New York Public Library Lions Don Face Masks As City Reopens

The iconic lion statues that stand guard outside the New York Public Library’s 42nd Street branch have been outfitted with face masks.

“Patience and Fortitude are the perfect symbols for the strengths our city and our nation need now even more. Like them, New Yorkers are strong and resilient and can weather any storm. We will get to the other side of this public health crisis together,” library President Anthony W. Marx said in a statement.

“But to do so, we must remain vigilant, we must have patience and fortitude, and we must follow what experts tell us, especially as we continue to reopen our cities. The lions, protectors of knowledge and truth who have seen 109 years worth of history, are setting that example.”

Love it! I always have to visit Patience and Fortitude on my rare trips to NYC. :)

Would it be stupid of me to say that I wish I’d get the virus just to get it over with? Since so many people say most people will get it eventually anyway? I am high risk anyway due to age and I have a lung condition.

Sorry @BeckyF IMO it would be really, really stupid. They don’t know yet how long the antibodies last. Tests for antibodies aren’t necessarily accurate per 60 Minutes on Sunday. I’m 74 with mild asthma, controlled BP and a BMI over 30. There is no way I want to suffer through Covid-19, and I don’t want to go on a ventilator, only to survive impaired. Dying of it doesn’t bother me nearly as much as suffering beforehand. Nope, nope, nope.

Take care. Take all possible precautions. And hang in there. I hear you about people without masks. Grrrrrrrr.

Yes. Known. Many are Americans coming home for treatment. Others have dual citizenship of America and Mexico.
Personally, I would chose to receive treatment in the USA, versus Mexico.
So, yes, that is happening.

Deaths reported on Tuesday are ALWAYS significantly higher than deaths reported on Mondays because of this thing they call the weekend during which there are fewer people responsible for preparing and processing the reports working.

Deaths reported today are down 18% from last Tuesday, and down 40% from four weeks ago. That's the RIGHT direction!

Last week, there were 1,282 deaths reported Sunday through Tuesday. This week, only 1,180. That's the RIGHT direction!

Last week, there were 3,775 deaths reported, down from 4,187 the week before, and the fewest since the week ending March 28. That's the RIGHT direction!

You're on the right track. Our highest weekly deaths in UK were 7,905 on the 1st May two months ago and we are down to below 900 now. It takes that long.

I am keeping records and put these figures together for the UK and posted them on the last thread.

Weekly UK deaths and increase % on total deaths from previous week. 1st May had the highest number of weekly deaths at a daily average of 1,128.
Date deaths % inc per week
1 May 7900 40
8 May 3739 14
15May 2857 9
22May 2395 7
29May 1768 5
5 Jun 2100 5.5
12Jun 1520 3.7
19Jun 974 2.3
26Jun 953 2.2

Here's a really good source of graphs from NBC

Graphic: Coronavirus deaths in the U.S., per day

The highest week for US was also around May 2nd and was over 11,000 deaths so that is at least a 60% decrease in your weekly deaths so far if you are down below 4,000 a week and it is more accurate than monitoring upticks in cases IMO.

(Reuters) - New U.S. COVID-19 cases rose by more than 47,000 on Tuesday according to a Reuters tally, the biggest one-day spike since the start of the pandemic, as the government's top infectious disease expert warned that number could soon double.

Gov Abbott ordered bars closed (again) and for restaurants to limit capacity. That tells you what you need to know.

"Abbott on Tuesday gave local governments the choice to place restrictions on outdoor gatherings of over 100 people after previously setting the threshold at over 500 people. Now outdoor gatherings of over 100 people are prohibited unless local officials explicitly approve of them."

If they were allowing outdoor gatherings of 500 people, then it wasn't just bars that were the source of the spread. And why on earth would they continue to open the door for large outdoor gatherings by leaving the decision up to local officials? Given that people are resistant to contact tracing, there should be no gatherings whatsoever. When they get contact tracing working well, then consider outdoor gatherings of 10.

It looks like there is no one taking leadership and responsibility to get CoVid under control. Key decisions are left to trickle down the ranks to decision makers who don't have much hope of acting effectively.

Gov. Greg Abbott orders Texas bars to close again and restaurants to reduce to 50% occupancy as coronavirus spreads

Interesting snippets in there. E.g. The analysis of foreign influence in the US pharmaceutical chain. The fact that US cannot have bought up all the Remdesivir if some is going to South Korea. Also, why is China banning Dutch pork because of an outbreak in a factory, if it cannot be transmitted via the meat? That is a bit worrying. Do they know something we don't?

From your link.

U.S. senators called for a government analysis of foreign influence in the U.S. pharmaceutical supply chain.

ASIA-PACIFIC

* South Korea has started distributing stocks of the COVID-19 treatment remdesivir which have been donated by Gilead Sciences Inc and plans to begin talks to purchase more supplies in August, its disease control agency said.

* Authorities will lock down around 300,000 people in suburbs north of Melbourne for a month from late on Wednesday.

EUROPE

* The European Union has excluded the United States from its initial "safe list" of countries from which the bloc will allow non-essential travel from Wednesday.

* China has halted almost all imports of pork from the Netherlands, apparently motivated by COVID-19 outbreaks at some of the largest Dutch slaughterhouses.

Not for me it doesn't. Nowhere near enough.

So, yes, that is happening.

This could be fuelling the higher cases in California, Arizona and Texas, in addition to the protests and gatherings.

So no testing or screening at the border presumably for the returning citizens.

To understand the danger of COVID-19 outbreaks in meatpacking plants, look at the industry's history

Think of hundreds or thousands of workers that all need to clock in or swipe a badge for their shift.
They have to swipe a badge, get a temp check (or go thru thermal scanning) and go thru turnstiles to get to their work area/station.

Going in - usually one entrance for employees, lined up, touching the person in front of them. You can’t social distance and get everyone in the building unless you start an hour before each shift and space people apart.

People huddled in the smoking area just outside the door access with masks off to smoke, talking while smoking, break rooms or communal eating areas. Pulling down masks to talk over the noise.

A lot of retrofits needed in these older plants and not sure if all were successful due to the age/setup of the plant.

Can You Catch COVID-19 Through Your Eyes?

Some research has begun pointing in that direction, according to Elia Duh, MD, a researcher and professor of ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore.

The clear tissue that covers the white of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid, known as the conjunctiva, “can be infected by other viruses, such as adenoviruses associated with the common cold and the herpes simplex virus,” he says.

There’s the same chance of infection with SARS-CoV-2, says Duh. “If there are droplets that an infected individual is producing by coughing or sneezing or even speaking, then the front of the eyes are directly exposed, just like the nasal passages are exposed. In addition, people rub and touch their eyes a lot. So there’s certainly already the vulnerability.”

Can You Catch COVID-19 Through Your Eyes?

I would think if you can get it through your eyes, many more people would be contracting the virus. A mask obviously doesn't cover your eyes and no public health officials are telling people to wear shields. There is just so much we don't know ---
