Hey all. Been away for a while because I broke my ankle.

The way 2020 is going, I don't think I ever want to leave my house again.
The county next to mine reported an 80 percent increase in virus cases for the past two weeks. That is super scary.
State officials monitoring COVID-19 spike Morgan County

The news keeps showing local protests and the protestors are standing right next to each other.

My fear and anxiety just keep on escalating.

The Twilight Zone continues.

Hi Kensie - so sorry to hear about your ankle. And even more sad to hear about your fear and anxiety. I think most of us have gone through cycles of this.

Yes, the protestors are out standing next to each other and shouting and running about. It's possible some of them will infect each other. It looks like Memorial Day activities have caused upticks in various places.

But the overall strategy each of us must take remains the same. Get yourself a comfortable mask. Even a surgical mask is better than no mask, but if I were wearing a surgical mask, I'd probably also wear a face shield and/or a neck gaiter. I am in a high risk category due to age and possessing a particular gene that is associated with greater mortality from CoVid. Still, I really don't want to get any more irrational about my fears than I already am!

Something like this:

Bucket Hat Non-Detachable Face Shield

in addition to a mask, of course. 3M N95 filters are available on Amazon and I got masks that have a pocket to insert one (plus two layers of fabric, outside layer is fairly waterproof). While the virus is itself very tiny, it needs water molecules to transport itself very far, and you need to get a pretty good dose of virus to get the disease (more than 1-2 virions).

The forum on mask-making and the research of @JaneEyre gave me hope. It took a while for everything to arrive. I had an uncomfortable N95 mask that I constantly fiddled with and felt like I couldn't breathe. SO, my new system is in place. Then, I research where I'm going. I don't know what I'd do if my workplace were lax.

People on this forum (and on other forums, like TripAdvisor) have been so helpful to me in reducing anxiety. My main problem right now is not exploding at people wearing their masks on their necks and I'm very angry at US airlines for not enforcing mask rules - but glad to know of it.

ANYWAY, those protesting people are infecting each other - and then their families and possibly, coworkers. Are you in a vulnerable workplace? Because if so, I suggest wearing the above costume (get a crazy looking neck gaiter and practice a steely-eyed glare in the mirror). Increase social distancing to 10 feet. Ask for permission to come to work earlier or later than others. Stay out of shared hallways.

If you share more details about your situation, there are many WSers who will have specific advice and hopefully, that will help with the anxiety (I know that it does with mine - I have to keep reminding myself that I have few reasons to go outside my current, relatively safe bubble). If there are protests right before school starts and I'm going back to the classroom, I'll probably take a leave until 30 days has passed from the protest dates. But the protest situation in your area will calm down or come in cycles. 30 days is an extremely conservative, probably unnecessary time period - but we each can make that decision for ourselves. Your employer has an obligation to accommodate you reasonably (such as giving you an office with a door).

And if you are outside and embarrassed to wear face shield, there actually cool looking sun visors that will serve the same purpose you can purchase on-line. Same goes for goggles-if you are too embarrassed to wear goggles, there are nice looking sunglasses you could purchase.

These are more protective. Are they also more breathable I wonder?

DH and I walked in a march for solidarity this morning, in an organized event in our smallish town, with police, local politicians and many citizens, masks and social distancing required. Something transcendental about shouting "I can't breathe", while wearing a mask and literally having difficulty breathing.

They come and they go. If you want to buy, you have to check often. Amazon itself isn't selling these masks (they prioritized them for health care professionals). But various vendors do every now and then.

The valved kind is breathable, but it protects you and not other people, since your exhaled air isn't filtered. I have a KN95 mask that are not hard to breathe through, but a lot of these are counterfeit, so very well could be not up to N95 standard.

Daycare facilities are starting to reopen, but with limited openings. In order to accommodate the new requirements - you only get 2-3 days per week. So who is going to take care of the children for the other days of the week?

Companies expect you to be available Monday - Friday at your regular contracted hours of 8-5 while you are working from home. A lot of households have both parents working a full time job.

Managers have been sympathetic for the last 3 months but it not possible to continue to meet employers standards without full time daycare.

Is then when you ask your neighbor? Grandparents?

