I agree about the curfews. I only learnt yesterday that Montgomery, Al has had a curfew in place for 3 months. How many other US cities have had that? No UK towns or cities have had curfews. But enforcing the curfew comes down to the police and if they cannot do that they just have to stand by and watch the curfew being broken. So if local police say they cannot enforce a curfew, (they would be consulted) then there probably wouldn't be a curfew. MOO.

New Jersey and New York had a curfew in March, April and May, only essential personnel were allowed out between 8:00pm-5:00am. Essential Stores also closed at 8:00pm.

More Americans have died from coronavirus than in wars in Vietnam, Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan

More than 58,000 Americans died in Vietnam. The US coronavirus death rate is 2.2 times higher.

Almost 37,000 Americans died in Korea. The US coronavirus death rate is more than 3.4 times higher.

4,431 Americans died in Iraq. The US coronavirus death rate is more than 28 times higher.

2,445 Americans died in Afghanistan. The US coronavirus death rate is more than 51 times higher.

More Americans also have died of coronavirus in less than five months than in all of World War I. That conflict took the lives of 116,516 American soldiers.

Very sobering statistics

‘Feeling Like Death’: Inside a Houston Hospital Bracing for a Virus Peak

“Ms. Rios had not been out partying. She said she thought she had contracted the coronavirus while working as a clerk in a dialysis unit for children. She said that she has allergies that make it difficult to wear a mask, and that she would sometimes take her mask off in the unit, where one child later tested positive for the virus. “I couldn’t tell you if every time I talked to her I had a mask on,” she said.

In another room nearby was Curtis Ezell, 37. He had come to the hospital to be treated for heart failure, but tested positive for the virus when he had a routine test upon admission. He sometimes does deliveries for DoorDash, a food delivery service, and recently moved to Houston, staying at hotels.”

India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, has warned citizens against “negligence” in following coronavirus guidelines.

Several Indian cities are preparing to extend their lockdown to combat the spread of the virus, as daily new cases in the country remain close to 20,000.

Federal health data released today showed India had reported 18,522 new cases in the previous 24 hours, down slightly from Sunday’s record of 19,906.

In total, the country has 550,000 recorded infections – the fourth largest number in the world.

Bravo to the Miami Beach and Miami-Dade mayors, they both are trying so hard to contain the virus in that area and have ZERO help from government --- but they should have shut down spring break in March and they didn't.

Coronavirus pandemic: The latest updates from around the world

Miami Beach, Florida, Mayor Dan Gelber said the city is implementing a face mask mandate today, in part because there “hasn't been a unity of purpose in the community.” There will be penalties for the Miami Beach, Florida, residents who don’t wear masks.

The mayor said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis should make mask-wearing mandatory, and it’s been a “problem” to get people to wear them.

“There are people who think it's a political statement to wear a mask, and it's like an insult to the family and they're fighting us about it, and I can't imagine why that has become something right now, other than that, you know, the President has made it something,” Gelber said.

Today, coronavirus task force member Dr. Anthony Fauci, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield and other top government health officials will testify before a Senate Committee on the latest efforts by the US government to contain the pandemic.

The Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions panel hearing comes as several states are struggling to contain the virus as cases counts continue to rise across the nation and states begin to reopen. The US reported more than 40,000 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, its biggest daily jump yet.

Coronavirus pandemic: The latest updates from around the world

Fauci and Redfield testified before lawmakers last week, when Fauci said "we're going to be doing more testing, not less," in response to President Donald Trump's recent claim that he asked his administration to slow down testing during the pandemic.

Senators have been weighing another stimulus package in recent weeks as unemployment numbers remain worrisome and economic hardship stemming from the pandemic persists. Republicans remains divided on the size and scale of the next stimulus bill and while it has been discussed for months, the next phase of economic relief is still weeks away. But there is now broad agreement something has to be done -- something that wasn't always the case.

Ok. So any other states? Did the whole of Alabama have curfew for 3 months?

What is G4 flu virus with ‘pandemic potential’ found by Chinese researchers?

In a new research, scientists from China – which has the largest population of pigs in the world – have identified a “recently emerged” strain of influenza virus that is infecting Chinese pigs and that has the potential of triggering a pandemic. Named G4, the swine flu strain has genes similar to those in the virus that caused the 2009 flu pandemic.

