Great idea.
Even close off roads, so people can congregate, safer, outside BUT with social distancing, I hope.

England goes al fresco to help hospitality sector rebound

England goes al fresco to help hospitality sector rebound

LONDON (Reuters) - Restaurants and pubs in England will be able to serve customers on pavements, terraces and even in car parks under a relaxation of planning laws due to be put before parliament on Thursday, as the government seeks to restart the stalled hospitality sector on July 4.
Britain is slowly reopening after more than three months of lockdown that has pushed some businesses to the brink and forced the government to borrow billions to support its economy.

The government will present legislation aimed at allowing pubs, cafes and restaurants more freedom to operate outside, where experts say the risk of COVID-19 transmission is lower.
The Business and Planning Bill will include changes to allow venues to spread out into pedestrianised areas, terraces and car parks, and temporarily allow them to sell alcohol that can be consumed off the premises, a government source said.

That's a fascinating read. The only thing I want to point out, sterile technique isn't necessarily going to protect one against covid. Seems everybody is now in agreement it's mostly transmitted through the air (respiratory). So what one needs is better respiratory protection. Her husband wore a mask when he presumably caught it, but from the photos looks like they were wearing homemade masks. And it's jut not enough. Also, eyes need to be protected by glasses or goggles.

i use those blue disposable masks which i see on most people including
doctor's offices---i just ordered some cloth masks and i have some KN 95
masks as well

And of course here in the United States, it appears that the effect of COVID-19 was primarily exacerbated by a misguided policy imposed by the Governors of just 6 states--New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusettes and Michigan--that forced nursing homes to take back patients who tested positive for COVID-19 to protect and conserve hospital resources.

At least 50% of the US COVID-19 deaths were individuals in nursing homes.

NY, NJ, CT, PA, MA, and MI account for less than 20% of the US population, but more than 55% of the US COVID-19 deaths.

NY, NJ, CT, PA, MA, and MI combined: 69,198 COVID-19 deaths

All other 44 US states: 54,275 COVID-19 deaths

Those 6 states each have the highest rate of deaths per reported/confirmed cases, ranging from 7.3% up to 9.3%. New Hampshire at 6.2% and Louisiana (which is one of the states that most heavily relies on Medicare/Medicaid) at 6.1% are the only two states have rates above 6%.

NY, NJ, CT, PA, MA, and MI combined: Death rate of 7.7% of reported confirmed cases.

All other 44 US states combined: Death rate of 2.2% of reported confirmed cases.

What a devastating and deadly policy decision by the governors of those 6 states.

I just read that 82% of COVID-19 deaths in Canada were from the elderly in long care homes. (MacLeans, July print edition, now online at MacLeans website) (note: MacLeans is to Canada what the NY Times is to the US)

Wow. So her husband went to the gas station and Home Depot (with mask and Purell!) and had not been out previously - and had red swollen eyes by that same day.

He took precautions and still got it!!

I'm pondering disposable masks. I've been wearing cloth masks. Jmo

WOW is right! I don't normally go to the "beach" anymore, as usually I go to our Marina, but I drive by plenty, even in San Diego they don't get that crazy, except maybe on our celebration of July 4th, Independence Day.
That's just crazy imo. Do they all think this virus has gone away?

Wednesday UK's hottest day of the year so far

Oh wow these photos :(.

I'm thinking that these crowds of people are very likely on furlough or out of work, not able to attend Uni or schools....

I ordered a bunch (of almost certainly fake) KN95 from amazon. I figured even the fake ones are still better than homemade masks, and theses masks are cheap. They are actually easy to wear in the summer. They are probably not actual KN95 (not filtering 95% of particles), but I would think they still give better filtration than homemade masks. To improve filtering of the mask, I plan to wear a silk or chiffon bandana over it. You can also test your mask in multiple ways, and KN95 is supposed to hold water (even the ones not up to 95 % standard). Cotton mask isn't going to hold water.

