Fauci says new US coronavirus cases could hit 100,000 a day in stark warning to Senate – live

Fauci: 'We are going in the wrong direction ... it could get really bad'
America’s leading public health expert Anthony Fauci has confirmed what the record figures are telling us – the US is sliding backwards on its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are going in the wrong direction,” Fauci just told the Senate.

Last week the US saw a new daily record of 40,000 new coronavirus cases in one day.

Fauci just said, in testimony before committee, that he fears that the rate will rise dramatically.

“I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around.”

This is such a great Guardian today...... So much more news in there than just the Fauci remarks.

For example:
The US has bought up virtually all the stocks for the next three months of one of the two drugs proven to work against Covid-19, leaving none for the UK, Europe or most of the rest of the world.

Experts and access to medicines campaigners are alarmed both by the US unilateral action on remdesivir and the wider implications, for instance in the event of a vaccine becoming available. The Trump administration has already shown it is prepared to outbid and outmanoeuvre all other countries to secure the medical supplies it needs for the US.

“They’ve got access to most of the drug supply [of remdesivir] so there’s nothing for Europe,” said Dr Andrew Hill, senior visiting research fellow at Liverpool University.

I know there are folks who will boast about this action. I find it totally and absolutely disgusting.

Ya know... there is going to be more times in the future than less where the USA is going to have to work with the rest of the world...

NO science-based leadership at all, but we are still going to steal all the cookies.

BBM / RSBM:

Uh, no. Absolutely not true.

Yes some people obviously f if he off the virus better than others.

It’s called viral load...there’s a lot more to this. The amount of exposure clearly plays a role.

There is much reference on this; @10ofRods may have time to summarize.
My personal theory on it, when you get a small viral dose, your immune system is able to gear up and fight it off before it replicates to a high number. Obviously the dose one gets initially plays a role, which is why, I believe, we have seen young and healthy nurses and doctors to get severely sick and die.

California records more than 6,300 new coronavirus cases in a day

The total number of new cases in California is now at least 222,917 and nearly 6,000 people have died from the virus in the state. People between the ages of 18 and 49 represent a majority of the cases.

Hospitalizations and intensive care rates are also at an all-time high in California.

With more than 4.1 million tests having been performed, the state’s positivity rate stands at 5.6%.

Absolutely - see my eta re: health workers.

Daughter who lives in Florida just called. Remember that vacation to the Florida Keys last week?

Well, turns out 2 people in her party tested positive today for Covid that was traced to a party the week before THAT. She said they were also with another family and all of them dined and drank at restaurants and bars, went scuba diving, snorkeling and boating all week.

She then went on to tell me how contagious it is, they are now worried, warning me to stay in, blah, blah blah. In the meantime I'm rolling my eyes on the phone, saying, Yes, I told you this. Yes, I warned you of that.

Good luck Florida.

My daughter has been in NYC through all of this. She and her boyfriend are moving down with me in FL for about 4 months (both lucky to have fully remote positions). So I have been very serious with her about the two of them living out the two-week quarrantine upon arrival. NOW as it gets closer for them to come down, they will be staying with boyfriend's folks in NJ for a bit and then driving down...

Now ... She's asking ME where if I am going to leave the house to self-quarantine from them! Ha!

But quite honestly.. I am planning on following all testing locations so we can all get tested around that time....

I ended up canceling my dental cleaning/checkup. I'm a little  to admit it, but I got cold feet and just didn't think it was the right thing to do. I tossed and turned all night long worrying about the strict procedures for entering the office. The routine appointment wasn't urgent, and DH is overdue for his cleaning due to COVID-19, so we will both schedule our visits in a week or two unless cases in Michigan surge.

Sorry I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at this considering you’ve been here since day 1 LOL

I paused my gym membership - and haven't made a cleaning appointment despite being hounded....I'm sticking with home, work, grocery, that's about it for me.

Aren’t ICU units set up like a spoke?
Or a self contained “pod”?
Central command post in the middle?

How would you convert a regular floor with rooms off a hallway unless they had a Decon room attached? And enough staff trained to handle the Covid ICU cases?
What about non-Covid ICU patients?

Our ICU's are very pod like...command post in the middle and rooms surrounding it. In each of the ICU's there are several negative pressure rooms. Those are and were used pre covid for any patient with an infectious disease. Precovid patients with contagious illnesses, like flu were and are housed in the negative pressure rooms in the general ICU.
We also had a unit that was brand new and previously unused, specifically designed for isolation units. That was opened for the first time with Covid.

