I just order everything online. Don't have to go to the store, don't have to worry about maskless people (my state doesn't require masks). Amazon makes it too easy to spend all your money.

That’s the problem that the deniers also aren’t foreseeing.

People who refuse to wear masks, socially distance and be civic minded are making sure that local businesses and suppliers lose out while China rakes in the dough.

Because I’ve never shopped online so much in my life. But many of the things I’m buying are from Chinese companies. It’s not my choice. But it’s where a lot of on line stuff comes from. I usually realize after I get it.

That’s the deal with many people now, I’m sure. These people are the ones ruining the economy.

And almost every time I do go out I encounter these stubborn jerks who come too close and/or don’t wear masks or don’t wear them properly.

One woman came into the store, beautifully manicured, hair gorgeously and obviously recently styled. She smiled broadly at a young man who was the only other person not to have a mask. I took it to be a solidarity type thing. But I think that guy just didn’t happen to have one. It wasn’t a political statement or anything. He didn’t smile back.

She then chatted with the checker and laughed heartily. She touched the pin pad with her bare hands then casually touched her face. I was concerned because I was next in line and didn’t want to be near whatever she had exhaled.

I don’t get people like that. It’s a stubborn disdain for others, IMO. And it’s dissuading me from venturing out.

(The earlier I go, however, the better it is. I just have to get there at 7:00 and all the other “crazies” like me are there, fully masked and being careful. But many businesses aren’t open at 7:00!)

I don't think that I will ever go back to a hair stylist.

There were 2 hair stylists in Cincinnati who both had CoVid and saw 140 clients the week before their test results came back. Everyone wore masks, no one got CoVid. Which is pretty amazing - showing that mask wearing really does work.

But I won't be going to a salon any time soon, either.

What scares me is the girl who got it at a bonfire. That really worries me. I’d love to know more about that because I sit outside sometimes with friends.

Was someone coughing? Were they super close? It worries me that people contracted this while outside.
Smoke spreads it more I believe. That is why the smoke canisters and tear gas were frowned upon earlier in the month, so I would think a bonfire would do similar.

You wear a mask, though, right?

We sure do. We also stay 6 feet away from even our granddaughter (who is low risk at age 6) and daughters.

One thing that I worry about is that the per capita rate of infection is climbing pretty quickly in the US, including SoCal. So, each day it is more likely that someone you encounter has CV-19 and that about half of the carriers don't know they have it.

I would be very surprised if the young people at the bonfire were wearing masks.

So they now don’t want to go where there is a rise in cases, they just want to contribute to the rise by having infected people in a state with rising numbers... Oklahoma?

On another note, I’ve got an idea for a new app after doing my two weeks of grocery shopping yesterday. I had been using Shipt since March until this past few weeks. Will return or try this tactic.

Backstory- I live in a republican state with surging numbers. Way too many people here just won’t wear a mask. Wouldn’t even give me my 6’ of space at checkout yesterday without me “asking” for it.

My idea- create a recording of sniffling and coughing and play on a continual loop on phone while shopping to “create” social distance. What do you think? Call it the spacemaker cough generator?

It reminds me of an episode where Louie De Palma in Taxi coughs loudly and vigorously in a theater in order to get people to move away from him and not sit close by. I laughed so hard.

Not outside when socializing. We sit about 10-12 feet apart. But I’m drinking wine or beer, so hard to do with a mask.

Tear gas and smoke canisters make people cough and their noses run. I think that was the issue.

Yep. 61 patients in the hospital. With 1.5 million people in this county it's not surprising that I don't know any of these people.

If there are 61 in the hospital, it's likely that there are 1200 active CoVid carriers outside the hospital, of whom half are asymptomatic or have slight symptoms (easily confused with allergies). Some researchers would put the number way higher than that, but it would depend very much on the county.
Well they cannot.
Unfortunately this nasty killer virus from China (bar me from saying the truth that has been documented over and over, and I will willingly leave this discussion).
The USA and it's citizens must open.
There is no other choice!
People will die.
That's a fact.
What is also a fact, is that this world. The entire world has been invaded by a teeny tiny deadly killer.
It's here, and ALL of us need to fight it.
We know what to do.
There are many people in the USA who think this a political maneuver.
So, more will die, or get sick as they deny this is a terrible virus that can take you out.
How do you fix stupid?
As in people who ignore that we have a pandemic?
I can only try to manage my tiny piece of this world. And this is not easy.
I realize that people nowadays are uncomfortable with anger.
Well, unless it's a mob. Apparently then it's okay.
I will NEVER be okay with a bunch of thugs destroying my business and family livelihood.
Maybe without anger, we have acceptance.
I'm angry and I refuse any punks wanting to destroy my business.

