Mayor Gallego statement on Presidential rally in Phoenix:

PHOENIX- Tomorrow, the President will be hosting a campaign rally at a private church in North Phoenix. The event was not sanctioned or permitted by the City of Phoenix, as the city does not permit political events. Furthermore, it does not abide by current CDC guidelines during COVID-19.

While I do not believe an event of this magnitude can be held safely, particularly as Arizona sees rising COVID cases, the President has decided to continue with this rally.

City officials have contacted both the church and presidential campaign staff to alert them to the city's masking policy. The goal of this policy is not to hand out citations but to educate the public on the virus and its transmission. That is why we have started a robust public outreach campaign focused on education. The city has not changed this enforcement policy for tomorrow's event. The church has indicated that they will be handing out masks to eventgoers and taking temperatures upon check-in.

We've seen tremendous compliance with the mask ordinance that went into effect this weekend. Everyone attending tomorrow's event, particularly any elected official, should set an example to residents by wearing a mask. This includes the President.

Public health is a group effort, not a partisan issue. It requires the participation of every resident and level of government.

It’s probably obvious, but just to clarify her awkward wording about the City not permitting political events. Of course she means that the City doesn’t issue permits for political events, not that the city doesn’t allow political events. I did a double take and read it twice.
:D

So, I am not a conspiracy theorist and so I'm just sitting here flabbergasted. Phoenix is now going exponential in terms of cases. Hopefully, every single attendee will be young enough to survive this (with only 4 on 10,000 people actually dying and 20 in 10,000 with a hospital stay of 2-4 weeks - or more).

I'd urge older people not to go to the rally, to avoid those who did, and stay away from public life as much as possible until the bubble bursts on this next wave. Unless, of course, your desire is to roll the dice and try for immunity that is either temporary or not.

No one will wear masks. Of course, hopefully, a lot of people won't show up. I am really feeling the pain (especially on other forums) of parents who are having to come to turns with their own risk while still living with their adult children.

We haven't heard from our Canadian friend whose son had to come back to roost, for quite a while. I hope @otto is okay.

And in another news, Yosemite had to close campgrounds again due to becoming a hot spot.

Raises hand. :(

Yeah, my colleagues think I am a complete Pollyanna. The water cooler talk (digitally of course) in my neck of the wood is mostly grim.

Spikes everywhere: police departments, airports, airlines, national parks, churches, restaurants, "unknown." Just lots of CoVid.

This is where the rubber hits the road and we find out how it'll behave as it rips through new demographics.

This makes me sad. I love baseball and I want my Cubs to be safe. They won’t be now. Imagine a legend in the making like Javy Baez getting COVID and suffering permanent damage at this point in his career. Some of these athletes are an absolute joy to watch, and it’s a terrible risk to be taking. I’d rather see Javy and the others play many more seasons than to chance any of them having a ruined career.

No mention of whether there will be fans or social distancing, just a concern on where or how the Toronto Blue Jays will play.

Personally, I checked out of baseball when men making $40 million a year playing baseball went on strike.

Speaking of which, one of the world's top tennis players (and anti-vaxxer, apparently) now has CoVid, at the top of his physical game. He is a mask-free advocate as well.

His wife has it too, and I think they're related to a group of 6 who also have it. One of the things people won't like in future is the notification of various people that one has CoVid. Certainly, messages are going out here in California to employers when someone tests positive, even if the rest of the contact tracing falls apart.

Unfortunately, not all employers are ethical.

My first thought was, "hey, if he survives, at least he might not have to worry about not taking the vaccine, since he might then have antibodies." Of course, that verdict is still out.

After long battle, first COVID-19 ICU patient at UMass returns to say thanks

central Massachusetts more at link

WORCESTER – Safwat Basha walked into UMass Memorial Medical Center about three months ago concerned that he might have COVID-19.

The 41-year-old new father, who had no history of serious illness, would not emerge from the building for more than two months. He was put on a ventilator, with a breathing tube inserted in his trachea, as he battled the disease.

Tuesday, Basha walked back into UMass to thank the doctors and nurses who saved him.

“We want to thank all of them,” said Sarwat Basha, the man’s brother.

Safwat Basha is believed to be the first UMass patient admitted to intensive care with COVID-19. His road to recovery was filled with complications, one of his many doctors, Jonathan Holdorf, said Tuesday.

“It was a very long course (of treatment), said Holdorf, a lung and allergy specialist. “He would make a little progress, and then have a bunch of setbacks.”