The study was published Monday in the US science journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PANS).

They also found that the G4 strain has the capability of binding to human-type receptors (like, the SARS-CoV-2 virus binds to ACE2 receptors in humans), was able to copy itself in human airway epithelial cells, and it showed effective infectivity and aerosol transmission in ferrets.

Black Americans are more than twice as likely as Whites to die from coronavirus

At least 26,747 Black Americans have died from coronavirus. The virus has killed roughly 1 in 1,500 Black Americans, according to the nonpartisan American Public Media Research Lab.

Black Americans are dying of Covid-19 at a disproportionately high rate: They represent over 12% of the US population but account for nearly a quarter of all US Covid-19 deaths, the research lab reported.

Black Americans' coronavirus death rate is 2.3 times higher than that of White & Asian Americans and twice as high as the death rate for Latinos.

By comparison, White Americans represent over 62% of the US population but account for just about half of all coronavirus deaths. One in 3,600 White Americans has died, the lab reported.
This has also happened in the UK and has been partly explained by the higher percentage of BAME employed by the health service and the higher percentage living in London and other high population density areas.
MOO.

Here's a link also.

Why are more BAME people dying from coronavirus?

Congrats New Zealand!

No new cases recorded in New Zealand

New Zealanders have been delivered the sweet words from health officials that for more than a week they had been yearning to hear again: on Tuesday, there were no new cases of Covid-19 reported in the country.

New Zealand has effectively eliminated the coronavirus after a strict national lockdown in March and April, with no known community transmission.

I can't remember. Was LE allowed to enforce the curfew?

SC posted 1,324 new cases yesterday. Nearly half of our 34,644 cases have occurred in the last 14 days! Over 1,000 people are currently hospitalized.

I imagine our bars and restaurants will be closed again in the near future. Beaches, too.

SW Virginia is seeing a rise in cases from Myrtle Beach. My small town has 35 and Roanoke had 70 as of last Friday. The local MB numbers don't reflect an outbreak....odd????

Also seeing increases from the NC beaches, as well.

New York governor calls on Trump to issue national face coverings order

Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York called on Donald Trump to “put a mask on it” and sign an executive order requiring people to wear face coverings in public. Cuomo told the president, who has consistently refused to wear a mask in public, to “lead by example” and wear one himself to stop the surge in new coronavirus cases.

“We did it two months ago in this state,” said Cuomo, adding that other states that initially resisted mask mandates were now requiring them, despite some backlash.

“Let the president have the same sense to do that as an executive order and then let the president lead by example and let the president put a mask on it, because we know it works.”

Florida had a stay home order - as soon as it lifted it seems like our numbers went up until they are out of control now IMO - and still no statewide mask requirement - the two counties around me finally both have mask requirements.

PM pledges 'new deal' to build post-coronavirus

Boris Johnson is unveiling government plans to soften the economic impact of coronavirus with a promise to "build build build".

Speaking in the West Midlands, the prime minister will say he wants to use the coronavirus crisis "to tackle this country's great unresolved challenges".

As part of a "new deal", Mr Johnson is setting out plans to accelerate £5bn on infrastructure projects.

Labour has called for a "laser-like focus" on preventing job losses.

The prime minister's speech comes as BBC analysis found that the UK was the hardest hit of all the G7 major industrialised nations by the virus in the weeks leading up to early June.

In April, the UK economy shrunk by a record 20.4% as a result of the spread of coronavirus and the subsequent lockdown measures.

Aiming to emulate the New Deal policies of the depression-era American President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Mr Johnson will say he wants a government that "puts its arms around people at a time of crisis".

In the aftermath of the Wall Street Crash of 1929, President Roosevelt launched one of the largest, most expensive US government programmes which included building schools, hospitals and dams.

In a bid to boost the country's financial outlook, Mr Johnson is pledging to put jobs and infrastructure at the centre of the government's economic growth with a commitment to "build, build, build".

Mr Johnson will say he wants to use the coronavirus crisis as an opportunity to "to build the homes, to fix the NHS, to tackle the skills crisis, to mend the indefensible gap in opportunity and productivity and connectivity between the regions of the UK".