Once they enter daycare, it opens up that circle even further and increases the risk.
Does that mean grandparents can no longer visit after they start daycare or school?

How is this going to be sustainable for families for months?

I’ve been checking Amazon frequently and haven’t seen them. I will keep watching and hoping!

Global cases of the novel coronavirus topped 7 million on Saturday, as case numbers surge in Brazil and India, according to a Reuters tally.

About 30% of those cases, or 2 million infections, are in the United States. Latin America has the second-largest outbreak with over 15% of cases.

Globally, deaths from the novel coronavirus are approaching 400,000.

The United States accounts for about one-quarter of all fatalities but deaths in South America are rapidly rising.

Depending on how much you want to spend, there 20 R95s being offered right now.
"Now this question can be answered and understood. Of course, the simplest thing to do is use an R95 even when there are no oil-based particles present. Why? Because it does everything the N95 does, plus oil-based particles. Generally, however, R95 respirators are more expensive."

Many of the coronavirus' most mysterious and dangerous symptoms have one thing in common: blood clots. This isn't solely a respiratory infection.

Many of the coronavirus' most mysterious and dangerous symptoms have one thing in common: blood clots. This isn't solely a respiratory infection.

  • Scientists and doctors are increasingly reporting coronavirus symptoms related to blood clots.
  • Blood-vessel-related complications have manifested in coronavirus patients' legs, lungs, hearts, brains, and skin.
  • Doctors still aren't sure how or why the virus triggers excessive clotting, but they're looking to treat these symptoms with blood-thinners and clot-busting drugs.
Some of the most dangerous and least understood symptoms - from strokes to pulmonary embolisms to "COVID toes" - have been tied to excessive blood clotting.

Clots form when blood thickens, hindering flow through a vein. They usually happen in legs or arms, but clots can also move to the lungs, heart, or brain. In the most serious cases, clots can be fatal, leading to strokes, heart attacks, pulmonary embolisms, and more.

Doctors treating coronavirus patients are seeing blood clots cause kidney failure, heart inflammation, and even immune system complications.

In one high-profile New York case, a blood clot forced doctors to amputate Broadway actor Nick Cordero's leg. After he was hospitalized with COVID-19, Cordero started experiencing clotting issues in his right foot. Doctors put him on blood thinners, but that affected his blood pressure and caused intestinal bleeding. Eventually, doctors had to amputate.

Just gorgeous:
The Funniest Quarantine Dog Memes

A big takeaway from the quarantine is the realization that we are not isolated, that we are connected to each other in ways we may not have thought of before. And we know that the quarantine is for the greater good. We have a responsibility to keep everyone safe, especially those who take care of us like healthcare workers. We love these three adorable pups and the reminder that we must think of each other and the world we all share: Let's stick together.

When we look back on these times, we will remember all of the new catchphrases that were a part of the quarantine — like social distancing and shelter in place. It's actually pretty amazing how quickly we have added these to our vocabulary. And we've even made up acronyms, like SIP. Do you remember when you first heard someone say that? (Probably in a Zoom meeting). But you didn't even think twice. It was an instant understanding of what they were saying.

Good thing we don't really have to social distance from our dogs!

In Sweden, people with coronavirus symptoms say getting a test is nearly impossible — and it affects their ability to get medical care

In Sweden, people with coronavirus symptoms say getting a test is nearly impossible — and it affects their ability to get medical care

  • Sweden lags beyond much of the world in its coronavirus testing rate.
  • Some residents with coronavirus symptoms say they can't get tested - and without a test, they're not able to receive proper care.
  • Some Swedish residents say the lack of testing is reflective of a general attitude that the virus isn't a serious threat.
Unlike other countries in Europe, Sweden opted not to impose a nationwide lockdown. Instead, it asked citizens to exercise social responsibility by maintaining a safe distance from one another and isolating if they felt sick. But the nation lags beyond most of the world in terms of coronavirus testing rates, making it hard to determine the full scale of its outbreak.

Sweden is currently administering around 27 tests per 1,000 people. That's far less than nearby Iceland and Denmark, which are administering 180 tests and 94 tests per 1,000 people, respectively. Even the US, which struggled with early delays in getting diagnostic tests distributed and available, is testing around 56 out of every 1,000 people.

