sense or pay attention to science. At least, where I live and I think it's probably true elsewhere

That's what's going on in parts of California. I have no objection to it, I just hope people are aware of the risks.

I don't doubt it. What I have a problem with is the almost rehearsed version that keeps mentioning "all of these mental problems and suicides", without actually having data to refer to.

And furthermore, if people in the United States are having mental health issues, suicide, why is THE only answer to this "Everyone just needs to go back to work". Is that a solution? Why isn't there an alternative presented by people who keep talking about suicide and mental health issues? Like, "If you need help, please go to this website, call Suicide Helpline". No, the mantra is, if everyone goes back to work, magically everything is solved...

Sorry, that seems trite and actually trivializes mental health issues and suicide.
Illinois had a hotline, multiple types of hotlines, actually, from the beginning because Pritzker knew this was going to take a toll on mental health.

This is interesting. Mink are extensively farmed in China, as well. Mink are part of the weasel family, as are civet cats implicated in the SARS outbreak in 2002.

SARS-CoV2 infection in farmed mink, Netherlands, April 2020

"In April 2020, respiratory disease and increased mortality were observed in farmed mink on two farms in the Netherlands. In both farms, at least one worker had been found positive for SARS-CoV-2. Necropsies of the mink revealed interstitial pneumonia, and organ and swab samples tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA by qPCR. Variations in viral genomes point at between-mink transmission on the farms and lack of infection link between the farms. Inhalable dust in the mink houses contained viral RNA, indicating possible exposure of workers."
My personal belief is that as long as we continue to cause unnecessary suffering to other beings on the scale that we do, we will be hit with viruses like this. It will never be enough death, though, for most people to see the light.

I get what your saying Rods - I looked into it further in another article and it says:

HAWAII COVID-19 JOINT INFORMATION CENTER NEWS RELEASE-ARIZONA VISITOR ARRESTED FOR QUARANTINE VIOLATION, MAY 21, 2020
Posted on May 21, 2020 in Latest News

(Honolulu) – Wednesday afternoon, Special Agents from the Investigation Division of the Dept. of the Attorney General arrested an 18-year-old woman on charges of violating the State’s mandatory 14-day-quarantine rule and for unsworn falsification to authority.

Alyza Alder, of Gilbert, AZ, was taken into custody at a fast food restaurant in Laie, after a citizen notified authorities that she was allegedly in violation of emergency rules. The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority assisted law enforcement on this case.

Alder arrived on O‘ahu on May 6 and allegedly began posting photos of herself swimming off beaches in Lāʻie and Hau‘ula between May 8 and yesterday. Investigators say while she still should have been under quarantine, she took employment at the restaurant. She has been booked and charged and her bail is set at $2,000.

State Attorney General Clare Connors reiterated, “We are asking everyone – returning residents and visitors – to abide by our state’s 14-day self-quarantine order. The 14-day self-quarantine rules protect everyone’s health and safety. As we’ve said before, if you come to Hawai‘i with the expectation that you can ignore the self-quarantine order, you very likely will be reported, arrested and end up in jail facing hefty fines. All of us must do our part to protect ourselves, our families, friends and guests.”

Thank you!

Hawaii has real antipathy toward imported diseases. For good reason. 18 year old posting pictures of self breaking quarantine?

Why am I not shocked?
