it doesn’t really interest me bc I live in NY, my family all lives in NJ, so I know what it was like here two months ago. My husbands nephew died (not corona related) and he couldn’t be given a proper funeral, just like the rest of the area. Social gatherings were an ongoing issue within the ultra orthodox community, during a time when we all had to social distance, so while I think de blasio should have addressed it differently, I don’t think his frustration was unfounded. Jmo

Eta- two months ago, most of us in NY/NJ were barely leaving our houses. Now things are way different.

I'm sorry about your husband's nephew (your nephew as well).

thank you. I know it sounds weird that I call him my husbands nephew but I didn’t know him all that well and we were pretty close in age so it feels weird to call him my nephew. Addiction is a bish.

Worldometers is showing a pretty horrific day. Will update when it's closer to cut off time.

@10ofRods I don't think that I would compare Covid death rates with Vietnam and Florida. Because I don't think that we are getting the complete data. Countries may not be reporting the deaths.

Remember in February, when the smoke from crematoriums in Wuhan could be seen from space? And they stated less than 3,000 deaths.

According to Worldometers:

1. Brazil - New Cases(40,131) - New Deaths(1,364)

2. U.S. - New Cases(35,193) - New Deaths(874)

3. Mexico - (4,577) - (759)

4. India - (15,612) - (468)

5. UK - (921) - (280)

Across the board reversal from the last few days. We'll have to see if it's an outlier, or an indication we're headed back up in terms of all #'s.

This will sound ridiculous, but it looks like we're in a race with Brazil for the eventual #1 spot in terms of deaths. We're at 123K, and they're at 53K, but moving up fast. Who wants it more?

Was there any truth to the "smoke seen from space" comment? I highly doubt it for two reasons, crematoriums do not emit smoke, and crematoriums can't just burn faster if bodies start piling up. A crematorium has a maximum daily capacity.

ETA, Snopes says the"smoke seen from space" is False: Do Sulfur Emissions from Wuhan, China, Point to Mass Cremation of Coronavirus Victims?

Oy vey. Okay whatever you say. If you actually read any of my posts, I was specifically talking about that one funeral - which was in phase zero, aka during lockdown.
It's not what I have said but is in the AG's letter I have posted. If you have read it. It doesn't matter what phase it was in.

As it happened: England lockdown easing 'not risk free' - BBC News

This was the last daily briefing. There will be ad hoc briefings when anything changes.

Summary
  1. UK PM Boris Johnson announces restaurants, pubs and hairdressers will reopen in England from 4 July
  2. The 2m distancing rule is also being reduced to 1m plus
  3. Cinemas, museums and other attractions will also reopen, but not "close proximity" venues like indoor gyms
  4. The changes are not without risk and could be reversed if necessary but are "reasonable", say top government medical and science advisers
  5. US states including Florida are seeing a "disturbing surge" in cases, says top US adviser Dr Anthony Fauci
  6. Two German districts reintroduce lockdowns after 1,553 workers test positive at a meat processing plant
  7. World tennis number one Novak Djokovic tests positive for Covid-19 after playing in his Adria Tour tournament
  8. Daily UK government briefing will end and now only take place for significant announcements
  9. Worldwide there have been more than 9 million virus cases and 471,000 deaths
More at link.

Further to the AG/De Blasio letter re NYC gatherings during lockdown, this article is also relevant.

WSJ News Exclusive | Attorney General Barr, Berman at Odds Over Letter Criticizing New York City Mayor

Geoffrey Berman, the former top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, refused to sign letter criticizing Mayor de Blasio for enforcing social-distancing rules to block religious gatherings but not protests

Updated June 22, 2020 5:31 pm ET

The day before Attorney General William Barr abruptly announced plans to replace Geoffrey Berman as the Manhattan U.S. Attorney, supervisors in Mr. Barr’s Justice Department asked Mr. Berman to sign a letter criticizing New York Mayor Bill de Blasio for the city’s enforcement of social-distancing rules to block religious gatherings but not recent street protests, people familiar with the matter said.

Yes, read back up the page for our discussion. But thanks for the new article with additional quotes. Much appreciated. The video of the church leaders was just on the news last night and the scientists spoke up today. So it was a fast moving story. I’d love to know if those attending the President’s speech there today were encouraged to wear masks or just rely on ionization.

Sometimes my mind asks if China wasn't trying to destroy our prosperity, with certain stories and videos.
I'm not saying that Covid-19 itself is fake, obviously, it's not.
However, in my own opinion, I'm not convinced that we should have locked up our entire population, instead of quarantining the sick and the infected, not, our entire country.
The economic fallout from all of this is going to be severe.

I saw a video, and it couldn't have been more than 10% of those there that were wearing masks.

I would imagine that a top-down, science-based program to test/quarantine/contact-trace and manage this disaster would require strong leadership and decisive action.
Maybe next time. Imo

We didn’t have enough tests to find the sick, so that was never going to work either.

I just now saw the video too and I agree. It might even have been less than 10% (300) of the 3000 seat church. Hope I’m wrong. JMO

what is RO?

It refers to the number of people, on average, who get CoVid from any one existing person with CoVid.

If every single person who has CoVid gives it to just one person, it's an R 0f 1.0 and CoVid stays the same over time. If people give it to 3.0 that means every single CoVid person is infecting 3 more - CoVid is rising expontentially and will soon overtake a big part of the population.

If the R rate is under 1.0, CoVid (or any virus) gradually decreases.

I can't bring myself to read much about it today, as the rate is up in 22 states and that is just so sad.

I saw Luke Barnett and Brendon Zastrow making this claim on TV last night and figured it was too good to be true. Wanting something to be true doesn’t make it so, but people won’t always wait for science. If the technology hasn’t been proven, is the church being used as a guinea pig? It doesn’t surprise me that the videos making this claim have been removed from church SM accounts.

All that the church is claiming is that there is no CoVid in their building before people come in.

The pastor doesn't understand that people breathe out 100,000 virions per breath, if they are on day 5+ of Covid infection. On average. If they're singing, it's closer to 500,000 virions (conservative, I've seen people say 1M virions). To put that in perspective, a dose of 100,000 virions (standing momentarily next to a breathing person) is not a high viral load.

But standing next to that same person for 10 minutes (they're not talking, just breathing) gives about 1M virions - plenty enough to infect many people. Singing increases it. Shouting increases it too, of course, although singing is a special risk due to the practice of deep inhale and long, sonorous exhale. (Shouting is typically sharper and more abrupt but is still much riskier than just breathing).

Sustained loud yelling is probably worse than singing.