Holdorf said Basha, like other very sick patients, left the hospital still on a ventilator bound for a rehabilitation facility, where he needed to be weaned off the device.

“Nobody at UMass had heard his voice up until today,” said Holdorf, adding it was heartwarming to get that chance.

ummmm he just recovered and he went back to a hospital to expose himself again?!

he couldn't have sent them a card or waited awhile?

Anybody else beginning to think that even those who believe that the situation is going to get much worse, might be underestimating how much worse?
The world has gone quite mad - bonkers -
I'm going out on a limb now, and predict that Britain's re-opening is not going to go well in the coming weeks. We'll be on something like Thread 65 by then.
Any guess on how many threads this entire discussion will entail at the 'end'?
If there is an actual 'end'?
Think of them as little seedlings.
Seedlings. Spores. Spreading out into the populace.

IMHO this world of ours is beyond a Twilight Zone episode. However, I do try to look at things from a "glass half full" viewpoint. And, slightly off-topic, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. /JK Still sheltering in place with limited food/essentials trips. :)

Thanks to whoever posted the link to Rt rates. Great graphic. Yikes! Over half the country is over 1, meaning fast spread. Two months ago (as recently as April) most states were below Rt1. My state of OR is only 8 back from the top state HI. We are worse than AZ by two spots. We aren’t completely reopened in all counties yet. @mickey2942 MT is number 2! I’m keeping a close eye on this, even though I imagine the densely populated counties to the north in OR account for much of this, rather than my small rural county down south.

From the link:
These are up-to-date values for Rt, a key measure of how fast the virus is growing. It’s the average number of people who become infected by an infectious person. If Rt is above 1.0, the virus will spread quickly. When Rt is below 1.0, the virus will stop spreading. Learn More.
Rt Covid-19

Live: Vaughn Hilliard on MSNBC reporting from Phoenix interviewed many young people lined up to attend the rally. He said their attitude about contracting coronavirus is “denialism.” They think the numbers are exaggerated and their risk is low. :(

Some of these young attendees will soon learn that this virus is the real thing; i hope they don't spread it to their grandparents in the meantime. There is a certain arrogance in young people like this being in denial, because the chances are pretty good they won't get very ill- then they can say, oh, it was no big deal.

No doubt because of travel. And Montana always had very low levels, we are completely open to getting infected. Plus, Montana has a very high percentage of elderly people.

Let's hope we don't have any congregating this Summer. I don't understand why everything fun, like rodeos, fairs, has been canceled, but political events are okay.

@10ofRods I don't think that I would compare Covid death rates with Vietnam and Florida. Because I don't think that we are getting the complete data. Countries may not be reporting the deaths.

I think the reporting is problematic for all poor countries. It's very easy to just become infected, never get tested, never get treatment, die relatively quickly, and not get reported a COVID case. It doesn't have to be a Communist country. IMHO, Brazil's & Mexico's stats are not reliable. In both countries, the medical community has spoken out about reporting problems.

In Florida, neither poverty nor government censorship is a problem; it comes straight from the state health department. First, COVID as cause of death could only be reported by a physician on the certificate, medical examiners could not. Now only ICU beds that actively receive ICU treatment are counted as filled - what exactly that means I don't know. We have approx 7,000 excess mortality over the past 4 months. Mostly people from nursing homes.

Sometimes my mind asks if China wasn't trying to destroy our prosperity, with certain stories and videos.

I thought the same as you. Then I realized it couldn't possibly be true. China is an export economy, dependent on foreigners buying their products. They wouldn't destroy their customers. Plus, despite what they have reported, China has suffered enormously b/c of COVID.

I'm not convinced that we should have locked up our entire population, instead of quarantining the sick and the infected, not, our entire country.

No one knows. I guess the jump on total lockdown comes from China that did not get the Wuhan virus under control until they instituted a complete lockdown, including welding non-compliers into their homes. Also, Italy began locking down the areas with the most cases piecemeal, going from Lombardy, to Northern Italy to all of Italy, for example.

The problem with total lockdown is that it is not sustainable. I think the Chinese / Japanese models make the most sense. Lockdown hot spots - just like they used to lock down areas with polio and encourage mitigation on the Japanese model:

Japanese model -

Avoid
  • Confined spaces
  • Crowds
  • Contact (Wear a Mask, Wash your hands, Watch your distance)