WHO warns of oxygen shortage as COVID cases set to top 10 million

WHO warns of oxygen shortage as COVID cases set to top 10 million

...
GENEVA (Reuters) - The world faces a shortage of oxygen concentrators as the number of worldwide cases of coronavirus infection nears the 10 million mark, the World Health Organization head said on Wednesday.
"Many countries are now experiencing difficulties obtaining oxygen concentrators," WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference. "Demand is currently outstripping supply."

The new coronavirus has hit 9.3 million people and killed more than 480,000 so far and is rising by about 1 million cases per week. This has pushed oxygen demand to 88,000 large cylinders per day, or 620,000 cubic metres of oxygen, Tedros said.
The sudden rise has created a dearth of oxygen concentrators needed to support breathing of COVID-19 patients suffering from respiratory distress.

The health agency has purchased 14,000 oxygen concentrators from manufacturers and plans to send them to 120 countries in coming weeks, Tedros said. A further 170,000 concentrators - valued at some $100 million - will be potentially available over the next six months.

Listening to this evening’s local news, a group of anti -mask “free choice” attorneys are preparing to sue Palm Beach County to overturn its new executive order to wear masks in indoor public settings. Of course, this is profoundly selfish, putting other people in danger for their “right” not to wear a mask. It will be interesting to see the outcome. All 3 South Florida counties - Miami-Dade, Broward, and now Palm Beach - have mask ordinances now, so this affects the health of millions. South Florida has close to half of Florida’s COVID-19 cases.

They are hyper because we really do not get prolonged heatwaves like this in the UK, especially when so many are off work. Unheard of! I'm not excusing it by the way - they're all idiots... I'd love to take my kids to the beach but everywhere is way too packed so I'll stick to our back garden for now, cheers!

My niece lives in Toronto, arrived 2 days ago and she is now visiting my sister (her mom) and her other sister in Virginia for three weeks. Why can't you see your American family?
Did she fly?
My brother wants to visit so he consulted with his doctor and his doctor’s recommendation was to quarantine 14 days immediately after a flight and before visiting anyone. Plus masks and social distancing while visiting. Hope she has a good visit! I’m just not in a big hurry to fly right now. JMO

No politics please.....but I feel this is Covid related, so I'm gonna post it.

One of the major political parties announced just now, that due to the virus, they will have a primarily Virtual Convention. The candidate will accept the nomination in person, although it's not known what size crowd, if any, will be in attendance. Again, due to the virus situation.

Yes here in Ontario it was a huge contributer to our deaths. Sadly. Most of these homes are not single room or set up for proper quarantine. Many folk cant afford a private room. Many part time working at several etc. was a factor. Toronto is also a contributor. Mass transit, International Airport etc. etc. Yet when I was exposed back in March it was to cases 2,3,4,5 and 6 in my City of 110.000. I knew it would come I just never thought so early in. I respect this virus cuz I know it has no respect for me.

Your Niece is likely aware any Canadian returning has to quarantine 14 days. Too risky to visit. On May 29th my Husband had a heart attack. I hesitate putting it out for all but he us fine. That was hard. Off he went with EMS to our Hospital and then on to an excellent Teaching Hospital for a balloon and a stent. He is fine and doing excellent. My saving grace was our Adult Children work at our Hospital and were able to see him since I could not.Our Nurse Daughter was present when Dr's came in. It's far too risky as he is now in an even higher category. So facetime will have to work. Michigan is not doing so hot right now.

hugs

Thanks sweets. It's all good. On a happy note Grand Baby Bravo to arrive in about 5-6 weeks. All things baby.

I am assuming he wore a homemade mask and no glasses. Red eyes the same days seems a little weird, because incubation period is 2-14 days.

Yes she is an American who went to University in Canada and presently plays for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Maybe that is why she is allowed to travel? Because yes she is a US citizen, although I never see her leaving Canada permanently to be honest.

we're happy to have her (and you when you visit!)
