Is there no Tulsa Official who could cancel this rally?
I guess the venue has been booked and paid for in advance. Obviously no lockdown in Tulsa I guess. So what grounds would Public Health or anyone cite?

This is the link for the Phases for reopening. Tulsa has been in Phase 3 since early June.

Trump unveils plan to reopen states in phases

Under phase three, states which are still seeing a downward trend of symptoms and cases can allow "public interactions" with physical distancing and the unrestricted staffing of worksites. Visits to care homes and hospitals can resume and bars can increase their standing room capacity.

Some regions could begin returning to normal after a month-long evaluation period, at the earliest, according to the document.

In places where there are more infections or where rates begin to rise, it could take longer.

The co-ordinator of the White House coronavirus task force, Dr Deborah Birx, told Thursday's briefing that as states worked through the three phases, they could allow for more and more employees to return to work in increments.

Phase three would be the "new normal", she said, and would still include suggestions that vulnerable people should avoid crowded spaces

42,000 cruise ship workers still trapped at sea

“At the start of the pandemic, the Bahamas, which serves as the flag state for many cruise ships, rejected requests to take passengers in and later, cruise ship workers.”

“According to the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), the Bahamas government collected $54.2 million from cruise lines in 2018.”

“The U.S. Coast Guard, overwhelmed by dozens of medical evacuations for crew with COVID-19, told ships to seek medical help for crew members from their flag states instead. The Bahamas said it couldn’t help.”

'What about us?': Filipino cruise crews struggle to get home

“The Philippines allowed some cruise ships to anchor at the Manila Bay as a way to facilitate the return of its nationals, who make up about a third of the industry’s global seagoing crew.

But the repatriation en masse of other Filipino workers from all over the world caught the government off-guard, and resources crumbled under the weight of testing tens of thousands of returnees.”

Coronavirus In Oklahoma: The Latest

Lot of info at the link.

In Another New High, Oklahoma Reports 450 New Coronavirus Cases
Updated June 18 at 4:53 p.m.

Oklahoma health officials report 450 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed on Thursday, representing another new high in single-day infections. The data was released late Thursday afternoon, after a significant delay the Oklahoma State Department of Health classified as "technical difficulties."

Two more Oklahomans have died due to COVID-19, increasing the state's death toll to 366. No details were released on the deaths.

The 450 case increase since Tuesday means the total positive cases of the coronavirus in the state now stand at 9,354. That's a five percent increase in total reported cases.

Oklahoma has totaled 1,728 new cases of the coronavirus in the past seven days, an average of 247 per day.

Oklahoma has seen 2,848 new coronavirus cases so far this month. That's 103% of the number of cases the state saw in May (2,758) and 98% of the number of cases it saw in April (2,899).

7,071 people — more than 75 percent of the total cases — have since been classified as having recovered from the virus. 197 Oklahomans are currently hospitalized as either confirmed positive COVID-19 cases or under investigation for the virus.

There are 1,917 active cases in the state.

Trump Campaign Rally In Tulsa Will Proceed As Planned
Updated June 17 at 6:23 p.m.

In a Wednesday press conference meant to tout Oklahoma’s dispersal of federal COVID-19 relief funds, Governor Kevin Stitt ended up answering questions about President Donald Trump’s Saturday rally in Tulsa and a recent uptick in coronavirus cases.

Despite the risks, the campaign rally and the state’s reopening are slated to continue as scheduled.

State Health Department interim commissioner Lance Frye declined to say if the rally was a good idea. But he said if there is an uptick in cases, Oklahoma will be ready to respond.

Stitt said that those who are concerned about the rally in Tulsa should simply stay away.

"We’re a free society. And you’re free to stay home. And I want people to protect their family," Stitt said. "If they don’t want to go to the rally, they shouldn’t."

The rally is occurring despite five straight days of triple-digit increases in cases of the coronavirus. Stitt said more than half of the recent rise in cases can be attributed to people under 35, who are less likely to be hospitalized or die because of the virus.

Frye said there is no plan to slow the reopening process and an uptick was expected as the state instituted its reopening plan.

Stitt also said that he will be traveling to The White House to meet with Trump before Saturday's rally and will be tested for COVID-19 before making the trip. Stitt will introduce the President at the rally, but said he's unsure if he'll wear a mask.

Stitt also said a plan to move the rally to an outdoor venue has been abandoned and he's asking Trump to no longer visit the Greenwood District because Secret Service security protocols would disrupt planned Juneteenth celebrations.

During the press conference, Stitt announced more than 60 cities and counties have requested $7.5 million in reimbursement funds for operating expenses related to COVID-19.

Stitt said the state has already fulfilled 30 percent of those requests. Thosee 21 cities and counties have received a combined total of $2.1 million for personal protective equipment, payroll expenses, telework capability improvements, public safety measures, disinfection of public areas, maintaining prisons and jails, and more.