I hope this helps and I am sorry I am not better at painting the picture, @MimosaMornings

Anyone else work in a larger medical center? I work in a university hospital and would love to hear your experiences.

Well done. For me, a lot of this is also about my own “peace of mind”. For me, the anxiety before and afterwards is too much. For example, I HAD to get workers in my house finally after putting it off for four months and I was up tossing and turning—I’m short on time but will say the measures and lengths I went to before they came in, and afterwards, are nothing short of crazy, but it gave me the peace of mind I needed. That last uber ride I took 4 months ago had me sweatin for two weeks.

For me it all comes down to is it worth the risk. Jmo.

they don't listen until it hits close to home IMO. I'm awaiting the first positive from the circle of friends who attended a wine driveway party right before memorial day weekend - no masks, no social distancing - 16 of them - I declined.
I hope she doesn't have it but you know I'm right around the corner should something happen and you can't travel here

I'm so glad. I read your plan and I got so anxious, from afar. I know we are supposed to keep our teeth clean (so I'm brushing way more frequently and have one of those sonic care thingies - the hygienist said my teeth were really good last time, so I cling to that).

Since cases are going up so quickly in California and in my county, I am probably going to try for a vaccine or at least the heparin spray if I can ever get myself to a teleconference with a doctor.

I too keep awaiting the first case in my broader circle of family and friends. One group already has 6 people living in one household with 2 others that visit frequently. Of those, one is a 12 year old involved in group sports (outdoors), 6 are between 20 and 30. Two work at a socially distanced gym. One just went back to work at a restaurant. So. With cases rising through community spread in the towns where they live and work, it may just be a matter of time.

We have more than 1000 active cases in our part of the world, and it's set to double in 14-15 days. Just my zipcode had 30 new cases in the past 5 days, up from 5 in a week one month ago. We can see where it's going.

If someone builds it, they will come. Yep. No matter how difficult a race course, how dangerous a venue there will be those who will attempt and/or enter.

Right now in my own family, my 89 year old father, who doesn't mask up..oh and he is in Costco today (but of course he has to wear a mask in there) went over to my sister's house yesterday to borrow her rescue inhaler because he has "been short of breath" for the last few days and has a rash on his arm...will he use the pulse ox my sister also gave him..why no!! Even though I was begging him last night to please take his pulse ox.
It is almost like he wants to get this virus. We siblings have been emailing his cancer dr since he goes in tomorrow for a checkup. (he is cancer free)
I have given up on him to be honest. It is my mother and my handicapped sister that lives with them (she is a diabetic and over age 60) that I worry more about...since dad rules the roost and what he says goes...I hate this. Its so hard to get through to him.

Thank you. She has since moved to Fort Lauderdale. And to think my husband and I thought (for a split second) of driving down to Orlando in May to help her move! Good thing Florida put a ban at that time for NJ, otherwise, we might have gone

I suspended my gym membership when I was experiencing low sodium level and then for PT for bursitis. Not sure when or if I'll return, but DH would like to get back to swimming. Gyms in Michigan were slated to reopen on June 25, but the Governor extended the closures indefinitely. I think gyms will probably be allowed to reopen when we have successfully reached Phase 5. Some gyms have reopened despite the Governor's warning, but it's up to local officials to enforce.

I sure hope they can obey your home quarantine rules for at least 10 days - 14 days would be better after travel down the East Coast. I definitely would get everyone tested at the beginning of their stay - and then if possible, another week later, as any infection would likely not show up for the first 3 days (although could become transmissible during that time).

The goal would be to find out early if anyone has it, and then of course, stick the positive people in strict quarantine within the house - everyone wearing masks and some kind of eye wear when interacting from 6-8 feet apart.

Crazy times. Hopefully the two young people will have plenty of work to do once they settle in and the time will go quickly enough.

I took my dogs to the vet to get heartworm tests and updated vaccinations this morning. I panicked when I got there and realized I didn't have a face covering. However, I transferred the dogs to the staff member outside and she was masked. I really don't worry TOO much when I am outside in our Colorado sunshine.

I couldn't believe I forgot the heartworm preventative until now. I usually start in what passes for spring here. Even though it's not endemic here in Colorado yet, between global climate change and living a short block from a wetlands area, I'd rather safe than sorry.

I am trying to get everything done that can be done now in case things start ramping up again in Colorado. Our R0 is 1 today according to Rt COVID-19.