Public-health experts agree that widespread testing is critical to know whether an outbreak is contained.
...
On May 19, Sweden announced that it would expand testing to include those with mild symptoms. As of May 8, about 1,000 people were being tested in Stockholm per day, according to TheLocal.se, an English-language news service for Sweden. By comparison, New York City was conducting around 20,000 daily tests as of May 17.

Race, class and CoVid - notes and thoughts from a researcher.

Good article on how CoVid attacks epithelial cells and why some patients die well after the respiratory symptoms are gone. It also suggests treatments at the end for the vulnerable, including statins.

US Billionaires gain 19% more after Corona lockdown

At least 586 healthcare workers have died fighting CoVid.

The real number of healthcare worker deaths is thought to be slightly over 600, in other sources.

The majority of Canadians want to keep border closed with the US. (Editorial comment: Canadians are a sensible people).

UK Coronavirus deaths pass 40,000, double that once considered "a good outcome." This number may not include nursing home deaths, is my understanding. I'm sure someone else knows. Rate-wise, this is 600 deaths per million of UK population (US has 330 per million, Belgium has 800 and is the highest rate in the world).

US still has 20,000 new cases per day and remains at a rolling average of about 1000 deaths per day, 30,000 per month. Arizona spike in numbers is in some of the hottest parts of the state (109°F in some places). Of course, this probably means that people are staying indoors with lots of A/C and even if just in essential jobs, it's significant. I don't know if Arizona has had large protests. Hospitals nearing 100% capacity in Arizona. That was yesterday. The length of hospital stay per CoVid patient is very long, compared to almost any other common condition or illness, so let's hope that AZ gets help. The very hot weather makes tent hospitals impossible.

Black Lives Matter affiliate spent thousands of dollars on masks for peaceful protesters, only to have them confiscated by federal authorities. No word if there was a judicial process for that. I cannot imagine what code or law allows for this kind of thing.

Almost 40% of Americans have gargled with bleach or otherwise used bleach in a dangerous manner (washing food). Pure bleach on food is not a good practice, anywhere. In theory, if the food is going to be cooked, the bleach should evaporate, but seriously, be careful with bleach (and ammonia based) products.

Fox News still staying out of their offices amid Corona fears. Why not? Keep people safe. If it's working from a distance, keep it at a distance.

Good news: US CoVid tests passed the half million daily mark yesterday.

There are 3M N95 masks for sale on Amazon now? That’s good news!

I'm not sure they have masks (they say they do) but they do have the filters. I got mine yesterday. It's a pack of 10, I cut them to fit the pocket in the style of mask that has a pocket (those are everywhere - I got mine from a company that specializes in products for cancer patients and prides itself on its sterile conditions). www.headcovers.com

It takes about 2 weeks for them arrive - there are others on Etsy and elsewhere that come more quickly. I liked that they used an outer moisture proof barrier and have easy, adjustable ear straps.

I got N95 masks from a surfing shop that is now apparently sold out, but they are fairly uncomfortable I think if the 3M N95 filter plus cloth mask feels unsafe, adding a surgical mask underneath would seal the deal.

If only everyone would wear even a simple mask, it would help all of us.

Amazon does have a mask that claims to filter out more than 95% of tiny particles:

https://smile.amazon.com/10PCS-5-La...ild=1&keywords=N95+mask&qid=1591475463&sr=8-3

I posted a graph, which now I can't find, that showed that surgical masks, alone, filter about 75-80% of Cv-sized particles, not enough to be working all day in a hospital, but pretty good for most of us - especially if worn with a 3 layer cloth mask. But adding the 3M N95 seems pretty bomb-proof (unless someone sneezes right in my face then all bets off and I'll probably be in jail).

I don't see any labels on those that would suggest they are legit KN95s. One of the images shows some labeling which is too small for me to read, but the others show masks without any labels. I am sure they are still usable, but I don't think they are legit (with proper approvals). Another clue is that seller is not even calling these masks KN95.

I wish someone could explain to me how this works. How is it that the inhale is filtered while the exhale isn’t? I have a reusable mask like this, but I still don’t understand the how.