"Help is on the way to Oklahoma’s cities and counties whose services have been impacted by the presence of COVID-19," Stitt said. "[The funds have] made government more agile for adapting its workforce and services, to include purchasing critical personal protective equipment and enhancing sanitation of public areas or communal facilities."

Oklahoma will again take reimbursement requests from July 1 to July 10. Stitt said he expects requests to at least double in July. Cities and counties can register with the state to submit a request here.

Judge Denies Request To Force Coronavirus Safety Measures At Trump's Tulsa Rally
Updated June 17 at 11:45 a.m.

A group of Tulsa, Okla., residents, businesses and nonprofits tried to force event organizers to enforce social distancing protocols for this weekend's upcoming campaign rally for President Trump. In a lawsuit, they said the rally, which is to take place at an indoor arena, could act as a superspreader event for the coronavirus.

But a Tulsa judge rejected their effort Tuesday, as Public Radio Tulsa reported.

The lawsuit said the event, as it is currently planned, "will endanger not only the health of the guests in attendance ... but the entire Tulsa community and any community to which guests may afterward travel."

The rally is scheduled to take place at the BOK Center, which is run by ASM Global and has 19,000 seats.

The plaintiffs said that ASM Global does not have adequate safeguards in place.

"If ASM Global moves forward with the event without adequate review, planning, training, protective equipment, and safeguards, cases of COVID-19 — and the unavoidable attendant deaths — will rise," the lawsuit said.

I believe we can discuss the effects on Covid we believe will happen from the protests, (the possible uptick in cases) but not the protests themselves. Similar to discussing the possible effect of an indoor rally with masks, sanitisers and Covid waivers but not the rally or the politics itself. I don't think the OP was claiming to have not heard of the protest dangers, but was claiming not to have heard condemnation of the protests due to Covid. Two different things IMO.

Personally, I don't see any difference between 20,000 at a one off rally and 20,000 travelling on the London underground per day. Precautions to be taken or risk getting Covid. The protests were similar but went on against the rules. To my knowledge the rally will not be against any local rules but am happy to be corrected on that.

UBM - this is what I was addressing, thanks for repeating it though.

So there lining up on Thursday for a Saturday rally

I heard on the news today that some lined up last Saturday.

I keep hearing that this virus is really not transmitted from touching surfaces- but is transmitted from human to human--- so if that is true why is there such concern about the virus on surfaces like boxes or the mail? That said, i do wash down every item of food i bring into the house and wash my hands after handling the mail and packages. I presume the concern is touching a surface and then touching your nose or eyes---

Because it can survive outside the human body for up to 72 hours (perhaps longer, not yet known).

It can land on a surface and survive until you touch it, then survive on your skin until you touch your face. Etc.

Some surfaces host it better (metal, including gas pump handles and credit card machines, hard surfaces in general, but less so on plastic, way less on silicon, even less on something like a head of lettuce - but do go google this, as more research could provide a different list and order).

Cardboard and paper seem not to host it for long (the reasons seem clear in the literature on the actual shape of the virus). But they do host it. So, if a mailman had wiped his nose and then reached into his pouch and then stuck your mail in your box and then you went immediately and got it, you could risk having CV on your hands. This is highly unlikely.

BUT, each of us gets to choose our own level of risk, always. I'm actually being a bit more cautious with mail now that cases in my area are doubling at a rate not yet seen - we've barely gotten started.

Heating things causes the viruses to disintegrate (so cooked food is not really an issue). The cardboard box on the pizza is the issue.

Some studies say 1-2 hours for mail/paper, some say longer. I think weather has something to do with that part (hot better than cold).

At 67 years of age, I've never lived through a virus pandemic.
As an independent restaurant located on Main Street, I have been to hell and back with recessions.
I so want this virus squashed.
I know that we can keep it at bay by social distancing etc.
But, at what cost?
There is no doubt in my mind that as we open countries, including the USA, that people will die.
This virus has been released into our world, communities and our neighborhoods.
I am still furious about this.
I can't help it.
What did any of us do to deserve this deadly pathogen?
I am taking my blood pressure pills.
Good thing, if I want to stay alive.

  • #570
I guess I just don't understand why folks simply cant put a dang mask on. Thankfully they are not folks in full PPE for 12 hrs. with the facial marks/rashes as a reminder.

IF 80% of people wore masks 80% of the time ...
Well ya know.

Apologies in advance. I have dropped back in. Sorry.

Where are we now? The CDC has stated the mortality rate of COVID-19 in the first month of the epidemic was 0.27%. When nursing homes homes were overrun by the virus. Nursing home deaths have accounted for over 50% of the 120,000 deaths in the U.S. from COVID-19. But they are not being overrun now. The current mortality rate of COVID-19 is likely now close to the flu at 0.1%, and we will hear about this soon, IMO. If not, call me out on it.

The chance of 0-24 year old person dying of COVID-19 is lower than than the chance of dying in a car crash in their lifetime. Not 10x lower, not 100x lower, not 1000x lower, 3400x lower based on CDC data and the National Safety Council.

3400x.

46 million people out of work.