Great post. San Diego must be pretty chill, because I see a lot of instant anger in California (and all over the US). Especially from the non-mask wearers who are asked to wear masks.

You can't fix stupid. And apparently educating people doesn't work all that well (although my students say that watching the below video really opened their eyes to the problem - which they said they were not taking seriously).

I still doubt that all of them will modify their behavior (although frankly, online classes are filling up fast for Fall, for obvious reasons).

...and now the video is gone, which means I have to go take it down in the class...sigh. All versions are now not public...

Because, along with the incessant tallying of new cases, some of the same folks are calling for things to shut back down. And the people that advocate shut downs tend to want to shut down things that they don't use. All of this would be way quieter if homebodies had skin in the game. But that's the nature of things - some don't care if they shut down my bar or casino, and I don't care if they shut down their church or access to elective surgery. The difference is that I'm not advocating for the latter.

Perhaps folks from FL and TX can chime in, but I haven't tripped over any bodies in the streets in AZ. I don't hear ambulances. I know people that are locked down and extremely vocal online about Covid, but that has way more to due with November than the actual virus.

It’s odd to me that not hearing ambulances or tripping over bodies is evidence to anyone that there’s not much to worry about.

You know there’s trouble when a governor who had been flouting all CDC recommendations regarding masks, shut downs, tracing, etc., is now begging people - ALL people - to stay home.

An emergency alert went out on people’s phones in San Antonio as hospitals near capacity. And yet, no bodies on the ground and no ambulances filling the air.
'STAY HOME': San Antonio distributes emergency alert to phones amid record-high case count

In AZ?:

PHOENIX — The same day Banner Health announced it was deploying more than 200 additional nurses to combat a statewide spike in coronavirus cases, Gov. Doug Ducey said Arizona’s hospitals were on the verge of reaching surge capacity.

“Our cases are increasing,” Ducey said during a press conference on Thursday.

“Our hospitals are seeing additional stress and they are likely to hit surge capacity very soon.”

Earlier on Thursday, Banner Health said it had brought in the additional nurses via contractor as part of its strategy to avoid exceeding surge capacity at its hospitals, according to a press release.

To ease the stress and patient influx at Arizona hospitals, Ducey urged Arizonans on Thursday to utilize more caution and stay home whenever possible.
Arizona reports 3,858 new coronavirus cases, 9 more deaths

This is not a movie. But it’s still dangerous.

I agree with this. People complain about wearing both for sure. However, if people choose not to protect themselves by not wearing condoms, they can’t simply come to Home Depot and sneeze on me/you/us and give us something they caught by not taking precautions in the bedroom like they can give us covid. :/
To me - condoms and face masks are protective coverings that, if worn properly and used consistently, can reduce the risk of transmission of disease. With condoms, it has never been as simple as just telling people to use them, and it won’t be with masks either.
MOO

I think you're good at 10-12 feet. It's so unlikely to get it in that situation.

However, I'd want to be upwind from my friends. :D

Life has gotten so strange.

What's really sad is that it didn't have to be this way. It really didn't. Who would have ever thought the US would be dead last in pandemic response? It's embarrassing and sad.

I sure didn’t. I was stupid. Early on here when others were sounding the alarm I was citing our response to Ebola and how well that was handled. I felt confident.

That’s what I do! I sit with my back to the wind.

I think the state of Nevada will care because of the revenue alone. They have only recently reopened.

Right. I mean the economy there is based on the casinos and tourism. This is devastating for Nevada.

From what I heard the hospitals here postponed elective surgeries to make room for covid patients that never arrived. Hospitals were/are empty losing millions of dollars in revenues.

Sutter Health suffered a $168M operating loss last month as COVID-19 upended finances

Elective surgeries weren’t postponed to make room for COVID patients. They were postponed because going to the hospital is a great way to contract this virus.

Ebola is not airborne. Also, people become infectious only after they started showing symptoms. So it was much easier to control.

Or maybe they just weren't super spreaders. Apparently some people are super spreaders and some are not. So you can have someone that infects hundreds and someone who maybe infects one or two (or even nobody).

Agree. This virus is a beast of it's own.

Have they had a resurgence like South Korea or are they still OK?
They are still OK. 1 or 2 new cases a day (population 95 million), no deaths. That really is astounding considering they share a 1,400 km border with China.

Vietnam's pandemic response is fascinating reading.
