We can - although where I live, I can't figure out how to get it done. County Public Health has them, but right now only has a set-up for children to make an appointment. My primary care doctor says they have not been able to get enough of the MMR vaccine to offer to adults, either.

This was some time ago. I'm not optimistic but I will try and persist more. I also need the shingles vaccine, and it's not at CVS or Ralph's the way it usually is - maybe issues to do with distancing and CoVid? No idea.

This chart tells how much each country is accessed, and have they paid, or are the amounts still outstanding.

https://www.who.int/about/finances-accountability/funding/AC_Status_Report_2020.pdf

So, it looks like the United States is paying more than double of any other country. Including China and Japan, who combined do not have the same fee as the United States.

Based on this table, it doesn't surprise me that a businessman would conclude that this is a bad deal for the United States.

Does anyone think that the Coronavirus and now subsequent current civil unrest will spike the COVID19 cases again?

Yes, absolutely.

I commented about this in the “unrest thread” here today.

Here is the comment:
All I can think about is how this is further spreading the coronavirus, on top of all this mess: people pulling their masks down, shouting in cops’ faces and all around them, close contact, often physical....

I see all this and I see the Philadelphia parade of 1918 which hugely facilitated the spread of the 1918 flu.

And here I was tired of the endless death count from the virus. Now, we have a new death count...wow.

I guess that I am seriously not understanding the "logic". People were arrested for encouraging church attendance, but demonstrations are okay.

So all these protests around the country, different cities....

Think about Philadelphia and 1918. That was one city and a “parade”.

This is many cities plus shouting, contact, etc. etc.

No words right now.

Yes, I believe that a spike is inevitable.

Just listen to the live streams. Hundreds of people coughing, hacking, sneezing, screaming, and yelling. Nonstop.

Based on this table, it doesn't surprise me that a businessman would conclude that this is a bad deal for the United States.

Of course, Japan has a population of just 1/3 that of the US, so one would expect that their assessment would reflect that. And who knows what the assessment for China is based on.

The US is assessed about $58M per year, which is not a large expense for a wealthy nation. However, what might interest you is that the US 2020 dues were not paid, neither were 2019, and it seems to me that there were dues outstanding from 2018, and possibly farther back than that.

So what's really going on?

This does not include the voluntary additional contributions that the US made either, which took their contributions to $400m IIRC or the contributions from people like Gates and Buffet.

We heard earlier this year that Trump was withholding funding, so that must be the 2019 funding. 2020 isn't over yet but I guess he is not going to pay that either. If he gets the coronavirus investigation he wants, maybe that would change. MOO.

ETA I notice that two thirds of the total 2020 contributions have not been paid but we (the UK) have paid ours. :)

AAMC Statement on U.S. Withdrawal from World Health Organization

AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) Chief Scientific Officer Ross McKinney, Jr., MD, issued the following statement on President Trump’s announcement to end the United States’ relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO):

“The AAMC is extremely disappointed in the president’s decision to withdraw the United States from the WHO. In the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, countries of the world should be working together to improve the health of all people. This decision is counter to that goal.

Since its foundation in 1948, the WHO has been at the center of international efforts to fight for better health, and the United States has been a key partner in the organization and its success.

The president’s decision to leave the WHO is very troubling, in both the short- and long-terms, and we hope the decision is soon reversed. The world needs a collaborative effort now, more than ever, to resolve our ongoing crisis and prepare for future global health emergencies.”

i just cannot fathom how terrible this is. We need to be part of THIS WORLD---> pandemics, climate change, international research, trade and cooperation. As the AAMC says, this must be reversed.

The mystery of 'silent spreaders'

Interesting article about "super spreaders" without symptoms. Singapore's contact tracking in the church was amazing, but frightening to know someone caught it from a chair hours later.

I have never forgotten about this church service and how Singapore traced and tracked. Really amazing, eh?
You know, I have heard the UK has only started this work--but at least, as a country.

There is nothing but a mess here in the US. I have tried to keep track of programs in my state where I might be able to volunteer, or at least really learn something about. I have seen "job descriptions" in NJ, and MA. Florida is cooking the death books, and has no forward thinking trace and track programs going.

Florida forced medical examiners to stop reporting death results, and now we know why

The one thing we could do to help with a second wave, or a next pandemic is to learn how to do what Singapore, Australia and others have been able to do.

It just makes me so angry, when people say "well, ya know, Americans just won't stand for that" Says who? I want a safer America, and I don't want the whole world thinking i am of cowboy mentality.

The seriousness of this whole few months has been forgotten.

This is a really interesting article and confirms what we have all thought about it being in the UK before January.

Could Covid-19 have reached the UK earlier than thought?

"A day before the first confirmed fatality from coronavirus outside mainland China was reported on 2 February this year, the death of the influential guitarist and musician Andy Gill was announced. The 64-year-old, who fronted the post-punk band Gang of Four, died of pneumonia after two weeks in St Thomas’ hospital in London.

The trajectory of Gill’s illness, which took medics looking after him in January by surprise, is now familiar – sudden deterioration, low oxygen levels and organ failure. He had fallen sick after his band returned from a trip to China in late November. A short time later, his 26-year-old tour manager was taken to hospital in Leeds with a severe respiratory infection.

As images started rolling in of wards in China and then Italy overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients, Gill’s widow Catherine Mayer – an author and co-founder of the Women’s Equality party – couldn’t shake the suspicion that her partner of nearly 30 years may have been an early victim of the virus."

Continued at link.

So it is very likely it could have been here as early as November.