What are we doing? I am posting a summary that I made to more receptive audience. I do not mean to be disrespectful to your fears, but I hope to provide prospective. And I believe we have been led down a subservient path that I have never seen in my lifetime.

Before my post, a brief synopsis of a section of George Orwell's Animal Farm, which I believe is prophetic.

George Orwell uses the sheep to display how important it was for those in the position of power to ensure that their message would consolidate their own power. The sheep do not have any individuality. They lack names and simply bleat in unison. They are heard on cue from Squealer. Agreement is not necessary in this setting where adherence is the most important element. In repeating the chant of "Two Legs Good, Four Legs Bad," the sheep operate as reminders of Animalism, the philosophy that put the pigs in power. They bleat as a way to emphasize that the leadership of the pigs is in the best interest of all the farm animals.

Over time, the power of the pigs grows. They eventually learn to walk on two legs, mirroring the humans that used to control the farm before the revolution. Teaching the sheep the new chant of "Four Legs Good, Two Legs Better" is another reminder of how the sheep are used to consolidate the pig power over the farm. Once again, the sheep do not question anything they are taught. Their chanting drowns out any other voices.

If you are reading this, you are not dead of COVID-19. Good for you. However, I have some bad news, you will die someday. What will you die of?

The current death toll of coronavirus in the U.S. is at 119,000, a seemingly big number. In a country of 330 million people, this is 0.036% of the population dead of COVID-19. Average age is around 80.

Forbes published a list of causes of death, and the chance in percentages that you will die of specific events. The media and politician’s agenda repeatedly tells us that we are at perilous risk of dying of COVID-19. "Flattening the curve" to prevent healthcare overrun has been mysteriously transformed into save every life- at any collateral cost. Stay shut down.

We seemed to have gone along with it, bleating- “Four legs good, two legs better.” The media and the political machine behind the media, are abusing information and using their power to control the masses and spread their message. People were initially scared into flattening the curve, but the curve has been flattened and the virus has been shown to be far less deadly than previously stated. Dissenting opinion on the lockdown measures are drowned out by the sheep- and certainly not allowed on television or in print.

In the list attached, I have added in the chance of dying in the U.S. from coronavirus from March until today- outside of being in a nursing home, to the Forbes data. This may roughly represent your chance of dying of COVID-19 going forward through the rest of 2020, until there is a vaccine. Age demographics from Wikipedia, and COVID-19 death data from the CDC.

The data shows that for Americans that are not in nursing homes, there is a-

5x higher chance of drowning or dying in a fire than of COVID-19
45x higher chance of dying of poisoning than of COVID-19
67x higher chance of dying in a car crash than of COVID-19

The chances of your child aged 0-24 dying at some point in their life from a car crash is 3400x higher than them dying of COVID-19.

Should we stop swimming, and drive less? No, because we accept the inherent risks of life.

Should we keep children out of school and close colleges? Of course not, but it appears likely.

At this point we know that vulnerable people need to lockdown, and not businesses, schools, and working Americans. A temporary lockdown was needed in the populated areas of the northeast, but the curve was flattened long ago.

Open up now. Spread the word. Be the shepherd.

"While we have flattened the curve in some places, the fight is far from over. And the way to win is not by declaring a premature victory. Yes, scientists all over the world are working to find a vaccine, but we still have to buy them time to do their job," Gupta wrote.

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed Tuesday, Pence blamed the media for stoking concerns of a "second wave" of the coronavirus in the United States, and insisted that most of the increase in COVID-19 infections in recent weeks has been because of an increase in testing.

"That's not how this works," Gupta wrote. "This may seem counter intuitive, but if you are doing enough testing, cases should start to go down because you are finding people early before they spread it."“

Trump says coronavirus is 'dying out;' Dr. Sanjay Gupta says the virus is not dying - CNN

“President Trump went on a veritable interview tour on Wednesday — Sinclair, Gray TV, the Wall Street Journal, Fox News — and was thoroughly dismissive of the coronavirus threat in at least two of the interviews.
Gray TV's DC bureau chief Jacqueline Policastro said to Trump, "Coronavirus cases are rising in 22 states, including Oklahoma, where you plan to hold a big rally this week. Aren't you worried about people getting sick?"
"No," Trump said, "because if you look, the numbers are very minuscule compared to what it was. It's dying out. By the way, we're doing very well in vaccines and therapeutics." And he went on from there.
His claim about the virus "dying out" is countered by health experts and the government's own data, which shows cases spiking across the country.“

Oklahoma Supreme Court to rule on Trump rally lawsuit

The Oklahoma Supreme Court is expected to rule Friday whether those who attend a campaign rally for President Trump on Saturday in Tulsa must adhere to CDC guidelines for face masks and social distancing.

A court referee heard arguments over the phone Thursday and will make a recommendation to the justices, who are scheduled to discuss the case Friday afternoon. The referee would not disclose his recommendation.

A Tulsa attorney filed a lawsuit this week to stop BOK Center management from hosting the rally "to protect against a substantial, imminent and deadly risk to the community."
